Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

Comments

****** PLEASE NOTE ******
These error codes are only good for tv's with picture tubes or tube type big screen televisions; they will not work for any flat panels or lcd projection televisions (the ones with light bulbs in them) The blink codes for these are not consistent with each model like they used to be. Technology has been changing and the codes have been re assigned as needed to accommodate the new technology. The errors are defiantly not like the codes listed here.

if you post your comment?s in separate threads i will help, i am a senior tech for a Sony authorized service shop. It is easier to keep each conversation separate.

I have a Sony 46 inch KDL-46XBR and when in standby mode blinking 13 times gives a buzz then stops, please help.

that is a balancer error, does it come on then turn off again? if so you have a bad ccfl in the panel, if the set does not come on for a second then shut off it is a balancer board. In either case sony will replace the panel.
if it is in warranty they will replace the panel, if it is out of warranty they will want to do the same. But if you are adventuresome you can try to change the bad bulb, but it is easy to ruin the panel by taking it apart, sony does not recommend this and does not support the techs who do. I have replaced bulbs before but it is a challenge because removal of the lcd panel from it's mount is very delicate work the ribbon that is attached to the panel is very fragile if it is handled rough at all it can rip right off the panel, and if this happens there is no fixing it. Some shops may replace the bulb but you need to call them and ask if they will replace a bulb. some shops will refuse to.

Sony LCD Wega, kdf-55xs955, powered on and picture appears. Then picture blinks off. Sound still on from cablebox. Standby light (green) blinks 29 times then picture reappears while standby light blinks about 6 more times. Disconnected other equipment connected to TV, picture blinks off and the standby light blinks 35 times.

The timer and lamp LEDs are not indicating anything is wrong (no color, no blinking)

What is the problem?

post note: I just noticed the red led blinking 3 times after the TV was powered off...hmmm

Hmmm..any particular brand. The bulb was relaced about a year ago

I have the Sony KV35HS500. Year model 2002. Great Hi Def CRT television...but it weighs a ton! Recently it would fail to restart after being recently turned-off. The blinking code was 7. For about a week, it would work fine after being unplugged over night. Then, finally, it now fails to turn on at all...and now has 6 blinking code.

After much research on line, I learned that the very likely fix is replacing the IC8002 and IC6501, both included in the Part# MCZ3001DB (In the past, MCZ3001D now discontinued and superceded by DB?) Reportedly, there are TWO of these 18 pin parts on the "D Board" in the set chassis. I was adivsed to replace one...and then the other, with a 50/50 chance of correcting this problem in the first change-out. Also, I was advised to install the "socket set", which allows a quick "snap-in" of the part. I ordered all of these materials from TSM TV Service in Indiana. Very inexpensive.

Questions: I'm told these parts are fairly easy to find and access on the D Board (True?) I'm told the soldering is fairly easy but take care not to disturb the foil on the board (Comment?) Also, I've read that there may be a "fuse" to replace which might have blown during this fault.

Any comments or advice you may offer will be greatly appreciated. I am awaiting the parts in the mail right now.

Thanks
Rick W

I am not sure what you are asking, but the bulb if it becomes weak will need to restrike to stay lit. these bulbs use a plasma gas, and they have a striking circuit to heat the gas but if the bulb is failing the tv will keep trying to restrike the bulb but after so long of attempting to restrike -it will time out and give you an error. But if it restrikes within the time limit you won't get an error, if your bulb is a year old it is possible your bulb is bad, sometimes but not as often the ballast will cause this but usually as a result of a bad bulb. In either case it will take a bulb and sometimes both bulb and ballast.

Rick, you said your problem was an intermittent failure, sometimes when this problem is intermittent there are 4 caps that can cause this as well, so after you replace these if you still have intermittent failure most likely one of these caps have failed. Soldering is a skill you just need to practice with to learn, the traces on the bottom of the board are easy to tear, always have a clean tip and don?t leave the heat on the pin for long just takes a second to make a solder connection, also you need some solder wick to remove the solder from the ic?s that you are removing. The ic?s are located on the d board near the middle left side. If you have never soldered before there is a danger in damaging the board, I would practice on something else first.

I have a Sony KDF/50we655 tv. It will be on for about a minute then it turns itself off and then back on for about a minute then off again. When it is on it has a picture and sound??? Any suggestions?

If you are seeing 13 blinks on a Sony TV, check out this thread on Agoraquest.com. It might be of use to you!

