Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

I have a KDF 55wf655. After a couple of minutes (maybe only 1) the TV turns OFF by itself. The green OFF/ON light remains green and flashes constantly for about one minute or so and the TV comes back on. It only stays on for a minute or so and repeats the problem again and again.

I'm thinking a power supply or something similar. Anything a "do it yourselfer" can handle?

Had code 4 on sony 50 inch . replace bulb no help. Pulled back off unit. Found..
a cooling fan not running. Had dust buildup. Blades on fan hitting dust. Cleaned dust and freed fan. Fans runs now. All codes gone tv plays.

I have a Sony XBR Trinitron. At first my tv would come on at times and not other times. But about a week ago it stopped coming on all toghether. I am getting the 6 blinks. Is this something I can fix at home or should I just call a repair man? Thank u for your help

My Sony Trinitron, model : KV-32S42 chassis: AA-2D is having a problem lately, the picture will not display but the sound works fine. The power light will blink continuously or not light up at all. I attempted a fix by removing the power supply board and resoldered IC?s but when I turn on the TV, the power light is doing the same thing, blinking continously without pauses or not blinking at all and also not lighting up and with no picture display and with sound only working. Sometimes if I attempt to power off and restart the picture display will come on with sound. Sometimes not. Seems to be intermittent. Sometimes the TV will work fine but then the picture will start to shrink and from the center of the screen disappear off again with sound only working. The TV seems to work better if started after the power had been disconnected for a long time. Any ideas what else to do on this TV to try to get it working normal? What about replacing the power supply board or just replacing one of the IC?s on the power supply board?

I have a sony KDF-E42A10, that "clicks" as is normal when it comes on, showing the flashing green light; but then it"clicks" again and goes to the red led light, flashing 3 times, and does not come on. just flashing 3 times red, over and over. What is source code T603 and R672? Can someone help?

I HAVE A Sony KP57-WV600. GOT NO PICTURE AND NO SOUND. I HEAR TV CLICK ON THEN OFF AND TIMER/STANDBY SWICH BLINKS 10 TIMES. WILL THIS BE EXPENSIVE TO FIX?

Hello. I have a KDS 60a2000 and just switched my lamp and now wont turn on and have a red light blinking 3 times. Does anyone know what this means? I have seen that alot of you have the light blinking 4 times which indicates fan, but havent seen anyone with the 3 blinks. Please help. Thank you

Hello, having trouble with my Sony projection tv, I'm not sure the model number, sorry not sure where to find it. On the remote it came with it says, rm-y916. Not sure if that helps. It seems like it is turning on, gives me five blinks when turning on, then nothing else follows. No picture, I heard sound, till I started playing with the remote. Thanks for any help.

MINE BLINKS ABOUT 20 TIMES THEN TURNS OFF AND THEN BLINKS 3 TIMES PAUSES AN THEN ANOTHER 3 BLINKS AND SO ON.I HAVE PUT A NEW BULB IN AND STILL NOT GOING.IT DOESN'T LIGHT UP ONLY THE FAN KICKS IN BUT NO PICTURE CAN ANY ONE HELP

My Sony Bravia I get continuous sound but picture goes out and back on every min. Power light blinks green like 35 times

MY SONY IT COMES ON BUT HAVES NO PICTURE BUT HAVES SOUND WAT COULD IT BE?

Help? I can't even get into the service mode? I've tried all the button combos that have been written. Do I need to unhook cable and ps3 player?

I have 5blinking red lights and the whole screen has a greenish tint over the whole picture.

Any help would be Greatly appreciated. ---------<----<@

i have a Sony kdl-32-4000 switched off and it blinks red 4 times what has caused the problem thanks

I also have the 5 blinks on my Sony Trinitron KV-32FS13 and it also has a terrible green tint and there is almost no blue. Can someone point out where the AKB circuit is located preferably with pics? Also can someone tell me how to check the these components "Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board" and where they are located? PLEASE ANSWER.

Dear Valuable People,
I would like to share my problem is that
KV 29 FX66E
when I switch on it tries to open, I can hear a little like 0.6 seconds audio, no video and than goes to stand by and gives 4 times blinking

Any one could help me would be very appreciated

Many thanks in advance

I posted on 9/19 and 9/28 about the problem with my Sony 42" KF-42WE610. I replaced the bulb as suggested but still have the same issue. Picture disappears and then returns after about 10 minutes from when I turn on the set. One bizarre thing I just noticed is that if I use the freeze screen button, the frozen image remains on the split screen as the "live" image comes and goes.

