Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

technicaly this is a tempiture error, under normal circumstances i would beleve the Temp sensor connector is not attached securely.(CN110 on HB board,CN160 on S2 board) or the temp sensor is bad. But this is not consistant with lightning, so if it is throwing a 2 blink error most likeley it is the microprocessor board having isues because of the power surge, but again you may have multiple boards that have failed. so if you replce the micro (i think it is b board) you may still have issues. This will be very difficult for an owner to diagnose it realy needs to be gone over by a qualified tech.

Thanks for the help zapdbf. I'll see if i can find someone to take a look at. Just don't have a lot of $ to pay a tech to tell me to trash it or it'll cost me more to fix than to buy a new one! Thanks again for your help!

I have a kp51ws500 tv, it comes on for about 30 seconds, then goes off, and the timer/standby light blinks 8 times, is off for about 3 seconds, then blinks 8 times again. Any ideas about this?

One more question for you all. Does anybody know if a sony dlp model kdf-55e2000 might have all the same internal circuit boards and chips and stuff as say a kdf-42e2000? I'm trying to find another tv that might have damage in other places and see if i can swap out internals until mine starts working again. If anybody knows and also if anybody has one near wichita, KS please let me know

Hi, I have a KDF-E50A10. It don't turn on. The power button and the remote control doesn't work either. When I connect to the power supply the Power/Standby light first blinks 4 times in green, then blinks 6 times in red and don't stop, keeps repeating the 6 time blinking. It could be the lamp?!

Thanks

I have a sony bravia 50 unit goes to standby mode then three blinks please help and is it going to cost me a lot to fix

Please could you help i have a sony bravia unit goes to stand by mode then 3 blinks

Same problem as all others on Sony Vega, found out 7 blinks mean:

High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.

How can I fix this problem? Thanks all!

Steph

I am having sony trinitron. When put on there is no pic or sound for 5-6 minutes after that ghost image appears and then everything is ok.The time of pic and sound coming ok depends on ambient temp.what may be the problem.

my tv in blinking twice then pause and then again 2 blinks and this happens continually, I have no idea what it is with the description on two blinks

model kp-57hw40 june 2002. The tv turns on picture goes a little red moon shades then turn off. blicking light 8 times. dont knowv what to do!

My tv kdf50e2010 has a red line on top of screen can anybody help

hi i am hoping someone can shed some light. I have a sony kdl 46w5500. The standby light is flashing 14 times and then pauses for a couple of seconds and repeats the 14 cycle again. Does anyone know what the problem might be?.

ph38 If you see a brief picture before you get the 14 blink then it is the panel. If not then It could be the power board.

that is a balancer error, this means that one of the tiny florescent bulbs in the panel are bad.(if you see it turn on for a moment) This requires a panel replacement which is more than the cost of a new tv. Most repair shops will not fix this but if you are brave you can buy a bulb and put it in. sony will not support bulb replacement and no sony service center will support this while the tv is in warranty. I have done this before but it is tricky and you can easily destroy the panel. Before you do anything take it to a tv repair shop.

my tv wont turn on at all. it blinks green like it is about to turn on, but then it starts blinking red and is in standby mode. can i fix it?

#KP65WS500 I need Electric adjustment convergence.
Need help on red Horizontal lineanity and width control.

I have a question regarding the article titled "Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes". In the article it states "To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power". Do I press the Channel + or the Channel - before hitting the # 5? My Sony remote (model #RM-V302) does not have just a "channel" button.

I have a very old box style 60" Sony T.V. (can't get the model # until I hire some guys to move it out of my wall) the picture will go in and out and sometimes go blank for less than a minute before going back to normal. If I shut the TV off at night, in the morning it will take 2 to 5 minutes for the picture to come on so I just don't turn the TV off anymore but i still have the intermittent problem with the picture. Any ideas of what could be wrong? or can you please answer my "Channel button" question so I can bring up the diagnostic screen?

I have a Sony KV-36SBR400 and I get the 4 blinking lights when I try to turn the tv on. What is it that needs to be repaired and about how much am I looking at?

