Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

Go to the home page here and click on the resources tab bad then go to the technician's corner and look through the upload for that manual.

I have a sony kp-46wt510 with eight blinking lights...i guess i am suppose to

does anyone have any idea how i do this?

I need to troubleshoot my sony kp-45wt510 for eight blinking lights...are there any manuals out there for this model?

***UPDATE***
I reset the TV alot of times (too many to remember) and to my surprize it started working fine again!!!... hope it doesn't act up again =)

Soooo guess what??? It's doing it again!... i looked and looked for 11 blink code, and can't find an answear (I'm not crazzy, i counted 11 many times) is there anything i should do or check before calling a tech?

Any info will be a bless!!!

Hi Larry, the model number is KV-X2101D. It does not blink the self diagnosis blinking code at all.The red light only blinks once each time I press any button on the TV.

I have another Sony Trinitron TV Model number KV-21R1D.If I press the power button ,the Red light turns on for about 8 seconds, after that it off and , starts to blink for 6 times,.I have checked the C515 and C516 and the jungle IC, IC206 on the board but I could not find them on the electronic circuit board of the TV.Kindly tell me what to do about this ,or where exactly these components are on the electronic circuit of this model of my TV,KV-21R1D.Or what exactly should I do.

how did you check them if you could not find them? I do not have that manual but you can download one from here
http://www.servicemanuals.net/ServiceManual/AllBrands/+KV+21R1D/pos1/res...

There is no such thing as a "channel" button. There simply isnt. It's not on my remote, and I've never seen it on a remote before. I'm getting a 2 blink message, and while this site helped me understand that there's a problem, it doesn't tell me how to fix it. So, basically, completely useless website. Did you get a service manual yet????You will need that to see how the set comes apart or the service menu procedure

Useless? LOL We cannot train you in electronics or TV repair there are however some common problems That are easy to explain on what to fix and replace but all problems we cannot as it takes a certain amount of repair and soldering experience and we cannot jump through the screen for you and take you by hand and tell you exactly what your problem is , what type and model of set do you have and describe what the set is or is not doing? We are here to try and save you a few bucks, please do not be so condescending!

Hello Larry!

it's me again with the 11 blinking code (on the Sony KDL-40S3000, bought in the USA), any word on that?... the TV started working again, but I'm afraid it would do the same thing soon (since it has done it before a couple of times)

for what i have read it's based on the WAX3 frame... don't know if that helps!!!

Thank you for your help,
Cesar

Did you buy a manual yet? AS I cannot help you without one.

I have a service manual for my kv-36xbr800. The set blinks three times and then goes to stand by. A blog I looked at said IC6505 is bad. On the Tech lore it also gave T603 and r672. Neither of these references show up in the component listing. Any one have any idea which these refer to?

please post tne service manual on the technicians corner page go to home page click on the resources tab then the tech corner banner, then look for upload. I will see if I can help you. I cannot guarantee that i can but I will take a looks e

I did not find "upload" Is that suppose to read "create a download". If so, I know where my manual is filed, but I do not know  how to send it to you.

yes that is where to do it at!! Did you upload it?

I cannot find the answer to Mantra's question...my Sony 55 inch, Model #KDF-E55420 is blinking 6 times. I see that means

i have a sony KP-FX432 and have the 10 blinking red light where s the D-board in the set.

i have a sony KP-FX432 and has just started the 10 blinkng red lght and not coming on.dose anyone know where the D-board is in these sets.

it is the main board with the large transformer attached with the thick red wire coming out of it.

I have a Sony Grand Wega rear projection, model KDF-55WF655 purchased in the U.S.A in 2005. It has served me well, however lately it has been giving a black screen and the standby light has been blinking 37 times. I have looked at many posts and no one has complained of that many blinks. Any available help would be greatly appreciated

n0pe! no such blink code.MAYBE convergence IC's?

Member have a problem with my Sony KF-60WE610 the standby light blinks continuously?

Forgive my ignorance, but can you explain what convergence IC's are?

I have a Sony KP-51WS520 bought in 2004, It turns on, the screen turns blue, then it shuts off, and the blinking code is 2. I havent seen anyone have this problem, what now??

sounds like A bad blue picture tube. or the G2 is out of alignment.

Thanks, about how much do you think it will cost to repair?

Anywhere from 85 bucks up to MMMMM I'd have to guesstimate up to 550.00

I have no experince with tv's do you think I could fix this my self?, and I ve been looking for parts with no luck? also I read other post where a guy had a similar problem, he said he tryed to adjust the tube, but there was a dark vertical line, I noticed this on mine right before it shuts off. probably the blue tube is bad? how do I know if anything else is the problem to cause the tube to go? or is this common for a set 5 years old like this one (sony kp-51ws520), Thank you you have been very helpful so far just reading the other post.
K2

Problem started after our child turned the our Sony KV-36FS320 on and off reapeatedly until it would no longer come on.. Now when turning the tv on it sounds like it is going to come on then goes off again with a three code flash. Is this the over voltage protection board or the power supply?

Hoping to fix this myself- where can i get part numbers and a good site to get parts?

according to my records on this model the A board has a problem.

Hi Guys
I have a Sony 32 inch KV 27TS32 all of a sudden the screen went black but we still had audio. The Timer/Sandby is blinking continuos. The forum says no reply from the jungle IK video path defective. How severe of a problem is this?Is this unit worth trying to have fixed.
Thanks

My Sony KV28CL10U tv is not turning on. I can hear the sound ok, but the picture is not coming. In addition the power light is blinking 5 times. I can see from your post above that its a problem with AKB circuit. Can you tell me approximate cost of replacing this circuit? I live in London, United Kingdom.

Unfortunately, I do not have any access to any foreign service manuals as these sets are a lot different in design so I cannot help you with this one. Not only is the power supply way different, so is the color/video circuitry Good luck

I have a sony tv and it turns on then off right after.
Anyone know how to help?

I think my service manual  download finally worked today. This is the issue I am trying to resolve. THe part numbers given here do not match the manual. The IC 6505 does.

hey my sony tv has a problem we turn it on and it blincks a green light for like 30 seconds and then it turns sed but it still hasnt tured of for about an hour so if you can help please the answer up on this page thanks

How many times does it blink?? Were there any symptoms before it quite?? did you notice any problems lately?

I have a Sony KV32566 manufactured in 1999. The screen is black and the timer light is flashing continuously every second. There is sound. A few times, I turned off the television and DishNet work box and the picture came back.

What step should I take? I am not going to be able to open the back and make repairs independently, but would require an expert.
Is it an easy fix and at what cost?