Any suggestions how to proceed?

m965 - 5 blinks on a crt television is a white balance error, this is telling you that the tv cannot achieve a good white balance - most probable cause is a weak picture tube. I will test the tube on a crt analyzer for final diagnosis but in almost all situations it is the picture tube.

sony 4 blinks, this is a vertical deflection error, this usually the vertical output ic has failed. Not user serviceable

Mike Bb, If you tv is still blinking after replacing the bulb the ballast for the bulb is malfunctioning. this circuit is pretty simple to troubleshoot. A flashing picture is one of two things either a bad bulb or a bad ballast. The ballast is not user replaceable.

weggo, your problem is simple 3 blinks is the door switch there are two of them that need satisfied to get your TV operating. Both are located with the bulb. One of the switches are located in front of the bulb, when you push the bulb in make sure it seats in correctly if not you will get a 3 blink. The second switch is on the door it's self make sure it is not warped and seated and locked in, if the door is not exactly placed like the bulb it will not turn on. These switches are very sensitive and it is too easy to not seat the bulb in correctly or not secure the door correctly.

loosafur, 10 blinks is a power board problem or a distribution block problem. in my experience it is usually the ic8002 on the power supply board has failed this is not user replaceable.

lynslee, this is a classic bad picture tube the green tint will give it away, the 5 blinks is because the tv cannot achieve a white balance. But when these tubes go bad sometimes they will have a green haze over the whole picture.

Dear Zapdbf
I saw your comment about 4 times blinking
That you are suspicuios of vertical control IC
Coul you pls give me the name of this IC
I already downloaded the circuit boards
Model is KV29 FX 66E
I would very appreciate if you can guve me specifically
Component names than i will try one by one to check and change them
Best regards
Thank you

sony 4 blinks, that model does not come up are you from the usa? that sounds like a model not sold in the us. if it is not i don't have access to the manual.
If you have the schematic, it will most likely be a 5 pin ic. located on the deflection board (d,de... ect), it will have 3 or 4 electrolydic caps near it. The capacitors and the ic are suspect. also there will be a fuse link to this ic from the power supply, usaly a low voltage winding off of the flyback will supply the voltage, look for a low ohm resistor comming from the power source to this ic, this may also be blown. The caps may not look bad but using an esr meter they should check bad. You might get lucky and see a capacitor that has leaked or puffed up. If so this cap is bad, and it may have taken out the vertical output ic as well.

I have a problem with the red light blinking, it will go off for a few seconds then back to blinking again .... No picture no sound... the box will come on, showing the channel , then back off showing the time.... ...please help..... thanks

Lady ann i need a model number of the tv.

Dear Zapbdf,
You are right this model is not sold in USA
I m from Turkey
Dear Zapdbf,
You r right this model is not sold in USA
I m from Turkey
I can send you the pdfs of circuit board,
I will check that ic and capacitors that you mentioned
Will let you inform later, actually i m out of home
Generally i travel a lot since i m automation engineer
work at field. When i turn back to home i found it no work
My home is in very humidty place and the boards
Seems really oxidite.

My Sony Wega KDS-R50XBR1 will not turn on. It starts to come on then shuts off the red light blinks 4 times.

i have a sony tv, the sensor light in red non stop blinking, how can i get this fix? does this a serious problem, appreciate advise from those who had have the similar experience before.

My Sony Trinitron, model : KV-32S42 chassis: AA-2D is having a problem lately, the picture will not display but the sound works fine. The power light will blink continuously or not light up at all. So I have a Sony KV-36fs12 and I got it from a friend for free a few years ago. Its been great, I love it. About 2 years ago I got a flashing trouble light on the front 5 flashes, But everything looked and worked fine so I never did anything with it. If it ain't broke dont...... well Now it is. I have about 36ish horizantal lines accross the screen that are about 1"ish tall. They alternate from dake line to light to dark to light. All I need now is lines going the other way and I would have a giant checker board....lol Now on bright shows you cant really tell, but on darker shows you can see them very well. Also noticed the other day that when I put a dvd in my dvd player I would get a line that ran vertical and slowly moved from one side of the tv set to the other. But that is only on my dvd player. I have not tried differant cords or even differant inputs yet but I have a feeling that they are probably all related. If someone could please help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. Im not afraid to get elbow deep and break out my soldering iron either.

