Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

Where can I get a visual or a description of the Q8014 or Q8013 of the SONY Rear Projector TV?

I read that you have access to repair manuals for Sony TVs. I have a friend that has a Sony KP-57WS500 that quit working (No picture, and it turns itself off 5 seconds after after turning on). Do you have an eloctronic version of the manual? If so, would it be much trouble to e-mail it to me at [email protected]. Any help would be appreciated.

What happened to all the previous comments in this thread?

I came back to get some info from 2 of them and it's all been cleared out.

This forum has been helpful to me in deciding how to handle my Sony problem and also in guidance choosing its replacement.

whT info are you looking for?. AS far as I know techlor does not "clean' OUT files

My Sony Vega is doing the blinking thing, It blinks like normal on statup but only has audio- then turns itself off. After that it gives me 10 blinks- with no audio and repeats 10 blinks over and over untill I turn it off. I got it to work for me later in the day, picture and audio. Now the red light blinks 5 time while watching it. Is there any way of doing a reset? Or someting. I am going to leave it on till I find out whats wrong.

Thanks

sounds like a problem in the light circuit, maybe a bad bulb?, or maybe a bad ballast circui?, mayb epower supply, many thing can cause this, it will need io be cheked out by measuring voltages, no really commen fault I have ran across, now maybe some other Sony tech has seen this problem?

I have a sony 36XBR800 and when I turn it on it clicks a couple of times. The standby light blinks 4 times. I have a service manual and I couldn't find the IC's listed here in the manual. Do these IC's have a different part number ?

Thanks!

My SONY 54 inch turns on fine stays workinng for a minute or so before I lose the picture. The green light stays lit & after a minute or so the picture comes back on and same series starts and repeats ad infinitem. If I turn it off and on eventually the diagnostic light blinks 5x stops and repeats 5x cycling. Can you help? Hi! Hoping someone can help. Our TV blinks seven times? What are we supposed to do now? Can we fix it ourselves? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello... I have a problem with my Sony KDL-40S3000 the standby light blinks 11 times over and over. It was playing fine then just saw a thin line horizontaly (it was made by color squares) and picture went out... I got it to come back on for like 10 seconds but i did the same thing again.

***UPDATE***
I reset the TV alot of time (too many to remember) and to my surprize it started working fine again!!!... hope it doesn't act up again =)

Hello. I probably shouldnt post here but i dont know how else to get ahold of LARRY. I have read another post about the mitsu ws55813 about instructions and schematics on how to repair the DM BOARD> I was wondering if you could possibly send me the instructions or maybe give me an idea of how to get ahold of them.
thanks larry [email protected]

So I replace the Convergance IC's and a pico fuse and it works fine now but still blinks..  Is there a way to reset the tv so it doesn't blink or do I still  have a problem?

Are you familiar with turning up your screen?   LK Blanking?  Any idea on how to do this?

Anyone have an idea of the cost to repaie a sony wega KV-36XBR800 tv with 7 blinking standby lights. The tv works just fine sometimes and at other times it won't turn on and we get the 7 blinking lights. One day it will work and the next day we get the 7 blinking lights. I don't want to pay the service man to come out and diagnose the problem if it is something that is very expensive to fix. If that is the case, i would rather put the money into a new tv. I do like this tv, however, and will fix it if the repair cost is reasonable. Any rough ideas of the cost to fix this problem? Thanks

Thanks. I will try to reset my sony... I believe I get 6 blinks ,I get audio but no picture. 52 in hdtv .

my sony kp-46wt520 has 10 blinks, pause 3 sec then 10 blinks again. no picture only sound and shuts off to standby after a few seconds.
Turn it on again and it'll have 5 blinks, pause 3 sec then 5 blinks.
This would cycle randomly every time I turn on the set.

I've replaced all the components recommended on the D-board (Q8014, Q8013, R8051 and IC8005) and tested all the diodes and resistors to make sure none were shorted.

Still didn't work. Any help and or suggests please?

Larry,

I am not sure how to contact you directly but I require assistance with correcting the convergence on my Sony HD Rear projection TVs. I was able to purchase the service manuals and enter service mode but there is sometimes a reference to using a signal input to manually correct the convergence. Aside from the crosshatch that is standard with the tv, is there a was to input this 'signal' grid to help with GRB color convergence? Thanks.

My Sony Wega 36" widescreen 1080i TV has 10 blinks. It would turn on eventually after 5 or 6 goes but now it refuses to respond. We can hear the sound come on and the sound of the tube deguazing(?).
I am a control system technician so am handy with a soldering iron and can read drawings, but here my knowledge of TV's stop. Anybody have any clues? I hear a lot about 9 blinks, but not much on ten?

GO TO "ungerstanding Sony BLINK codesit is am article here on techlore, also replace the two diodes on the G Board.

I have a 52 in sony wega tv which has 6 blinks. I read above what it may be(No Horizontal Fault) but what does this mean and what do I do now???? Thanks

OK ThanX, this is the right forum, from the starting post it says

"Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board"

If some one can verify that this has worked for them and any hints/tips they came across, I will order the bits and have a go...

hi, I have a sony trinitron, model KV24LS35U. was working fine but now stanndby light blinks 11 times. Is it worth getting fixed or scrap it? many thanks Dan

I have a Sony KDF-55xs955 rear projection LCD purchased in Nov. 2006 that will not power on and the green LED is blinking 6 times.  We had a service technician come out to take a look and immediately said the issue was a $450 power supply without even touching the TV.  I have now looked at a couple of forums that say 6 blinks = No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, which doesn't sound much like a power supply to me.  Is the tech trying to rip me off?  Is there a way to know what it should cost me?

hey i was reading this blog and i was trying to see who cld help me...my tv is blinking 7xs and now im stuck...idk what to do so if anyone can help i wld really appreciate that thanks :0)

i have a sony trinitron model kV28HX1SU and we have no picture or sound and the stand by button is blinking permanently.

I have a 54 inch Sony Wega that turns on for a while then it will lose picture and sound both. It will stay off for about 45 seconds and come back on and play for a while and repeat this again and again. What is this problem and estimate for repairs? TV is 3 years old.
