Tom, If you are pretty handy, you should really have no problem trying the repair yourself. There are a couple of good links I will send you to help you make up your mind. If the TV set was mine, I would try to fix it first before throwing up my hands and buying a new one. Good Luck with your repair.
Thanks for the information, I've read it over several times and do believe that this is something that I will be able to do myself. Are you aware of a reputable internet site where I can purchase the "quality" IC's & replacement PICO fuses you reference?
The two pico fuses are on the G board and should be small yellow tubular devices. Put the multimeter on ohms or on the continuity checker. When you measure across the resistors, the meter should swing all the way to 0 (zero), or on continuity, you should here a beep if it is good.
Great thread! I just picked up a used kp43ht20 last night. It looks great with the exceptions of blue and green being slightly off on the left 1/4th of the screen, and the overall red level being too high. I've corrected things like this on my old RCA but I've never played with a digital service menu.
What settings do I need to stay away from and could you send me a copy of the manual?
John, I have attached the two links that I think you should go over before you proceed with this repair. If I have the service manual I will send you a copy of it. I will also send you out a copy of the Sony convergence procedture manual good for most Sony Projection TV sets. Good Luck with the repair.
KIMx25, I would use what comes out of the set. If you are not an engineer and can not run several safety test, it is always a good practice to replace parts rated same as the ones being replaced.
I think the assistance you are providing on this forum is amazing! Thank you for all the insignts and help!
When I first found this forum, I was amazed to see so many people with the same problem. I, too, have a Sony KP-43HT20 with convergence issues.
It seems the red "gun" is producing the bowtie pattern mentioned by others, although the blue and green seem to be fine. So I have a couple of questions for you:
We've got the same problem as others. KP-51WS500 with a red screen and lines and shuts off after a few seconds. There are 8 blinks, so based on the information in this forum (for which I'm grateful) I'm hoping it's the inexpensive board.
That service manual is NOW available through the techlore download server HERE. It is a brand new service we are offering to the members here at techlore! Good Luck with your repair.
I found the original replacement parts (SANYO STK392-560) online at B&D for $14.97 a piece, and ordered them along with a half dozen 3.5A picofuses (they were cheap). Opened the set and removed the old IC's from the D board, then checking thepicofuses found PS8003 was the only one open. Checked everything on the G board, and it all checked out OK. Replaced the IC's and picofuse, then, as long as I had the set open, cleaned off the lenses. mirror and back of the screen.
Fired that baby up, and adjusted the convergence per Larry's instuctions, and it looks better than it had in years! Picture is sharp, bright and beautiful again!
Kim and Mike, great news you were able to repair your TV set and save a ton of cash. Feels good does it not? Thanks for being a part of techlore.com and we do have a lot of other great items of interest besides help with your TV set. Explore and enjoy techlore. You will be happy you did.

steve2007 said: Larry, Would you happen to have a copy of a Sony KP-43HT20 Service Manual that you could send me:) I have a convergence problem ( bowtie pattern - picture clear in the middle and colors separted on the left and right ). I would like to try and fix the problem by replacing the convergence ICs. Thank you. Steve
What is the STK part number for a convergence IC peice for the Sony KP-51WS500? I have downloaded all other stuff you offered for other people and now just need the parts to get started can you help?
That's is why you should write down every value you change. Sorry to say, there really are no original values. You might get a little closer with someones values but it is up to each TV set, the parts tolerances, the age and how much it has been used. If you do not have a service manual fior this set, get one, we may even have it posted here in the technicians corner for you. there is also a convergence adjustment manual there. That information can be found HERE It will at least help you with the adjustments. Good Luck
I'm having a problem with my TV. It's a Sony KP-51WS500. I turn it on and the screen turns red but you can still see a picture. After about 5 seconds the picture fades and the screen goes all red. The standby light started blinking also.

I'll look at mine this evening & see which IC's I have...
Can you provide me guidance on checking the PICO fuses with a multimeter? I do have one, but I'm unsure how to use it to test these fuses.
Thanks!
Tom

Hello Mr. Dillon,
Just want to say thanke for the manual for the sony TV. I replaced the two IC's, 1 fuse and fine tuned the convergance grid.
The TV is working just fine at a cost of $21 dollars for the parts.
Thanks again.
Wow! That's great man. You saved at least 300 bucks or so on your repair! I like very much to hear these types of stories.

Hi Larry
I would like to ask you about fuses.
Is the yellow 3.15 A SONY fuses, slow or fast blow?
And could I replace one with regular green.

It seems the red "gun" is producing the bowtie pattern mentioned by others, although the blue and green seem to be fine. So I have a couple of questions for you:
1) I'd like to get the service manual if possible. Please send it to [email protected] on [email protected] (or both)
2) I took a look at the process for Sony Convergence Repair (http://www.techlore.com/article/19694/Sony-Convergence-Repair/). If I have a bad convergence IC or pico fuse, as it seems from the article, would it hurt anything to try to adjust the convergence using the information from the Sony Convergence Procedure (http://www.techlore.com/article/19631/Sony-Convergence-Procedure/) just to see if it makes any difference? Or would that likely screw things up so when the IC is replaced convergence is a bigger problem?
3) As a follow up to #2 - is there a default setting?
Thanks again!
Mike

Repair Update - Success!
Replaced the (2) IC's, checked continuity on all the pico fuses and I'm back in business.
Thanks for all your help Larry!
Hi Larry:
I was a PTV tech back in the day. I need to help a friend out and repair his sony KP-57ws510 ,with his description sounds like a convergence prob.
Can you send me a copy of the service manual?
I guess I need to get the STKs, what other parts should I bring with me to do this repair in 1 visit?
I just found this forum/site and am psyched. I am an electronics teacher and have had trouble finding manuals and service tips.
Thanks very much in advance for any help you might provide!
It took some time for me to get right parts.
Chip IC8001 has been replaced, fuse PS8001 (red horisontal) has been checked.
After I have enter a service menu and pressed "Flash focus" it took some time
and red convergence was fixed.
I would like to thank all guys (including moderator) who helped me to achive that result.
Really great forum.

They are the STK392-560. Use only original Sanyo IC's.
Could someone send me their original values for Green, BLue, and Red;
cent, skew, size, lin, key, pin, mlin, msiz. I adjusted before I replaced IC's and need a little help gettin back to normal.
Thanks, Ryan [email protected]
