Video Playback / Recording Devices

I bought a dvd recorder and recorded several vids.

These vids play o k when I play them back on the recorder,  or my other dvd player,  however they won't play as is on my computer.  It says a decoder plugin is reqd.

Videos I rent will play on my computer.

My question is,  why will a dvd rented play with no plugin and the ones I record won't ?

This thing worked Beautifully for about two years and then went into hibernation! All it will do now is blink both of it's Green leds at me. The only time this changes is when I unplug it. I read in one of the other threads about a 1000uF cap that might be the perpatrator, and found one that was very discolored, and also a 470uF one that was somewhat discolored, so I replaced them both. That slowed the "blinking" somewhat but didn't solve the "no start" problem. I REALLY LIKE THIS Receiver, Please help me repair it. THANK YOU ALL.

I have a budget range ALBA DVD RECORDER (RDVD1001XI)

I record 'nice' programmes that I can watch at night but recently the picture has been breaking up after about ten minutes of playing.  It sort of goes slowly, then judders for a few minutes.  It will then play okay for a little while, but gradually get worse and worse until it is unwatchable.
