Television and Home Theater

I have some confusion on the purpose of some of the controls in the service menu of my TV and how to properly set them; my set is a Panasonic PT-47WX49E. The controls in question are the ones in the HDEF and VDEF adjustment section. The service manual states to turn off digital convergence and cover all but the green tubes before making adjustments, why do they have you do this?

When I turned my set on I heard a pop, could smell something electrical and the light blinks red 6 times repeatedly whenever I turned it on after a few seconds of green initially.  I took it to the local Mexican TV repair shop in Playa del Carmen.  I was told that all 4 circuit boards were bad and I should just buy another TV.  I took the back off and I could see that the main power board had been checked because he did not reconnect all the wires.  Is it possible to diagnose the other boards when the main power board is out?  I gather from reading other posts

Hi Larry - you've helped me before with the blinking green light problem, so I thought you could help me with this issue.  I received a new chassis from Mitsu they agreed to do this on all tv's that had the blinking green light problem.  I attempted to reinstall it last night and when I got finished I noticed that the status light was blinking orange.  Do you have any idea what may cause this?  I took the back panels off and went over every connection and I can't seem to find anything wrong.  thanks for your help.
