sony model kp-51ws500 red screen and horizontal lines

Hello all. I'm new to the forum and my problem is: 51'  Sony rear projection screen is washed out in red and gets worse as you watch it. It also has vertical lines arching across the screen. I have been told a couple of things 1. The red tube has shorted out and must be replaced as well as the blue and green tubes, as these will not be as strong with a new red one. I was told to not even bother because the repair would be $1,000 plus. 2. The high voltage overdrive has gone bad and needs replaced. It can be done for a service call of 75.00 plus the cost for the part(s). Any advice or help is greatly appreciated. Thank You.
