No, I had no idea. I hope everythings well. As you can tell by some of my stupid answers, you have been greatly missed on this thread.

Let us know if there's anything we can do...

Hi, I am in the process of

Hi, I am in the process of replacing the STK392560 IC's on model KP-51WS510 and noticed the original solder has bridges going from some of the pads to the components surrounding them. I was wondering if when I re solder I must make the same bridges, this seems like it would be difficult and since its very hard to see which pads have the bridge due to black paint on the connections I donÂ’t want to try it unless necessary. Please advise, Thanks.

I have the KP-51WS510 and had the same issue with IC's, took it to an authorized sony maintenance shop and had them fix both ($500). The problem is, it's been 6 months and the problem is back. The shop tells me they only warranty 90 days. Does sony have a warranty on their chips? Or am i going ot be out another $500??

Please help!

Cheers

Thank You Larry!  I have a question.  If I replace the whole D board, would that take care of the convergence problem?  Are these convergence ICs and fuses found on the d board?  I don't have any experience with soldering.  Sony parts has a replacement d board for around $185.00 ....

Really? We've all been doing these repairs because you can't buy a new "A-1302-180-A" D Board.

Can anyone tell me if the solder bridges that go from the IC pins/pads to the surrounding components have to be there when I re solder?

A quick follow-up to my

A quick follow-up to my previous posts of two weeks ago:

It turns out that the surface mount resistor on the GV circuit was not bad, HOWEVER, its associated SMT capacitor was shorted via a solder bridge! This means that the repair shop tech with 45 years of soldering experience created 2 shorts on circuits away from the ICs that he was replacing. Whether he was careless or dishonest (I lean toward the latter) he caused me to waste a lot of time and a little extra money. It did give me an opportunity to learn more about tracing circuits than I otherwise would have. I found an honest professional to clean up the capacitor (for free) and my picture is now fine and doesn't appear to require any adjusting.

For anyone considering using a shop to do their solder work, as I did... Make sure that they have a helpful attitude and are completely agreeable to doing component work on the circuit board. If they express doubt or a bad attitude, especially if they insist you'd be better off paying for a complete TV service, take your business elsewhere. This advice assumes that you are reasonably confident that the ICs and related failed components are your only problem.

I remain grateful to this thread for saving me several hundred dollars!

Thanks mathelm. I was just

Thanks mathelm. I was just curious about those bridges because this is my first go at this kind of repair and I always try to put things back just as I found them. Looking at the same pins on both ICÂ’s (before I began to remove the solder) I found some of the bridges did not quite make the connection to the side components and some did. I really donÂ’t know if this is true or not but first thought is that the trace runs through the board and the solder had flowed above the trace going to where the trace goes only on top of the board. I finished the repair a few days ago with success, and I did not purposely make any of the bridges, a few did reconnect but most did not. So thanks again for mentioning that you donÂ’t think the bridges need to be put back, even though the convergence is fixed I knew I didnÂ’t put things back just as I found them so still had a little concern about it.

Larry Dillan and mathelm, thanks for giving your time and experience to this thread. I knew I had a convergence problem but would not have had any clue as to how to fix it. I have no experience at all with electronic repair, but I was able to find all the info I needed to do the repair. I also found other threads on the forum written by Larry and they helped as well. I spent a LOT of time reading about the repair and some time practicing solder removal/soldering, the repair itself went smooth and my TV is back to normal. Again, Thanks!!

I found the exact same firm foam type of deposit on the same cap as you have in this photo.  Did not seem to be bad cap.  What did you find out?

Larry Dillon
that is not a bad capaitor,

that is not a bad capaitor, leaking, taht is white silicon that the factory usses on larger components so they do not vibrate loose duringing shipping.

Larry, I seek your advice. I, along with others, have come to realize that you knowledge is vast. I have a Mitsubishi vs-50803 with a convergence issue. I replaced the ICs and all was perfect. However, I slipped into the other room to grab the xbox and upon return the problem had also returned. I have resoldered and no improvement came of it. I need advice, do I replace the ICs again or is there more to the issue that I don't know? Thanks for all your help, previous and present. This is my e-mail if you need it. [email protected]

Just finished installing the two new chips and was dismayed to find that the problem is not fixed. Before I adjust convergence, is there anything else that I should do first? I could not find any bad fuses on the D board. Could fuses on other boards be bad or perhaps I overlooked a fuse on the D board. Any suggestions?

There are two picofuses on the 'G' board that could be bad.  PS5001 and PS5002 on the +22v and -22v lines supply power to the convergence chips on the 'D' board.  I had to replace one of those fuses when my chips failed.

Mdonnelly, thank you.

Mdonnelly, thank you.
Have others had to make minor adjustments to their display after installing the chips or were your pictures not in need of any adjustments?

I had to make minor

I had to make minor adjustments after the new IC's were installed.  Just the manual convergence adjustment after the flash focus didnt do it.

Larry Dillon said: No you should brush it out carefully with A small brush and a vacuum cleaner.  If you purchaced good ICs and used heatsink compound, the IC's should last you.  Good Job on this you saved yourself big bucks!

Wow, talk about convenient.  I turned on my set yesterday and have the same problem with my KP-51WS510.  I have component level electronic repair experience and use to fix TVs back in the day.  Larry, could you send me the service manual also?  Also, where is a good place to order those ICs inexpensively?  I have some heatsink compund that I use for computer CPUs.  Will this work for a good heatsink coumpound for the ICS? Thanks in advance.

Its been a while since I responded.  But I replaced the two ICs and it fixed my convergence problem.  Thanks everyone for the assistance.
