Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

i have a KDS-552020 and the power light just blinks and i have no picture and it poped while was watching tv last night please help if you can!!!!!!!

i have a Sony KV-36HS20.
when i turn it on, the screen looks really faded and greenish and then it turns off and blinks 5 times..

the service manual says its the white balance..

it says:
Video OUT (IC9001-IC9003) is faulty. (C Board)
CRT drive (IC201) is faulty. (A Board)
G2 is improperly adjusted.

the video out ic, how would i test these? i don't have a way to check the wave forms like the service manual says.

the screen is a bluish green, that could mean the red isnt working?
the picture looks like an old b&w movie.

the CRT drive (ic201) is a very complex ic chip, has about 30 or so micro connectors.. no way to really change that..

and the G2 adjustment, is that the IK blanking thing everyone talks about?

Hi Larry,

About a year ago I found and read your thread on repairing the convergence circuits on Sony rear projection TV's. I printed the article and all Q&A's, ordered new STK IC's from the reputable internet site you suggested. Yesterday, I finally got up the nerve to tackle this project.

Before starting, I took close-up digital photos of the "D" board. I also labelled connections and drew a diagram of the connections. I then removed the "G" and "D" boards and tested the 6 pico fuses on the "D" board and 2 pico fuses on the "G" board using an ohm meter. Surprisingly, all tested good. Because I was expecting different results, I re-checked these results several times, always getting the same results.

I then removed the old STK IC's and installed the new ones. I also coated the backs of the new STK IC's liberally with heat sink compound.

I then reassembled the TV and was ecstatic when the set powered up and displayed a PERFECT picture! I also reset the TV to factory defaults to clear all fault codes.

I watched the TV all day yesterday (6-7 hours) and turned it on and off several times. This afternoon, the TV turned on with the same fantastic picture. After a short time, and all of the sudden, the convergence instantly went out and the picture bowed on all sides, much worse than before.

I've tried an auto focus and also manual convergence, but these did nothing.

My thoughts are that one of the new STK IC's is defective. I remember reading somewhere that new electronic parts, if they are bad, will generally fail within the first 20 hours or so of use. Obviously, I will check all of the pico fuses on both boards again (always check the simple stuff first, right?!) but I am wondering if you concur with my diagnosis and if there is a way to test the STK IC's to determine if one, or both of the newly installed IC's are bad. Obviously, if they are both bad, I'll replace both, ut if only one if bad, I'd prefer to only replace one.

Also, can you please let me know the parts site you've recommended in the past so I can re-order from them again?

I'd REALLY appreciate an email response. My email address is tpbachurATverizonDOTnet.

Thank you for all of your help on this problem!

Hi...

I've got a Sony LCD Rear Projection TV and every once in a while the picture and audio will go completely black while the green standby light blinks 30 - 40 times. Sometimes less ... sometimes more. It's very random...I can go 45 minutes before this happens and other times it happens every 2 minutes.

Does anyone have any suggestions. I haven't seen this problem talked about on the blogs...

Thanks in advance

Geoff

Model: KDF60XS955

I have a K34HS510 with 'D' board problems (apparently). It is chassis DA4, build date of 12/2003. The D board was replaced under warranty (just). 3-4 years later the D board is gone again. I just got a flat screen to replace it, but kept the unit hoping to fix it. This thing has a KILLER sound system that it seems a SHAME to waste, but the BehemotH size/weight makes it hard to deal with.
Larry seems to be the GURU, so here goes-
plug it in, the SB light blinks 7 times rather slowly, during which it clicks some relay and blinks the memory slot light once, then begins a repeat of 6 blinks, faster blinks than the first 7, but 6 each time.
This seems to be the same or similar symptom from the first time (when the D board was warranty replaced). Sony and the local shop have been reluctant to give me any relief, as it appears is common from reading the threads.
A good friend is a longtime (20+ years with TV station) technician, but has a bad back, so I've not asked him to work on this monster. However, I think I can pull the board and get him to do chip replacement, if that's in order.
Where is the best place to obtain the ICs, and is the MCZ3001DB the latest and greatest? We'll probably do the 'socket' trick, just for the future.

Hello Larry, my KDS-60A2000 is now going out while it's on. The red light blinks four (4) time. I'm going to remove the lamp, blow it out and as always it will start up again but who knows for how long before this happens again.

