Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

OK ThanX, this is the right forum, from the starting post it says

"Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board"

If some one can verify that this has worked for them and any hints/tips they came across, I will order the bits and have a go...

hi, I have a sony trinitron, model KV24LS35U. was working fine but now stanndby light blinks 11 times. Is it worth getting fixed or scrap it? many thanks Dan

I have a Sony KDF-55xs955 rear projection LCD purchased in Nov. 2006 that will not power on and the green LED is blinking 6 times.  We had a service technician come out to take a look and immediately said the issue was a $450 power supply without even touching the TV.  I have now looked at a couple of forums that say 6 blinks = No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, which doesn't sound much like a power supply to me.  Is the tech trying to rip me off?  Is there a way to know what it should cost me?

hey i was reading this blog and i was trying to see who cld help me...my tv is blinking 7xs and now im stuck...idk what to do so if anyone can help i wld really appreciate that thanks :0)

my tv is blinking 7xs and idk where to go from here so if someone cld help me i wld appreciate that

i have a sony trinitron model kV28HX1SU and we have no picture or sound and the stand by button is blinking permanently.

I have a 54 inch Sony Wega that turns on for a while then it will lose picture and sound both. It will stay off for about 45 seconds and come back on and play for a while and repeat this again and again. What is this problem and estimate for repairs? TV is 3 years old.

My Sony Trinitron, FD Trinitron Vega Chassis #DA4, Serial #KV32HS510 worked great yesterday, beautiful picture, is not turning on today. For a few days I had to try the power button 2 or 3 times, but it did come on. Now I get 6 blinks. If I do take it to a repair shop, what are the chances of them fixing it? I do have a friend who may be able to check it out too. What are my chances? The TV is no more that 4 or 5 years old.

Thanks!

Can anyone tell me what I am supposed to do when it doesn't turn on and when the standby light doesn't blink at all?

I have a Sony KDF-42WE655 that is producing blinking code 5. I follow the thread for reading the detailed error codes and putting it in service mode but I don't get the result i think is expected. When I use Display, 5, - volume, On button for screen test or Display, 5, + volume, On button to put it in service mode I still get no display. Is there another way to interrogate the error conditions with error code 5 when the display still does not work? What would you suggest is a best next step?

Thanks

Hi, My Sony Wega KV-HX32 started blinking red 10 times after my son & wife pressed the power on button at the same time 2 different remotes.
I get sound and no picture for 5 seconds before it powers off. Since it has no screen, I can't get into diag mode. This TV weighs 75kg so I won't be taking it to a shop. Do they cost heaps to fix. Been a good tv, only about 4-5 years old. I expect a better life for such an expensive TV.

Reply for 10 Blinks, HV PORT
I have not seen the wiring diagram of your TV KV-HX32, But in my case It was IC8002, It is a driver/Oscillator Ic. Sony asked 300 dollars to fix my projection TV kp-fx432M91.I decided to fix it myself on throw away basis, could not get much help for 10 blinks from Net.However, this post gave me lot of hope and initative. Bought Service Manual from net then few parts and finally above mentioned IC fixed the problem. Pls look for IC Part No. MCZ3001DB in D board, You will find two IC of same part number but look for the IC driving Two FETs of High Voltage Power supply section.
In most wiring diagram of Sony TV High Voltage Power Supply section components starts with 80--. as Q8013, Q8014, R8051 and IC 8002 are the essential components for HV section and these must be checked/replaced.
These all components cost only 12 Dollars in Middle East and 30 Dollars in USA and Sony may ask u minimum 250 dollars to fix 10 blinking problem. Pls do one thing search Service manual of your TV on net and route the link to me.
Thanks Techlore.

I have a sony trinitron model kv-32hs510 with 7 blinks. after 7 blinks, it stops for 4 seconds and repeats the blinks. i turned it off about a couple months ago and it won't turn on again. i tried unplugging it 60 seconds, overnight etc, it doesn't work. it happened once before but picture/sound came back after a week by itself. this time it's been over 2 months and we're still waiting:)...is there a way to fix it ourselves?

Was an answer ever found to Confused in Sac's issue - we are having the EXACT same problem and I can't seem to find a local SONY authorized rep. Would like info if it's available.

No, it is not fixed, yet anyway.   I have been jumping thru hoops to try to get my hands on the schematics for this TV without paying too much.  I thought Agoroquest could help with that, but so far, I cannot find them.  I will l post if it ever gets fixed.  Please do the same.  Thanx.

Does anyone know how I can get these schematics??

Hi Rags,

I had same problem my TV. Replaced IC8002 on the 'D' board.

This is what we did:

1.Bought 2 x MCZ3001D from WES components in Ashfield Sydney Australia for $11.20 (each).

2.Friend had an 18 pin machine spun socket (not the crappy ones on EBAY).

3.Took back off TV

4.Put the 'D' board in service position

5.Noted which way IC8002 chip sat (Where position 1 is), also noted which 2 legs are not soldered.

6.Cut the black plastic that was covering this chip underneath
(where D board screws into) as this is easier than removing the 'D'
board.

7.De-soldered the IC8002 chip with a proper de-soldering iron. These are expensive though.

8.Soldered in the 18 pin socket.

9. Set the chip into the socket.

10.Tested TV, worked fine.

11. Put it all back together, plugged in Tivo, DVD etc etc etc and all bloody good stuff.

12. I now also have a spare MCZ3001D which is taped to the back of
the TV for future replacement, which is now easier since its now in a
socket.

smart thinking! Most of the time when I replace an IC on A printed circuit boaed I ussally install an socket as if the ICfails or needs replacement in the future it is hard on the delicate printed vcircuit landindinds as it is very easy to overheat them and then they will tear off very easy then you have a verydifficult time repairing the circuit board with hard wiring.

Hey Oranom,

Thanks for the advise and great instructions.  it looks complex, therefore i will have to hire pro help.  Someone came, took a look and said the transformer, which would cost £250GBP.  i can get a new samsung for £500, 40".  all this 18 pin socket is confussing.  got any pics.  How much do you think a pro should charge?? and how long a job??

 thanking u in advance

I have a series of blinking codes appearing on my Sony Triniron screen. The picture is still working in the background and the sound is not effected, it still funtions normally. One of the codes reads: 00898288 (EFE8), another is: 00893328 (EEEE) Any idea what these codes mean?

Thanks,

JLP

They blink continually every three seconds in a black rectangular box that covers the bottom half of the TV screen.
