rgwaters, are you 100% sure

rgwaters, are you 100% sure fluid from the CRTs did not leak out? This is so common on this TV set. This set is also common for bad capacitors. They will usually swell and you can see them bad. this set is not one that someone should be inside of without some electronic training on how the circuits work. you will need to get a service manual for this set as it sounds like a power supply problem. it coulkd be in the main supply but I am quessing it is in the sweep power supply. if you have no manual or do not have the ability to read a schematic and follow the circuit flow, please play it safe and for the good of your poor sick TV set and call in a pro to assist you in this repair. good luck and let us know how this repair turns out for you.

My wall recepticle is fine--everything else works, just the TV is completely dead. The remote won't turn it on and the main power button will not either. What could have happened and what can I do? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Did you ever find the answer to this problem? I am having the same one ...driving me nuts!

Thanks for the advice.  I ended up having a tech visit my home, and such began the nightmare.  Sparing the details of an unsavory repair tech, the TV was repaired within three weeks, as he said he replaced a couple video processing units (behind the rear inputs), without replacing what the tech said would be very costly, a processer that could cost upwards of $200.00.

So the tv is fixed which is nice, but after trying to charge me more than 30% more than the quoted price, I offered him the original agreed upon fee and he left in a huff.  It took my 5 days of phoning him just to get him to return to my house to re-install the "guts" that he removed.  All in all, cost me $375.00 total and I'm happy that the TV at least works.

However, it seems now as though the picture in the corners of the screen are not as focused as the picture towards the center of the screen.  The sharpness of the picture seems to have been lost a bit.  Is this a fixable problem (other than navigating through the video menus and tweaking) or is it potentially a result of the replacement or failing of potential processing units?  Just curious if anyone has any ideas.  Thanks again for all the help.

Probably just needs a good

Probably just needs a good adjustment and the tech should have done that when he was in the home as that is part of the service labor.  Sounds like you need some convergence, and focus adjustments.  Also probsbly needs a cleaning inside the set where the mirrors and the lens are.  Good Luck  Let us know if you managed to get him back out to your home again.

My first mistake was probably that I hired a tech that works out of his home, instead of trying to find one that worked for an established business.  I live in a rural area, so having servicepersons actually come to my home is often difficult.  Is it possible that I could tweak these settings myself and probably come to a satisfactory result?  I know that there are knobs beneath the screen hidden behind the front face where the TV speakers are located.  Would those be the knobs to focus on?  Is there any dummy fixes I can play with by opening it back up? (which I realize isn't recommended, but it's a lot of fun pretending that I know what I'm doing)

My assumption is after he tried to charge me more than the quoted price, and I insisted that I wasn' t paying an increase, especially after his lack of consistency, that he won't be returning to my home in any case.  So any hints here would be a huge help.  Thanks again for taking the time to review this.

They reset it by unplugging it waht a few minutes before pluggong back in. Actually there is no fix for your set. A series of event internal to set and signal coming in cause it to loose sound "resetting it is temorary fix"

Technician told him the High Voltage Unit needs to be replaced.  The High Voltage kit cost $380 and the labor nearly as much.  Can anyone tell me if I can order the High Voltage kit from Sony ?  I worked as a Computer Technician for many years and have swapped out numerous High Voltage Power supplies in Laser printers and so I am thinking that swapping out a High Voltage Power Supply in a Rear Projection TV might be a good project for me.  Is this a do-able project and as far as difficulty goes from 1 - 10 ? I would appreciate any assistance in this matter.  Thank you !

Dude that labor is too high should be around $195.00 you can get the board from a distributor If I remember right Sony will sell direct to Authorized servicers but maybe even them also through a distributor

If this is an oldser set the power relay is still closed probably the transistor that drives the coils in the relay is shorted if so an easy fix

I have a Sony Rear Proj TV

I have a Sony Rear Proj TV MOdel KP-51WS500. It has almost 4 years. It shows red lines on a redish background. Lately the image has turned blurred and the colors are of bad quality. The repairman took a pieve out of the TV. I don't know the name of it. This piece controls the mix of colors. My question is: Can I buy this part on my own and just ask the technician to put it inside the TV set? The tech is charging me 280 dollars for the part.

Thank you for the advice.

The part you mention could be

The part you mention could be the CRT board, the Y/C video jungle IC or the Video board. When any of these parts are replaced, there is going to be some sort of alighnment involved. without knowing what part the tech tok out is impossiblew to say how much the part cost and if you can replace it or not. If you have no TV repair exoerience, play it safe and let the tech service this TV as there is alot of high voltage inside these puppies even when they are unplugged. Good Luck with this repair and et us know what was wrong with the set and what it took to repair it.

I am a repair technician for

I am a repair technician for many things but not for a television that I recently acquired.

