Dave Dumps HD DVD

Yep, I’m putting my money where my mouth is - listing my HD DVD player on ebay and updating my Netflix account (above). Toshiba may have purchased a $2.7 million Super Bowl ad spot, but that’s the last gasp of a dead format.

More Bad News For Moxi?

Word on the street: Digeo’s suffering ain’t over yet:

Although I can?t get anything official from Charter, it?s well known that they are now pushing a Motorola DVR instead of the Moxi and that they (most likely) won?t be buying any more Moxis.

The Eye-Fi Has Arrived

The FedEx man just surprised me with my next review item… I’ve been pretty fired up about the Eye-Fi ($99) for awhile now, and I’m looking forward to checking it out. As opposed to owning one of the very few camera models with built-in WiFi, this little guy is hardware-agnostic and should work with any camera that takes SD cards - in this case, 2GB. In addition to wirelessly syncing pics to PC or Mac, the press packet indicates 17 photo sharing sites are also supported. I’m generally pretty slow with reviews, but I’ll try to get something up within two weeks.

Weathering The Writers Strike, Take Six

Moman is fresh out of DVR-ed HD content and wondered what if I (or any ZNF readers) have any suggestions on how his family might weather the remainder of the writers strike.

Where?s Dave?

I’m here. Really. Had a busy week in the office and my MacBook Pro -> MacBook Pro migration took far too long and felt a bit Windows-esque… including an OS reinstall. While the fanboys may want to blame this one on me, I had some serious high-powered former Apple employee assistance and it’s not user error.

Despite my frustrations, I also had my mom pick up a Mac Mini when her Compaq died… this also took some time to configure, though that has more to do with instructing her over the phone (an exercise in patience) followed by tedious tweaking, installs, etc via iChat screen sharing. During the process I decided she’ll be getting her first digital camera soon and if the Eye-Fi passes muster, she’ll be using it.

The Great Port Debate

When Apple announced the MacBook Air I had an immediate reaction to the absence of an Ethernet port. It went something like this, “What, no Ethernet port?”

It’s not that I need an Ethernet port often, but when I do, it’s critical. Take CES. I was in the press room with a limited window of time and a video that needed uploading. I wasn’t going to mess with a wireless connection that had been flaky the last time I’d tried it. I went straight for a wireline, got my 42 megabits uploaded and went on my merry way.