Please help!

i have a Sony TV model kv32h5420 it is blinking red code it blinks 7 times does anybody have an answer for this fix thanks

I have a sony KDF50e2000 its standby light blinks four times, I have read that its something to do with overheating so i used a can of air and a vacuum and cleaned it and still nothing is it junk??

yes ive found what it means and would like to know how to fix it please

Ok, here's what it says for four (4) blinks. "Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505" I don't get any horizontal line. The tv just plain turns off. After I remove the lamp, blow everything out with compressed air the tv come back to normal. I ran the diagnostics test but it came up with nothing.

So lets assume that the horizontal line flashes so quick the we don't see it before the tv turns off. Where or how do I check "Check IC1509, Q1505"?

I have the same prob. with my kdf 55xs955 tv. the red standby light blinks 6 times. please someone help. where can i get it fixed. i had a

I have a Sony Bravia KDL46V2500. I have power light on but it blinks only once after couple of seconds. there is no picutre and sound, TV seems like dead. Any body has clue about it ?

My Sony rear projection tv has no picture and the light is blinking 7 times. Have you heard of this issue or have any idea how to fix this? There is just static sound. The lights have about a 2 second pause before they start up again.

I have a sony SXRD KDS-60A2000 and one night the screen went blank and the green light just continuously flashes, please help!

Larry,

I downloaded the tech manual for my sony, (51ws510), and read your article on blinking lights (very helpful brought up service screen and had #6).  in the tech man it said that code was either the A board or the B board.  No prob there, but when I went to look at the schematics in the manual ...those pages were missing ( I think it was page 54 - 80 something don't quote me)  are these schematics available, or are they not distributed with the service mans (SM)?   Anyway, a quick glimpse at my prob:  TV started just turning off intermittently about 2 days ago (my wife says it happened to her about 4 days ago and thought I was screwin with her).  I didn't pay much attention to the lights blinking (of course until I found this site and your article, thnx) until today,  it is the 6...6...6...6 (had to add that last 6 on there).  Then i pulled up the service menu and it also said 6 (Low B).  In the SM it state that could be the A or B board.  I have access to test equip, and thought I'd pull apart and look, but don't know sig flow without the C & Ds.  Points in the right direction would be appreciated.

Hi Larry..I have what I'm hoping is a small issue..I have a Sony KDF42WE655 and I am getting 0 sound as of this am picture is great btw..ran the self-diagnostics and got 0''s all the way down the list then onto svc mode and still no codes tripped..Is it my speaker that is blown or is that too easy to be the solution..curious
Here is the svc readout:

OP GA 0 4 SERVICE
DLY1 FULL COMP2
WSL: 0 480I

not sure why its reading 480I it should be at 1080I..
Hope that helps..

My Sony kds-60a2000 will not power on and the light flashes red 4 times. I read a post with the same problem and I think I need to take out lamp and clean. Can you please instruct me how to do this and if it is in fact what I need to do. Thanks

Hi,

Hi,
I have a KDP57WS655D and it has error 9:ZCD. The standby light repeatedly blinks 9 times. From what I've read, I need to replace diodes 6116 and 6301 on the "G" board. Is that right? If it is, any chance you can describe where the G board is and where diodes 6116 and 6301 are on the board? Any help would be great! Thanks.

How much does a D board cost for a sony vegaKV-34XBR910? It was blinking 7 times and now the repair center wants $500 for this part. Is this too much?

I Have A Sony Bravia kdfe50a12u Which Comes On For About 20Secs Then Goes Into Standby Mode And Blinks 4 times Does Anybody Know What Is Wrong With It?

I have a Sony Trinitron KV-32HS510. My 3 year old was pushing the power button continually and now it won't turn on. The standby light blinks 7 times when I turn tv on, but does not power up. I'm trying to determine if it's worth fixing. Any advise is much appreciated.

I have a Sony KV-27FS100L with 4 blinking lights. I read the bad news above. I bought it in 2004. What do you think the local repair shop is going to charge me to fix it. It's pretty consistant. 4 blinking lights every time it's pluged in. Anything I can do to fix it myself? I'm pretty handy. Thanks much and would really appreciate your expert advice.

diagnostic screen i only have a channel up or down button there is no channel only button

Please send me the instructions on how to solder the 4 capacitor's. I have a Mitsubushi Medallion HDTV 1080 that the circuit breaker blew and now the TV wont come on and all I get is the green blinking light that will not re-set.

I have a Sony 50in LCD Projection TV Model# KDF-E50A10. I have had it for 4 years with no problems. Now when I turn it on it is fine for about 1-2 minutes and then it shuts off. The power/standby light flashes green 45 times in a row then the TV powers back on for 1-2 minutes and shuts off again. It just does this over and over. I can't find anything on the internet about one blinking that many times. I have seen people post in various places basically the same problem, but no one seems to either reply or know whats going on.

