I replaced the A board in my KLV-40U100M Bravia a few weeks ago. It has been working fine ever since.
The problem I had was intermittent power off, then back on..until it finally died completely.
I paid @ $240 for the board direct from Sony...
If you plan on keeping the TV and don't want to gamble with used boards on Ebay...I would just go for a new board. I do believe Sony lost a lot of business over this one. They should have recalled the unit knowing it had a high failure rate..or maybe just sell the board at a reasonable price since the TV only lasted 15 months and it wasn't cheap.
Good luck

You paid $240?  This is after the core charge was reimbursed right?  It looks like the one at SONY was $500+.  Then you would get a $290 reimbursement bringing you to about $217.  IS that right?  And does SONY warranty the part they sell you?

I have just bought a Lg Dvd

I have just bought a Lg Dvd Recorde model DRT389H, i have conected to a Sony Bravia tv model KDL40P5500, When Dvd is switched on the picture will go off and on, sometimes straight way sometimes after 10 mins and somtimes after longer.

I bought two of these two

I bought two of these two years ago. One at home gets used 2 hours a week, the other is at the office and gets used about 20 hours a week. Both did the off for 30 seconds then back on. Two weeks ago the one at home no longer turns on. Yesterday the one at work decided not to turn on. The Sony home service want $130 to come and give a quote for both. My fear is that the replacement board is the same design and I will be doing the same repair in another year or two. Anyone compared the new and original boards for differences?

Thanks

joed
No, I did not get any core

No, I did not get any core reimbursement..I paid @240 for the board...
and,
I don't think they warranty any electronic components.
I hope they reworked the board and remover any high failure components..come on, it's SONY right.
Anyway, the TV has been working fine ever since..

I am sure that Sony will not

I am sure that Sony will not replace any boards while in the home as items like that are usually brought back to the repair shop to be diagnosed and repaired. in the home but-if they did the new board would have been improved if there was a problem or a defect in the replacement board.

I found what appears to be a

I found what appears to be a manufacturing defect on my A board, but I am curious if anyone else has seen something similar with theirs? The diode appears to be mounted improperly. I may try to re-solder (I have already ordered another board). If my other TV has the same issue, I will post that as well.

Update: based on the schematic, this configuration may also work, but the sloppy soldering is very close to the other zenier.

Larry Dillon
mmm very interesting but

mmm very interesting but sloppy work. looks like the board was made in china or Mexico?????????
Larry Dillon probably a china made board.

any one else ever see this

any one else ever see this board made and put thru like this???

The Diode is at that angle on

The Diode is at that angle on my board as well - but appropriately soldered.

The only major difference I saw between the original and the replacement was newer firmware.

New A-board arrived today and

New A-board arrived today and one Sony is back working. Also, the crooked diode is no longer crooked on this new board. Next step will be to take apart the other unit and hopefully it is the same fix. I do want to watch the current one for a while just to verify the random power off and on has been fixed.

Larry Dillon
was it a new board or did you

was it a new board or did you have it rebuilt????

I have the same problem with

I have the same problem with my Sony KLV40U100M Bravia LCD. The on/off issue happened spuradically for about three months with no common time, length TV on, number of times consecutive, etc. I actually had my DENON receiver repaired thinking this was the problem. Not so.

Now the TV won't turn back on and is dead.
Looking for the 178946521

The fix was with the new board.  I did re-solder and re-orient the crooked diode with no result.  I figure the damage was done.

Larry Dillon
you could have replaced both

you could have replaced both diodes like I suggested !!??

Larry,

Larry,
I appreciate your comments on this post and trying to help people but I just ordered the diodes and now find out they are not on this TV. I replied to your email but no response.

If you are going to help then do so, don't make things worse.

Unfortunately, there is no

Unfortunately, there is no fix other than replacing the "a" board. You have to buy it through Sony's parts warehouse in Ft. Myers, FL but cannot pick one up. It is ~ $ 240 shipped. If you have a service tech do it add another $ 170 or so. There is NO WARRANTY.
The new board DOES have some design changes (as noted in earlier posts) but that doesn't mean SONY will do anything about it!!

You just have to live with the intermittent shut off's for a month or so until it goes out.
I have complained to Sony (even to high levels) and their response is "there are no known problems with this model or the series of TV's. If there was we would recall the product or offer an extended warranty." When asked how many products SONY has done this for, they don't know. Finally a supervisor admitted "we have only offered an extended warranty on one product that had a known defect." I think it was a sports walkman or something like 20 yrs ago.

In other words, you bought our bad design and/or manufacturing process. We don't stand behind our products and it is $500 w/ no warranty to fix...buy a new one!

It is interesting how many people have this same problem.
I looked up my other 6 HDTV's from Panasonic (32" LCD and 50" plasma), JVC (61" Lycos), Toshiba (40" LCd), Sharp (52" LED) and Samsung (23" monitor) and none have had any posts or issues.

However, I have had issues in the last few years w/ a SONY Playstation 3, HD radio tuner, camera, ES home theater receiver AND this TV. Therefore I will NEVER buy Sony again.

My suggestion is to put your money towards a Sharp LED LCD now or wait for the 2010 LG or Panasonic Plasma that use 1/3 the power of the old ones yet are brighter and definitely clearer.

As a side note, I had weird problems with two DENON AVR 1908 and 1708 receivers bought 3 years ago b/c they were the first to offer HDMI 1.3 BOTH have gone bad in the third year (after warranty) by getting very staticy and then loosing all sound (unless in pure direct mode) and need a $200 repair for capacitors, and a jumper added to fix. Denon USA will not stand behind these receiver either even though they are well protected w/ APC and GE whole house surge protectors and power conditioners that are all still working fine.
Yet Denon will try to convince you it must be a "lightning strike" or some type of power surge.
I have them though b/c they are in different houses in FL and OH, have high quality wiring to high end Polk and KEF 7.1 speakers and nothing else in either house has a problem including two Marantz receivers (same parent Co) a Harman Kardon and three ONKYO's to the same Polk and different Klipsch surround sound systems.
If someone else has these same Denon issues, please let me know.

Personally I think the Sony

Personally I think the Sony line is C.R.A.P.
I recently purchased a Sony Bravia KDL-42V4100 and just after the warranty expired the TV started to reset itself. After some research online I noticed there may be a problem with the Power Supply board on the unit.
I have called into Sony for thier advice as well, however, be that as it may, I certainly feel that a previously 'trusted' name brand has become tarnished in my eyes as I certainly do not feel like fixing / purchasing a new TV ever few years.

I will get this system fixed.., but I am going to get rid of it PDQ and get something more reliable from another manufacturer !!!

Larry Dillon
most manufacturers are like

most manufacturers are like that as the technology is new and all the bugs have not been worked out yet that is why I have not purchased a new flat-screen as my older RCA crt based 32" has been working trouble free now foe almost ten years , one day I might shell out a few grand for the led type projection as no light bulb to chance ever!!!! but I will also include in the purchase price an extended warranty no ifs or butts!!!!!!

I have KLV-40U100M also, and

I have KLV-40U100M also, and the following is my problem:

Go to the other end of CN19--that's your Power ON command from the micro. Press the power button while monitoring CN 19 Pin 1, it should change to 5 volts when the power button is depressed. If it does not, then replace the A Board

My question is what could be bad on the A board to cause this, I hate to replace entire board. If its something I can fix. I don't see any bad solder joints or burnt spots.
