Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

Have a Sony KDF-e42A10. The screen is going off and the standby/power light is blinking 47-48 times. Comes back on for appox. a minute or less, then goes back to blinking 47-48 times again. Is this something worth looking into further, or is it time to buy a new tv? I've been trying to search for answers, but haven't seen what the exact problem is. Thank you in advance.

your bulb is going out, also you might want a technician to clean the fans on the inside.

Don't be surprised if you see color blotches after you replace the bulb. This will be dust in the optical block. not too much you can do about that.

I have a Sony KDL-52W4100. When you plug it in the wall socket it turns on, screen lights up for about 10-15 seconds, then shuts down with a repeatative blinking code of 14 blinks. I have read that it might be the T-con board. Can anyone confirm that or provide more diagnostic informaation. Thanks

Looking to get a sony projection TV in my area. I have been told it has a code 2 fault. Does the OCP circuit apply in projection TV's? Could this be a sign that a fuse blew on the power supply?

I have a seven year old Sony WEGA that will not power on at all. The Stand By TImer blinks 7 times. The model number is not accessible because the TV weighs too much to move. It is a tube tv - do we need to replace?

Good Morning,

I have the 5 blinking issue, i can unplug my tv and it will reset itself for a while ( sony WEGA 60" rear projection ) ? How do I test the the boards to dtermine if they are bad, where can I buy the parts ? Your time is apreciated by all of us !!

                                         Thanks,

                                                   Barry

Continuous blink once a second, no pausing on sony lcd proyector KDY55XS955

Blinking codes of sony tv were just a clues that tv had a problem on that section. Thanks for publishing...

i have a problem with my sony kdl46hx800 46 inch
tv has worked fine for 11 months, but now it will turn off as soon as i turn it on.
if i turn the tv off, and leave it off overnight, it will stay on for a few minutes, before just clicking off/staying off again on it's own.
the little red light in the bottom left of the frame will blink 7 times, then pause off, then restart and blink 7 times again, continuously.

what i've done: i understand it's a 'high voltage/safety shutdown' issue, so i've unplugged it from the multi outlet, and directly into the wall. no change. i'm not sure what to make of the advice, 'check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.'

Hi...you've done nothing wrong just the tv have a problem. Its hard for DIY to troubleshoot the problem if you don't have any knoledge in electronic circuitry. Your tv have a problem on high voltage and to cure that you have to start troubleshooting on it power supply. If the power supply is good and the tv don't start up then you will go to horizontal circuit. Again, if you don't have knowledge in electronics i suggest you to bring the tv to technician because  the problem of your tv is not simple...just to give you an idea, every tv had a safety feature and called protection circuit to monitor  the supply voltages produce by power supply and shut it down when it gives above requirements to avoid fire. Power supply and horizontal drive circuit were working together to fire up the flyback  and the flyback will produce a high voltage to fire up the cathode ray tube.

My tv is displaying only the standby button and it is blinking 8 times I know this is an audio problem but I have no idea how to fix it can u help me to find the solution

Patricia burchill said: My tv is displaying only the standby button and it is blinking 8 times I know this is an audio problem but I have no idea how to fix it can u help me to find the solution

Hello Patricia....tools you need are screwdriver to open your tv, VOM meter or multimeter for measuring voltages, soldering iron and lead plus soldering pump or weak. ASk for guidance with person knows in basic electronics or just surfing in youtube might help for lets say just typing the word SOLDERING/DE SOLDERING something like that...

Here's the procedure: Open the tv back cover by unscrewing all screws there. Locate the speaker + sign which is the positive polarity then follow that line and it will reach you to IC which is the audio IC. write the part no. of that IC and gogle it or open this site www.alldatasheet.com. on that site type the part no. and it will give you the result in PFD file open it and you will see what is the function of its IC's pins.  There is a pin mark with VCC or VDD and thats the supply pin. remember what pin that is. Now, go back to your tv power it ON and locate the pin with VCC on the actual IC. Set your meter to DC and put the black probe to cold ground which is the outer metal of the tv's tuner then put your red probe to the said VCC pin. You will see on your meter about in between 9v to 19v.Now if you get below to what i have said voltage, re-solder that IC and check again the voltage on that VCC pin slot on the board with power on and observe if the voltage is in tolerance 9v to 19v. If you get in between 9v to 19v meaning that IC is bad and replacing it will cure the issue. But on the said process you still get the same voltage as the first test,it means the IC is good and the problem is the supply. what you are going to do is to trace back that line going to power supply and i don't want you to do that because it so technical. It is better to bring the tv to the shop because you will be dealing here a lot of parts to test and its dangerous for you. Its better to spend a few dollar than to be electricuted. But if you have a knowledge in electronics well go ahead with caution. Hoping this idea will help you..

Thanks for this -I have a KDL-46xbr also with 13 red led flashes - the first symptom is what I experienced (ccfl). I have been told that it was the weather - turn the power off and power cable out for 30 mins and then power on.

While this has worked I have 1 month on the extended warranty. Is this likely a fault that will reoccur.

Also to note this is the 3rd time I have had issues with it and have not been impressed with Sony's workmanship on their flagship model (at the time).

Is there an onscreen Display of the faults so I can capture them? some sony sets have, you can press a key combination for the display of the errors.

I am told that your analysis is in the US not Australia it is the inverters and the humidity ( not that we have had humidity in the last week) that causes the issue. Now they cannot fault it and therefore cannot send back a non faulty part?

