Hey, i bought a VGA to S

Hey, i bought a VGA to S-video and RCA cable for my laptop. I was trying to connect my laptop to my CRT tv set. However, nothing i've tried seems to work. I have an Acer Aspire 1350 laptop with windows XP running on it and with a VGA and S-video (7-pin) output. My CRT tv only has a S-video (4-pin) and the RCA (Red, white and yellow) things. I was getting sounds but no pictures whatsoever.

Did i get the wrong cables for the job? If so, what cables should i be getting? Not sure if this is relevant, but my laptop did not recognize my tv when all the cables were connected. I tried Display, Advanced Settings and when i clicked on the monitors pull down tab, i was only given 2 options (both being the same option (i.e. my laptop monitor), if that makes sense). Please help!!!

Did you read all the posts here and search the forums for an answer? I'm sure we've talked about this before?

Can you post a link to the cable you bought? I'm willing to bet that's your problem.

Here's the link http://www

Here's the link http://www.amazon.co.uk/VGA-to-S-Video-RCA-Adaptor/dp/B000P3UB24/ref=sr_...

I have read through all the posts in this thread, but none of it seems to work for me. I have since created a new thread with much more information there, if you're willing to take your time to look through it. I sincerely appreciate the time taken to reply to my post. I am beginning to think that i bought the wrong cables as well...

I have a small noebook EeePC.

I have a small noebook EeePC. Attempted to connect to a monitor via VGA adaptor to Svideo or to RCA. I click for second monitor in advance settings of display. It doesnt do anything? I click the fn and F8 keys and a small Icon pops to middle of screen momentarily that says LCD only. What do I need to do differently?

This is the connector I purchased..

Those "adapter" cables don't work for what you're trying to do. Here, I talk about the famed "VGA to component video cable." which is the same thing you have only with different connectors. http://www.techlore.com/article/10061/How-To-Connect-a-Computer-To-Your-...

You need something that adapts the signal, not just the termination points. I show one of these here: http://www.techlore.com/article/10061/How-To-Connect-a-Computer-To-Your-...

to clarify the cable isnt enough and you are refering to the listings for "converters" that are in the $30 range?

?

I can't vouch for the wireless model, but yes, both look fine. The important thing to note is that these are more than cables that merely make the plugs fit from one to the other. There are electronics here that convert the signal the PC outputs into something your TV's S-video input can understand.

Thank you, I dont suppose

Thank you, I dont suppose they sell those at Wall Mart?

Radio Shack?

Do you have an existing thread about setting up a wireless keyboard and mouse to my notebook as I intend to use them with the TV set up.

I was informed by the original owner of my notebook that he had wireless keyboard and mouse and some are compatible with the notebook and do not need a USB transmitter.

Thank you Matt!

Wal-mart? Maybe online, probably not in store. Radio Shack is probably the same way. Your best bet is Amazon.com, NewEgg, Mwave, or Tiger Direct for a variety of options and good prices.

If the previous owner used a wireless keyboard and mouse without a USB dongle, then it was likely a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. You'll first want to double check that your notebook does indeed have Bluetooth capabilities built in. (Check the control panel and/or in the device manager).

If it does, simply order your keyboard and mouse (you should be able to find these at many local stores, but the best variety will be online at the sites I mentioned), then follow the pairing instructions.

I found this item and notice

I found this item and notice it is USB powered... some of the listings dont specify but look to be the same..

http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-VGA2TV-Computor-Presentation-Converter/d...

Yes my notebook has bluetooth.

In theory I could sit with my blue tooth keypad at the couch/recliner while my notebook is connected to the TV monitor, correct?

Thanks will add to facebook!

Looks like it would work, but can't say anything beyond that since I've never used that specific device. Make sure you read through the user reviews, and if all looks good, give it a whirl. Worst case, it's not a huge loss if it doesn't work.

Your theory is sound, with a BT keyboard and mouse, you can control your PC up to 30 feet away.

Before you dive down this path, though, I should ask you what your intentions are for connecting your PC to your TV. Downscaled quality through S-video isn't that great, and will impact your ability to do certain things.

I like to watch Youtube

I like to watch Youtube videos, and will practice typing (learning to type Dvorak) and general net use. Other potential uses, playing music through the surround sound from playlist or something?

What are the weaknesses and what things should I expect to be impacted?

S-video's resolution is technically 720x480 interlaced. When scaled from a high-res PC resolution, the video quality suffers tremendously. I have no doubt if you set your PC output low enough (say 640x480 or 800x600 max) text would be legible enough to navigate YouTube and watch videos, particularly if you used a front end to YouTube that's more TV friendly (like Boxee).

Just be sure your expectations are in check before you dive in. If you're thinking this will turn your TV into a PC monitor with crisp text and high-resolutions you'll be very disappointed. If you want that kind of experience, you'll need a PC friendly HDTV that can support higher resolutions via component video, VGA, DVI, or HDMI.

Thank you,

Thank you,

Do you still use the converter on HDTV set ups?

I may shop for a larger Monitor or a HDTV.

Provided the HDTV you buy sports a VGA input (like what your netbook has) that can accept common PC resolutions, then no adapter is required.

Hi Matt,

Hi Matt,

I have a question that I hope you can answer. I have a laptop (HP) with HDMI coming out and a tv with DVI going in. I need to buy a cable HDMI to DVI. I noticed that when looking for the cable they have different letters like, DVI-D MM cable and HDIM M or gold hdmi Etc. How do I know what to get? And I am planning on putting the laptop on my 40" HDTV and was wondering if the picture quality is going to worth me hooking this up.
Thanks
Don

28AWG should most likely suit your needs, but you could get 24AWG if you like.

The M stands for Male, so a cable that's HDMI to DVI MM means that it contains male connectors on both ends. That's what you need. Monoprice is down at the moment, but I'm sure Yog's suggestion will do the job just fine.

Hi Matt.

Hi Matt.

Here is a new one: I have a dell studio 15 laptop equipped with a ATI radeon HD 4570. I'm trying to connect it my very old TV through an S-Video cable but the problem is I can't reduce the resolution to 640x480 which worked fine with my previous laptop. The lowest I get is 800x600. As a result, I get only a black and white distorted TV screen. Any ideas?

Thanks, George

Hmmm, the set resolution shouldn't matter when using S-video with that card. Make sure the cable is fully plugged in at both ends, and make sure you're set to PAL or NTSC correctly depending on where you live.

I am trying to connect my HP

I am trying to connect my HP laptop to my Sanyo TV(which is about 6 years old. I purchased a component cable with the 15 pin connection to my laptop and then the audio cable. The audio works, but the connection to my TV is not working. It is just the blue screen. I have WIndows 7 on my laptop. I am no techy so I need some help. I tried changing the resolution to the lowest setting I have 800X600, then I had a black line vibrating on the tv screen.
