Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

Hello Mr. Dillon

I have a 10 Blink Problem with my Sony KP-FX432M91.

We bought it in singapore and now we live in germany. In singapore it runs normally. After the shipping we got the problem. Sometimes we have normal function - after a few days we got the 10 blink prob.

I read your advice for the 10 blink fault - but i don't know were is the D-Platine etc.

Could You help me.

Here is my Email-Adress:

Thanks for your help

The  part numbers do not match the service manual that are given in the code responses. Can these be updated?

Hi!

Hi!
Our KDL-40S2000 just went out the other night and the standby blinks 4 times-pauses and blinks again. We downloaded the service manual however it only talks about the power led blinking and that would be the bulb. Other sites talk about the inverter needing to be replaced. We found one for $150 just not sure it will be an easy install and I don't want to buy it only to find it's something else! Please help-any info is greatly appreciated!

I am still hopefully waiting for an answer to my inquriy about the part numbers in this article not matching what is in my service manual that I also downloaded to this site kv-36xbr 800

If you read the article specifically about the 3 blink code, it gives reference to discrete components that should be checked. I stated in past entries that these part numbers do not match the service manual. You said if I download the manual, which I did, you would try and reconcile the differences. This is for the KV36xbr800.

Ok well i know my Problem is

Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672

HOW DO I FIX IT?

my kv-32h510 blinks six times
how do i fix it

Thanks for your article. I have a Sony KV-36HS420, it works great, but sometimes it shutsdown itself, I've noticed it happens when there's a fade out/in from black to a bright color. When it shuts down it blinks 6 or 7 times, I've turned on the TV with Display + 5 + vol- + power and it displays a "1" next to LOWB and HSTOP. I've read that it might be the IC6505, I have the service manual, I can order the necessary parts and have someone replace them, but I want to be sure.

In advance many thanks.

Hello, I have a KP51Ws510 and it is blinking eight times. I am really Ok at repair if I can see the issue. I have tried to read through and found similar threads. No real answers? I know it is the possibility of three different parts. Are these hard for the novice or should I call someone? Thanks!

i have a sony kf-60we610 today i was watching tv and all of a sudden in went black with no sound... light was green in the front until i tried to shut it off then turn it back on... then it just blinks 121 times red then shuts down. the light that flashes red reads lamp on the bottom...
can it be the lamp? picture was perfect just a short wile ago?
i will appreciate your input. thank you

I posted a comment multiple times and still haven't gotten an answer about the part numbers not matching what is being posted for the code of three blinks. My last post was on the 25th of June. I see that an Eric Mingle posted the same issue, and again the wrong part numbers are given that need to be checked. Why isn't this being addressed?!

Sorry I do not have you TV model number manual! but if the red lamp is on usually that is a bad lamp

Larry Dillon, thank you for your response.

Larry,

I have a Sony KP51WS500 that I've been having trouble with for about two weeks now. I'm not technically inclined so I may be way out of my league perhaps. However, after reading through several email threads I have determined that one of my problems is a convergence issue. The second issue is one of 4 blink code, visible only once when the unit is powered on.

The image, up until about an hour ago, met the bowtie convergence description, where the center is clear and the top, bottom, left and right edges curved toward the center with split images. Now, the image is not bowtie, but rather a box, where only the left and right edges (vertically) have the split images.
We don't have any trouble powering the unit on/off or navigating through the various functions...just the image issue.

What are my remedies short of having it corrected at a service center? I want to be certain that there isn't anything else that I (with limited technical know-how) can do to correct these issues. Lastly, should my only recourse be a service center fix, what is a cost range for this type of repair?

I can be contacted at [email protected]

Thanks,

dh

Sorry the 6 OR 7 blinks(Count The Blinks!!!!!!!!) does not tell me anything are you sure it is not 9 blinks??? if so a common and easy fix
Larry

i have a sony Wega 50in plasma , i turn it on , and it give me four blink on standby LED lite until i turn the tv off, can anyone help with this, or how to fix the problem, and what part do i need to buy , any help will appreciated
thank you , my email [email protected]

have you checked the bulb yet??? maybe try unplugging for a few hours and try it again!!???

I am still waiting for a reply from Larry Dillon in regards to my initial question about the part numbers listed in the "Understanding Sony Blink codes".
I posted the question that the part numbers given for the "3 Blink" codes do not match p/n's in the service manual. I downloaded the manual for the KV 36XBR800 as requested. I saw recently another person posted the same problem. I am trying to figure out what the p/n T603 and R672 part numbers are in the Sony manual. My last post was July 1st.

I Have a sony KV-HX32 M31.It would attempt to start have audio but when the picture would try to start it would turn off. The red light on the front is blinking 10 times then pausing. After about half an hour i tried it and it worked and continues to work but the light still flashes 10 times even though it is working. Does it just need reseting or is the fault still there?

Hello. I have Sony KDFE55A20.The red light blinks 6 times. What does it mean to check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206. Is it the problem only technician can fix or can I try? Thank you.

Natalia

i am doing a jvc AV29SX1EK TV WHICH WAS HAVING A HORZONTIAL PROBLEM,AFTER CHANGING THE H Transistor and it comes on it now have problem with the tube base where there is voltage leakage from the screen cable that comes from the flyback.when i remove it from the tube base it stop but as i solder it to the base it start cause problems with heavy noise. i need some assistance inthis problem, this is my first time of come acroos this problem

I get 6 blinks, does anybody have a schematic so i can fin C515 & C516, also IC 206. would like to get tv working. Red convergence goes up and down but not horizontally. Blue goes up and down and left to right. I almost have this one working. I fixed a Phillips 60" hdtv for my other brother. It's been about 2 or 3 months and it works great and was easy to fix.
What about 4.7 ohm resistors, should all be replaced?

Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505

How do I fix this? Is there a manuel?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Hey i have a Sony Trinitron model KV 32hs510

im getting 5 red blinks and then a pause with 6 blinks on the standby light? can anyone help me out on it? it turns on and then off by it self but every once and i while i was able to turn it on...but when it turned off (which it did on accidents lol)but after it would be like 5 or 6 days before i could turn it back on...Pleaseee help me out i would really appreciate it

When I turn on the TV the picture comes on for about 30sec. to 1 min. then the picture goes off and the standby light(green) flashes continuously for approx. 30sec and then the pictures comes back for 30sec. to 1 min. and the pattern starts over. thanks for any help available.

I have a kf-50xbr800 and I turned down the voltage on the driver board; then my set started working properly

what does te picture look like?

I think you are asking me (ron) the picture isn't bad at all have a little bit of light blue ghosting to the left

My Sony Bravia KDL52W3000 is blinking 13 times with a pause in between.
It is less than two years old.

What is this going to cost? This is a common flaw and should be a recall!

like it is 3D but one color 3D?
Larry D

No the TV will not turn on, and the standby light blinks. I think I was hit by lightning.

most likely the power supply board depends on the model number you have????
Larry D

Sony KV-32FS13. Heard a pop, then several horizontal lines about 1/2 inch apart at the top of the screen. It blacked out, then shut off. Standby shows 4 blinks. When I turn it on, it sounds like it is coming up, but then powers down again.

This site indicates the problem to be: No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505.

What should I anticipate for repair costs or parts costs, as I would like to repair it myself if the costs aren't too significant.

most likely sounds like the vertical output IC502(TDA8172) also maybe the voltage feed resistor from the vertical output IC to the fly-back transformer. (R550/.47 ohm @ 1 watt these are the problem with this set most of the time!!!!
Larry Dillon

My Sony KF-60W610 would not turn on it takes a couple of tries did this for a week now will not turn on at all the red dot blimks six times can you help me?

you need to check the solder connections on the horizontal driver transformer most of the time it is T501 for bad solder connections this is a common fault with a lot of Sony TV sets for intermittent start up

Just a little more info I have owned this TV since new 2003 and have not had one problem. Thanks for the help

Just a little more info I have owned this TV since new 2003 and have not had one problem. Thanks for the help
sorry don not understand the question?? think you forgot to ask the question??
Larry D

Sorry. the picture also seems a little faded the past couple of months before this problem happened, when the TV is back on is their something I can clean the (cannons, bulbs, replace blubs) to help picture quality. And can I put better blubs than the ones offered by Sony (is their such a thing). Thank you again The last post I was just giving more info about TV that I left out.

best thing to do is to clean the mirrors/lens every few years but every few months if there is a smoker in the home.
Good Luck

i have a kv-32fs12 that i am(was) using as a computer monitor.
i was adjusting the size of the edges in service mode (and eventually started playing, making the screen smaller)

i made the screen about half the size of the crt tube and then the next setting was interlace (options 1,2,3)
i moved the option to 3 and noticed the interlaced looked terrible and was going to put the option back down but the television shut off.

i thought 'no big deal.. i'll unplug the tv and plug it back in to reset any settings not saved to the rom'

well i unplugged and plugged the television back in and now the television refuses to turn on.

when the television is 'on' (no video) the red light is steady and the bulb goes out twice, repeating.
and when the television is 'off' the red light is steady off and blinks 4 times

a lot of places offering service menu support said that anything not saved into the rom will be reverted back to the prior settings by simply unplugging the tv and plugging it back in.

how come my television isnt doing that?

i tried to turn the television back on in service mode and doing an 8 + enter sequence to reset the service menu values (that didnt work).

is there anything i can do instead of taking this television back to my storage unit until i can afford to take it to a repair shop. (the money wont come along for 8-9 months)

i have broblem on my sony tv only black screen but volium and menu display ok no picture sound ok

i have problem on my sony tv no picture menu display ok sound ok pls help solve this problem

Larry
I have a Sony KP-51HW40 and the set doesn't come on at all it blinks six times.
So that is telling me I have no H sweep I think.
Witch board do I look at.
If I can't repair at the board level is the board still available.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

Its like 3d reply; yes and Ive tried the setup settings and not one is better than what was there originally. I think I now have to go into the setup screen to adjust. Am now looking for the procedure to do it. They say one wrong setting can destroy the bios.

I have a SONY KDL40V2500. It has gone in standby mode and the red light is blinking 4 times.

My online research suggests that the back light inverter needs to be replaced. If this is correct, then how difficult or easy is it to do this. Can I do it myself. Any recommendation

My Sony Bravia set blinks 13 times and then a pause and then 13 times. How unlucky does this mean I am?

I have a Sony kdp-65ws550. The red timer/stand-by light flashes 10 times. I have audio only, no video. According to the service manual, it states:
- Q8014 or Q8013 have shorted replace along with R8051 on D Board
- IC8005 is damaged (D Board)

However in another thread and this thread, Larry Dillion and ARINC429 stated that the problem (a common one) is IC 8002, IC Part No. MCZ3001DB in D BOARD. I am confused. Replacing IC8005 worked for ARINC429. Which part should I replace???

I apologize to Larry and ARINC in advance if I mis-identified and mis-quoted you. Thanks.

My sony kp46w520 is blinking 10 ten times and wont come on. You may here sound for a moment and then it goes out. If I leave it off for about a week then it may turn on, but I cant turn it off or else ill be back at square 1. you wouldnt happen to have the service manual for this model would you?