Hi Hollie, the problem of your tv is in power supply. Try opening your tv set and visually check some bulging capacitor and replace it.If you donnot see any, send your tv to the shop. But if you know electronics, concentrate on power supply area, vertical section and jungle IC.

Just wonderinf ifyou can help me narrow down my search for the components that may be a fault for 6 Blinks in my rear projection Model No. KP-FS57M31. I had a look for the ones suggested above and was unable to locate. Would they have a different designation for this model

In have a sony TV Serial number KP- 46WT500 it won't start The standby lite blinks 6 times then pause and blinks 6 time over and over again but won't start, how can i reset this TV to start again Help "Thank you"

To all the tv have 6 blinks code, the problem of your tv is high voltage were missing. Of course, the tv really won't start. you have to send your tv to the shop because its not a problem that you can cure only by some sitting or re-sitting.. To tell you the truth even a technician like me sometimes having difficulties diagnosing that kind of problem mostly if i don't have a schematic diagram with the model.

My sony tv shuts down after being on for about a minute when it comes backn on it blinks 3 times stays on for about 30 seconds then shut off when its off it blinks 30 times, then comes back on with the 3 binks on the stand/by again what could it be and how to fix it thanks

My TV screen turns red hue on dark scenes of movies and TV shows and will turn on standby mode and flash 8 times

I have a sony Wega that will not turn on but blink 6 times on the standby light. Wondering what the problem is? Thanks

I have a Sony KDSR60XBR1 with led blinking 3 times. Is there anything I can do to fix this myself that is fairly easy. I don't have any real tech experience, but am willing to try if not to difficult. Is the tv worth fixing, its 6 years old.

Thanks

The model number provided is for a DLP TV. Have you checked the basics like the lamp and the cooling fan?

On a rear projection Sony if you have 4 to 10 blinks it is typically the MCZ chips.

Hello fellow techies!
Hoping you can help me! My roommates TV out of the blue just kicked the bucket.. Its a Sony LCD KLV-32m1.. I'm 99% positive its the power supply which I have out already but I am not seeing any bulging/leaking capacitors or anything that looks like it needs to be replaced.... If ANYONE can help it would be much appreciated!! Thank you in advance!

If the bulb goes bad, how many times will the error code blink?

I have a Trinitron KV-32HS510 that wont come on,I unplugged it 4 times for a while, after the first time I tried turning it back on I got (5 red blinks) the second time was (7 red blinks) the third was (4 red blinks) and now its (4 red blinks) what do I do??

I have a sony sxrd 50" that had blown a lamp. I replaced the lamp and am getting a blinking green light that turns to red and blinks 3 times over and over. I checked to make sure the lamp cover was making contact with the micro switch. It still does the same fault. Any suggestions?

Hi, I have a Sony Trinitron that turns on fine then the picture continuously blinks on and off. It also happens when you put a dvd in as well.

i have the sony kds-r60xbr1 projection television. i replaced the lamp. i lost the remote control. i bought a universal remote. i do not get a picture. the red light blinks 3 times. now what? i dont know what to do? the lamp tests good.

My Sony KD-XBR960 when power is off will blink 6 times, stop and continue 6 times, etc. When I power it on, it blinks around 15 times then shuts off. If I pull the plug from the wall for about a week, sometimes two, plug it back in, it works. But then when I turn off the set, it's starts the 6 blinking again when sets not on and I can't get it to power up again. I purchased the TV in 2005. Thanks for any assistance you have in advance.

sony 42"Grand Wega. Powers on, screen doesnt come on. Goes directly to stand bye blinks for 30 sec. Then switches to lamp then that blinks continously. Screen remains black the whole time. The ligts are flashing red.

Thanks for the info on the Standby Blink Codes! I have a Sony KDL-46V25L1 that has the Standby indicator blinking eight times after I attempt to turn the unit on. After pressing the power button on the remote, the green power indicator turns on, I hear a relay (?) click a few times (once was normal), then the power indicator turn off and the standby indicator blinks eight times, pauses and repeats. The is no display. The night before it died we experienced some loud pops (audio) as the cable was going in and out so I am wondering if it is indeed an audio problem. Another TV on a different cable box but on the same channel did not have the audio pops. Then again, could be a power problem too.

I saw a previous post regarding checking the power and will do that once I get it off of the wall and the back removed. I am comfortable doing the repair once I determine the problem.

BTW - the service manual, now in the download area, has some Power LED blink codes on page 11, you may want to update the first page.

Any additional thoughts and comments are welcome.

Thanks again for posting the Standby Blink Codes.

I have a Sony Bravia model kdl-46xbr which continuously goes into stand by mode, then flashes red light 6 times.

Any suggestions?

anybody knows where is the power supply circuit on a sony tv with the model kdf-50e2000 and where is the t603 and r672

hello,

I have an old sony trinitron KV-29FX30K, and it blinks 11 times (no audio or video). I read all 27 pages with comments, but seems nobody knows what is with this 11 blinks error code. Anyone can help?

Thank you!

Looks like the blink code definitions are going to vary from one device to another.  Eight blinks on the KDL-46V25L1 indicate the video processor board needs to be replaced.  I found a new one, installed it and all looks good.

Search Google for "KV-29FX30K, and it blinks 11 times" ,  Third result is a PDF for the Service Manual.  Quick View shows 11 blinks is a Jungle controller 8 volts error.
