Beginner's Guide to TV Repair

Parts and Safety

First off I'm assuming you have a multimeter, if not you can get one for around $15 that will do. A service manual is handy to help you locate some of the components I'll be talking about. Service manuals can ordered from http://www.servicemanuals.net/

Parts can be ordered from Matt Electronics.com or Electronix.com. Call or e-mail them for a free catalog.

Is Free TV Going Away For Good?

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

When HDTV becomes standard, and all the channels change, how do we get ordinary TV over an antenna without exorbitant charges from a cable or DirecTV service?

Sonos Update - it keeps on rocking!

I'm a big Sonos fan.  BIG.  Now granted, I don't really have the $ in the bank to truly afford it, but if I could pick any one home music system to buy, no holds barred, Sonos is it.  If you've never tried it, there's just something 'good' about the way it works.  It's super-easy to use, but it's more than that - it's actually pleasant to use.  For example, when you pick up the Controller (the remote control with LCD screen that lets you select music to play), it has a motion sensor inside to automatically turn on the screen.  Nice touch.

Extended Warranties - Do I Really Need One?

The Purchase

You're in the store, looking at all the shiny new TVs and electronic equipment, comparing, and then finally decide you want to buy the 52” DLP Projection set. On the way to the checkout, the salesman asks, “Would you like the extended warranty with this set?” Not knowing much about this you say, “Do I need it?”

How much is that Robopet doggy in the window?

Robots continue to seem to be appearing everywhere now in my life.  As I was walking past Radio Shack, the little Robopet caught my eye as I walked by.  Thought is was funny that they put the 'doggy' in the window.  I've played with him too, and he is pretty cute.  The kids love him as does my wife who doesn't want to get a 'real' doggy.  It's a good substitute for all.

By the way, you'll also notice that the picture is black and white.  For some reason, my Treo 650 won't take color pictures anymore.  Need to look into why.

What Brand of Head Unit Should You Choose?

Maybe you're at Best Buy...

Maybe you're surfing the internet...

Maybe you're browsing through a Crutchfield magazine...

...all in hopes of finding a head unit that fits you.

I find that the major reason one head unit brand is more expensive than another is: build quality. I am going to be focusing around that, and plan to expand on each brand - right now I have a skeleton.