I have a 46"? Sony rear projection tv that has a constant green tint ....no matter how I adjust the picture or color it is still there. I took off the back and cleaned the mirror but I did not touch the three projectors or (whatever you call them)...everything else seems to work fine.

Is there a web site anyone can advise me to visit or is there anything I can do to adjust this tv on my own?

Is there any hope for this tv? :)

thanks

Samsung sp43w6 rear

Samsung sp43w6 rear projection tv ,had some recent trouble with the convergence and had to have a new board installed at a cost of $450.00 which took six week to complete because the tech could not get a proper responce from samsung. After it was returned it still had convergence ajustment problem with all the av channels which I could not access through the users menu and had to call tech out ,he accessed the service menu and said he did his best .......but when we press the perfect focus button the set responds with "check factory data" and ends and all four corners of the picture seem to curve upwards. Tech said need to play a different test pattern to adjust it and it was the best he could do.I need to know how to access the service menue and the default settings so I can have a go at it my self because I can't afford to spend any more on the set.

We are able to watch the tv but when you know there's aproblem you can't help but focus on it.

Coul someone please help?

It tells you in the service

It tells you in the service manual how to reset the perfect focus.  You must have called in a non authorized Samsung repair tech. The response is not good enough, as the best he can do!/  i would call back the shop and tell them that if they cannot fix it correctly, then you want a full refund, and you will then contact a shop that can repair it correctly.  There are laws about shops who do this type of shotty repair work. Complain to the BBB and the consumer affairs as well as the county attorney or even the state attorney.  You will be letting them take your money and continue to work and do shotty workmanship if you do not complain.  Like I said, if you follow the service manual, you can possibly do this your self, IF and only if you have the proper equipment to do these types of alignments.  Also before you make any alignments, write down all of the settings and the values of those settings before you change anything.  Good Luck, and let us know how you make out with this repair.

This thread is in a TV repair

This thread is in a TV repair thread, but that being said, Have you tried to clean the laser lens off yet?  If you have and this did not work, your problem could be the laser assembly or a servo circuit fault or an alignment. These alignments have to be done with special test equipment and gauges. Good Luck, and let us know if you get the unit repaired and what was wrong with it.

I opened it up and found the 6 points in front of it behind the speaker panel that control the focus and color, but that didn't fix my problem. If anyone can help me get my tv back in focus I would greatly appreicate it thank you in advance.

You most likley have bad convergence ic chips those large flat ics that have a STK number on them,

some times there are small resistors or mini fuses that open when those ic's fail too.

The  tvs are much harder to

The  tvs are much harder to fix now days because they have shutdown circuits built in them.you have to do some spot testing with your meter. test the horzonial out put transistor to see if it shorted out if so the high voltage transformer may be bad.

if that tedted ok then you could have a shorted vertical output ic or bad audio output ic.

now these could have backed up and blown your power supply Transistors too.

maybe this gives you a better idea of what is going on with your tv set.

You should not disconnect the hv lead there is 35 kv that a lot of voltage to be playing with.

scope your video transistors and see if you have video check the crt driver transistors see  and if you have 150 volts on the collectors. some times it ends up being a shorted pix tube.

Larry Dillon
i will have to agree with RJ

i will have to agree with RJ on the disconnection of the HV lead and about the difficulty of repairing a TV set these days. It is not as easy as taking out a board and swapping it. There are adjustments and alignments when you replace most boards. I do remember those days of taking out some tubes and going down to the drug store and testing the tubes. Then you would spend a few bucks, buy a few new tubes and most of the time, you would put the tubes back, and if you put them in the correct place, the set would fire up and you were the hero of the household. I can't tell you though, how many times I went out to service an older TV set, and found out someone had replaced the tubes and thought they were all the same things. If they fit, it was good. Those were the days!

When you say flat screen, are you talking of a picture tube set, or a flat panel TV set? And how old is this TV set? Was the set dropped or hit really hard?

I have an Insignia (Best Buy

I have an Insignia (Best Buy Brand) IS-TDHD30 18 mth. old television.   I am having what the serviceman called a "pincushion or bowing" problem.  He said that Best Buy did not have the replacement module and didn't know when it would be available.  I would like to find out who manufactured the tv and or what the name of the replacement part would be (would be great if I could just replace part, rather than the whole module), or find a service manual, something that I could tell a service tech what I need.  I have been unable to find a repair shop that has experience with this brand.  I am leary about just having them come and take it to a shop and then?  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks

Larry Dillon
I would write Best Buys

I would write Best Buys customer service department and complain that they are selling sets that by law, they are suppose to support for three years or replace the TV set. Do not let them fool you. if this does not get you anywhere, call the State Attorneys off and file a complaint. You will get an answer from best buy. they will all of a suddenly come up with a board for your set, or a new TV set. Good Luck.