Thank you in advance.

hi my sony bravia kdf50e20000 i have red light on tv if its on stand by when i turn it on red light goes off but no green light comes or even blinks and no picture comes on

I have a Sony 42" LCD rear projection TV, model KF-42WE610. When I turn it on I get audio and a blank (kind of blue) screen. The indicator light flashes green continuously. I believe it's the lamp but am not for sure. Any advice would be approeciated.

Have a Sony KP-61HS10 - no sound or picture - 4 red blinks that repeat. Is it worth repairing? Thanks in advance

blinking continuously is most likely a lamp try this first.
3 blinks is a cover error, re seat the bulb cover, very common, also reseat the bulb there are two switches one under the bulb and one in the door if one is not making contact it will not work and you will get a 3 blink.

4 blinks is a fan problem one of your fans have stopped turning look in the back and see if you can identify which fan there are 3 one for the bulb, one for the light engine and one for general cooling.

Hi,

Hi,

I Have a Sony HDTV Grand Wega #KDF-E42A10. It is 5 years old. While watching it, it turned off by itself. I was told to replace the lamp. I bought the lamp that goes with the TV (Sony XL2400 Replacement Lamp). I replaced the lamp according to the manual's instructions and made sure it was put back properly. I waited a bit, then turned on the TV. It turned on (green light blinked a few times) then it immediately turned off by itself (2 seconds). After it turned off, the red light blinked 4 times, paused, 4 times again. What else can be wrong with it? Please advise. Thanks.

one of the three fans are not turning or not turning fast enough.

i have a dlpbtv model sony kf50we610 with continous green blinking
light no pausing no pics no sound already replace lamp same symptom
any help is highly appreciated

thanks

alex

i have a rca 52'floor flat screen the power button will flash on n off but screen will not come on

I have a rca projjection 52 and the power light will flash but screen wont turn on

have a sony tv 57 inch and it will blink all the time how can I fix this

My sony tv 57 inch blinks all the time how can I fix this

Here's a challenging one. I have a 42" Sony KF-42WE610. Replaced bulb in 2007. Worked great ever since. In the last week, the picture bagan to freeze but still had audio. Then picture would disappear entirely and the screen would show vertical column of green. Now the picture appears and disappears, leaving the screen with only white mosiac pattern on black. All the while I still have good audio. This happens on each video source -- cable box, DVD, HDMI input, etc.
There are no blinking erro codes nor are there any self-diagnostic mode error codes after pressing DISPLAY 5 - (vol) and then right joystick. All codes are 0. I am truly puzzled how to diagnose this. Couldn't find a similar post here so I thought I would give it try by posting. Thank you in advance for any response.

if you have antenna it is poor reception, that is the new snow, digital channels will not show snow when the signal is weak, it will get blocky and freeze up. Check your cable connections.

ronda, can;t help not enough information, be specific, also need full model number.

aleks your tv is an projection lcd not a dlp, the continual blinking can be many things. If the tv has been repaired before and the lamp ballast replaced there is a black looping wire around the ballast if this is not positioned correctly a bad bulb or bulb connection will not be sensed and the tv will keep trying to strike the bulb without showing a failure code. Moving this wire to the correct position but it will not fix your problem, but it would show a bulb error.

Unfortunately there are many issues that can cause this and I would recommend a professional diagnostic from a sony authorized technician.

I have a sony tv model number kdf-50e2000 power light flashes red five times pauses then startflashing red again and screen stays black tried unplugging tv didnt work what does code mean and what do I need to check or replace thanks

the bulb was replaced about 3 years ago and only now giving problems

I have a Sony Model # KP-61XBR38. The picture goes fuzzy and squeezes inward from both the left and right side and the top and bottom then the screen will go blank and then go back to normal again. While the screen is fuzzy and squeezing inward there is no sound (except for a faint hum)and the red power light goes off. When the screen goes blank the sound comes back and the red power light comes back on. I have noticed that the screen tends to distort more often when the picture is mostly white. Can anyone please tell me what the problem might be?

I posted this earlier. It is not the cable connection. The TV has a picture for 5-10 minutes and then it disappears. No error codes. But still have audio. It seems something must be getting hot. The fan runs. Any suggestions?

I have a Sony KDF 60WF 655. I replaced the lamp but still no picture. The green light flashes 5 times. What should I do?

are you sure it is not a 6 blink, count carefully, don't see many with 5 blink codes.

Good day,

try this first http://esupport.sony.com/