Any thing you could tell me would be much appreciated. Thanks

5/11/2010 UPDATE: Sorry for waiting so long to post the results, but all I did was replace the lamp (Sony XL-2400...I think that was the right part number) and the TV was like new again. I had to adjust the brightness back to default levels. I had turned it up so far over the years trying to make up for the slowly darker picture. It's 5 years old and looks like any brand new TV at store.

Replacing the lamp was the easiest thing that I have ever done. You would have to be a complete goof ball not to be able to do it. It took me longer to get the new lamp out of the box then it did to take out the old one and replace it with the new one. I'm actually pissed that I let the TV sit for 3-4 months without doing anything to it in fear of what the cost would be. I bought mine from Amazon.com. I ordered it at like 7:30 at night, payed the extra $12-15.00 for overnight shipping, received it around noon the next day. All together I think it cost me about $150-160.

when pressing power , standby blinks 9 times and cycles continuous . had g-board tested , it's fine . self diagnosis test reads 2:+B ocp 0 , 3:+B ovp 0 , 4:V stop 0 , 5:AKB 0 , 6:LOW B 0 , 7:H-STOP 0, 8:Audio 0 , 9:ZCD 255 , 10:HVPROT 0 , 101:WDT , Sony kp-51ws520 , serial 8056522 , model 90804900 . Thinking of having a repair man come out , but i'm handy , any ideas or solutions ? THANKS TED

HI , I HAVE A SONY KDF-50E2010, after 1min 44sec the TV will go on secure mode, and I have 3 blinks, can anyone help me with this issue ??? I read the comments and I was looking for the T603 and R672 they do not exist. Thanks

I Have a Sony KF-50BR800 that is blinking a code 5. When you turn it on you see pic for about 30 sec than it shuts off and about 30 sec later turns back on. We have had the light checked and its turn on and stays on outside of the TV. But the Man said he could not test it under a load. I just need a little guidance on where to look next. Please help me I really want my TV back.

my 50 inch just flashes untill i turn it off i lost my book so i cant look it up. everything is fine the green light comes on but just ticks over for ages the fan is working but just ticks over to 2 red lights i dunno what to do. please help

I have a kdl-32xbr4. There is no picture or sound. The status led(red) blinks twice when I try to turn it on. Help needed

Hello,
I have a sony trinitron model KV-35S42.
It was working great then next morning no power. when I turn it on it has no power, the standby light doesn't come on.
Is this a fuse problem?
Any help would be great.

I have a Sony KDF-60XBR950 that blinks 3 times when we turn it on and goes into standby and won't come on. I contacted Sony and they said reset power, didn't help, then plug into a different outlet, didn't help, and then finally said it was the lamp cover wasn't on securely, but I've taken it off and put it back on and it's not working. Unless I'm wrong about what the cover is. Can anyone help?

Sony's are extremely tricky with their lamp doors, if you have a heat gun try taking out your lamp door and heating it up enough so its slightly pliable. Once done insert back into the tv, I caution you not to over heat it. This can cause warping but the issue a lot of times with lamp doors is that it's not a 100% seated properly, after you've heated up enough push in very FIRMLY. Hope this works for you, I have done this to about 5 to 6 tvs with 100% success

Thanks I'm going to try that now, will post what happens.

spoutnik, I have the same thing 3 blinks and when I looked up the code it says b+ something ovp over voltage problems and the t603 n r672 things u mentioned I could not find out what they were or anything about them for a long time and then (not confirmed) heard they were fuses but Sony told me first to try the unplugging and moving to another outlet n resetting power but finally said that it was my lamp cover not being secure. I took it out and then put it back and it didnt work but u can read the comment I got on here to take it out n trying getting it warm enough to make it slightly plyable and put it in tightly . I haven't done it yet but am about to. I will post what happens, but just thought I let u know since our problems seemed very similar.

Have a sony KP-51WS520. As of yesterday, I have no picture but sound when I turn the tv on. It stays on with audio for approx 15 seconds then shuts off. The standby light blinks 10 times without fail. I have tried a number of solutions including an attempt to reboot it using display, channel, 5, volume minus then power. Had same problem 2 months ago but addressed problem using the solution above. Now, to no avail. Thoughts anyone? Desperate not to miss NCAAs.

itz boogz, thank u so much, my tv is on!!!! I didn't have to heat it up but it definaltly wasnt snapped into place. I appreciate it very much.