5 flashes is telling you that the tv could not achieve white balance. It may even start to flash the picture on and off. The lines you are seeing are called retrace lines they are horizontal and slightly slanted. This is the beam homing pulse to send the beam back to the top of the screen. Normally this beam landing cannot be seen because the drive is turned down as low as it can be. When your tv attempts to fix the white balance it adjusts the cathode current until a white balance is achieved. If it needs to over compensate the retrace lines can be seen.

Why is this happening ? -- Well the 5 blink white balance error is telling you that one of the three guns (red, green, blue) is not emitting enough current. Normally this means the picture tube is going bad. 5 blinks tells me that and for me if it was in my shop i would test the crt to make sure it is going bad.

I bet your picture has a red green or bluish tent to it even on the black scenes along with the retrace lines. You picture tube is extremely bad and cannot be producing a very good picture at this point.

I have had customers complain about this before and they say that the picture looks fine. But in actuality i believe that since this is such a gradual thing that people get used to the picture degradation and don't notice it. Put a good tv next to it and you will see a big difference.

Bottom line ... time for a new tv.

I don't know man. The picture looks great. No crazy colors to it. It's real car and the color looks perfect. Is there some capacitors, or something I can replace...lol I hate to go out and buy a new tv because I just don't care for the new flat screens that much.

I am having sony trinitron. When put on there are two blinks and hissing sound for 5-6 minutes after that black and white image appears and then everything is ok.The time of pic coming ok depends on ambient temp.what may be the problem.

I have a sony trinton kv32fs100 i have sound but no picture. Picture comes on and off the red light blinks 5 times. Is it worth getting fixed its 8 years old. Thanks for ur help

I have a 13 month old Sony KDL-40EX500 flat panel LCD that is malfunctioning (doing the 6 red blinks) It try to start up, the start up noise sounds but then it goes black and keeps doing that start up over and over until i shut the tv off (then the 6 blinks start.) I have the back off already, what do I need to fix?

the 6 red blinks you are seeing, is not the same as the ones discussed in this forum. Flat panel tv's have a totally different blink code. I am not familiar with that pattern on that tv. But i can look it up when i get to work on Monday.

just put a reminder post in here and i will see it to remind me to look it up.

Im having problems with my Sony WEGA, when I turn it on all I hear is Audio but no picture then it turns off automatically in a couple of seconds. I counted how many times the red light blinks where it says "Stand By/Timer" it was Six times.

Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.

What does this mean? Do i have to open my tv to fix the problem? I dont know what to do someone please help me :(

Any chance you looked into the 6 blinking lights for the flat panel tv?

travisD that is a back light failure. It could be the mt board but it is more likely a panel problem.

One test - do the backlights flick on for a moment then go off when you first turn it on? - if so then it is a backlight problem in the panel, if not then it could be the mt board.

one or more of the backlights have failed. The backlights are not replicable by sony, the whole panel is bad. Although if you are adventuresome you could look into replacing the defective bulb. this is not a practical approach and the panel is easy to destroy in the process. You can get replacement bulbs from a usa manufacturer that is trying to make these bulbs. But I have found that they are the wrong color of white. But if you place the new bulb in the top or bottom socket and move one of the end bulbs to the burnt out one’s location it is an acceptable picture.
Ccflwharehouse.com makes them.

leonel6 - your problem is on the circuit board and it will need repaired. if you are unfamilure with this, i suggest you take it to a pro.

Hi.. I have a Sony KDL 52w3000. A few weeks back my tv stopped working due to unstable electric current (most probably a power surge). The standby indicator started blinking 3 times intermittently (according to the guide a power supply problem, so far it adds up). I had it checked and the problem seems to be in the power supply panel G2 and the sub panel DF5 (both have transistors blown Q6100 on G2 and Q6406 and 407 on DF5). I have downloaded the service manual and tried to do self diagnostics test. The set seems to respond (light blinks green and seems to respond) but nothing comes on the screen. What does that mean? I am afraid it could be the LCD panel itself. I have now ordered parts from ebay (both power supply G2 and sub panels DF4 and DF5 and hope it would spring back to life if I replace them. Any suggestions on what else i can do?

PS the set was bought in Germany with its power supply 220v while the new parts ordered on ebay are from North American sets (but according to the specs of the models sold in America the power supply is 110-220 so that should not be a problem I hope).

Any light you can shed on this would be really appreciated.

dear

my sony bravia KLV-32Bx320ME6 wont turn on, and it blink 6 times
what should i do, plz help