It doesn't seem to sy about 13 blinks, However I have spokenb to Sony and they advised whatever the part is it is failing prematurely and Sony will extend the warranty. They have ordered the part and will fix free of charge. Once it is fixed I will write in what the part was.

Gypsy,

How did you get Sony to extend the warranty?

Congratulations for keeping this thread alive for so many years.

My TV: SONY WEGA KV32FQ86 [chassis AE6BA]
Symptoms: continuous blinking, no video, no audio, blank white screen.
On start the video shows for a moment, then screen turns blank.
LED blinking (nearly) continuous. More precise: after 20 blinks follows a slighly (~0.5 - 1 sec) longer gap.

have Service Manual, tools, and (some) knowledge and experience.

Any help would be apprecciated.

i have a sony tv and the red light is flashing 17 time on the front of the tv c

Hi I have the same problem mentioned several times in this forum. And I have the problem where it blinks 10 times once then after repeatedley 9 times after over and over again. I did however reset everything back to factory settings and i replaced both diodes on the G board and still get the error 9:ZCD - 20 TIMES.
Everything else is at zero like it should be. I just dont want to waste anymore money trying to repair this set and I just want my tv back. If anyone could please tell me what to do and how to fix this set would really appreciate it. thanks so much and take care guys. JOSHUA

I had 10 blinks on my KDL-40W5100 and so I called Sony customer service. The TV was turning itself off and on every 60 seconds or so, until it turned itself off completely and started blinking 10 times. Sony customer service talked me through some diagnostics and determined a firmware update was needed. Go to the Sony web site and look up firmware update for your model, follow the instructions on how, exactly, to load the update to a USB drive. Plug the USB drive into your machine and it's all fixed.

I have a Sony (model # below) with a 6 blink code. Is that something I (a non-electrician) can fix? If not, what might it cost to have someone fix?

I have had the T.V. for almost 3.5 years

I don't know if I was supposed to start a new post, don't know how to do that. Anyway someone please please help, I have a Sony trinitron KV-20FS100 that is blinking 4X on stand by. It won't turn on, no sound or picture. The tv was bought on April 2003. I tried unplugging it for a day and that didnt help. I suspect that maybe it needs a new lamp or something. I can't afford a new tv right now and would really like to know if this tv can be repaired. Thank you in advance--Lisa

i have a WEGA Sony TV (energy star) while watching, it goes off and the power light blinks 42 times then comes on then after 5 minutes it repeats the problem. wondering if any one had this same problem, if so was if fixable?

Sony KDF-50E2000 My projection lamp burnt out I replaced it wiyh a new oem bulb when I turned the power on = Green power light came on Fan started to run Than All went Quiet, The power light now blinks three times acording to the code chart on this site it is = Over Voltage Protection What Do I Do ??
Thank You In Advance For A Reply

Your bilnk codes are not the same as these, a three blink is a cover error. this means either the bulb is not seated in correctly or the cover is not seated correctly, remove the bulb and re-insert it and make sure the cover is properly latched. Also on a couple of these models the door would warp causing the same issue, but the warping would be obvious, if the door looks melted or warped the tv needs to have the fans cleaned and the door replaced, If you just replace the door the problem will re-occur again. But for now just check the lamp and door seating.

zapdbf == Thank You == I pushed on the Bulb and it seated properly !!

Sony KDF55E2000

Have re-occurring message that lamp life is low for several months. Have not replaced lamp. I know, DUH! TV started turning off and blinks 3 times. I have played with the silly door for hours, removed the lamp housing and cleaned and the tv won't turn on. I can see the lamp illuminate but shuts right off. Ordering a new lamp. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

Sorry, Got ahead of myself. Should I re-post in forums?

not sure if this if this is the spot to ask a qeustion but my sony model
kp-61v85. Iplug it in and clicks and sounds like its powering up but i have no picture and no sound i have no blink codes just the red light if anyone has some input that would be great.

coperhagenjunkie: The three flashes is not a sos code, it is simply telling you it is striking the bulb, you donÂ’t get an sos code till the tv goes into shutdown. I know that this is confusing, but the red light will flash until the lamp strikes it just so happens it strikes every three blinks.

You have a typical bad bulb, the lamp has to keep restriking. be careful if you don't change the bulb you will damage the ballast, the frequent restrikes will fatigue the ballast and cause it to fail early.

zapdbf,please help! Sony KLV-40S200A
TV will come on for a couple of seconds, then go off.
Red light blinks 4 times.
What can I do?
Thanks!
