we have a Sony 32" tv that

we have a Sony 32" tv that blinks.  It's getting a little old trying to time my eye blinks with the TV blinks.  Any reason this could be happening?  The TV is probably 6 or  7 years old.  Is it worth getting a repairman to our house or should we pitch it and buy a new one?

Larry Dillon
The set is blinking most

The set is blinking most likly because of bad solder connections on the vertical output chip or the chip could be intermittant, or could be a fault in the horizontal driver circuit. These types or problems are a little difficult to diagnose without looking at the set. I have seen what some peeps call blinking a blankinging problem, all the way to a fading picture on the screen. A service tech should be able to tell with your sony as there are several voltage checks such as high voltage shutdown or blanking checks tht can be done simply with a multimeter. If your not experienced with trouble shooting solid state electronics, you should call a trained sony tech, as these sets can be dogs to repair if they are mis diagnoised. Sorry i could not be of more assistance. Let us know what the repair person did, if you have it fixed. Good Luck

My mom has a 1995 RCA t.v.

My mom has a 1995 RCA t.v. Model#P52731WK. The elec. co. updated the meter. The t.v. was on when they did this. The power went off when they took the old meter out and came back on when they put the new meter in. This was in a matter of a couple of minutes. When the power came back on the t.v. made a loud popping noise and nothing else. The elec. co. employee came inside and unplugged the t.v. and waited a minute and replugged it. Nothing happened. Checked the breaker and it was fine. The outlet that the t.v. was plugged into is fine. Push the power button and nothing happens. It is as if it is not plugged into an outlet. Is there a reset switch? If so, instructions on how to do this? Or will this even help? If not what is wrong? The t.v. had no previous problems and has worked fine until this happened. I think there was a power surge when this happened, but no way to prove it and mom has no finances to pay a repairman because my dad passed away within a few days of this happening. The elec. co. says they are not liable. Go figure?? I need any assistance in what the problem is and an easy fix if there is one or the knowledge to prove the elec. co. is resonsible for this problem. Please help.

Skill this ones for you.  It

Skill this ones for you.  It really is going to depend on how old this set is, as most the time when you get sparks and smell something burning, its going to most likly going to be the high voltage transformer.  If thats the case it not going to be worth fixing.  If the set is more then a few years old most likly it will cost you more then 75% of what a new one will cost if not more.  You should read this first. Here.  if you have any troubleshooting experience, maybe read this.  Good luck and let us know how tyou made out.

Larry Dillon
MW, it sounds like your going

MW, it sounds like your going to need to have the convergence ICs replaced.  they control the differant color beams and how they land on the screen.  if your experienced with using a soldering iron, and in serviceing any kind of solid state circuit boards get then your self and replace them.. But just a small worning of advice.  if you have not and want to try please do not and call out a pro to assist you in this repair, as it is dangerous to be experiemnting around inside of a TV set.   Good luck, and please dont forget to let us know how you made out.

Hi there. I have a samsung 24

Hi there. I have a samsung 24" widescreen analogue t.v, which i have had for approx 3 years. It started with the picture disappearing, but with a good tap on the back it came back. Now thw picture has completely gone. turned it off for a while yesterday and when i switched it back on there was a line across the centre of the screen. Still no picture, but got sound. What is likely to be the problem? Is it worth getting it fixed or better to buy new?

Larry Dillon
That would totally depend on

That would totally depend on what you will have to pay for a new one.  It sounds like you have a vertical sweep falure.  It was most likly a bad solder connection in the beginning, and as you hit the set to get it to work, the IC gets a shock and this causes the regulator section of the IC to fail, so total IC falure occours.  In the US a repair such as this, if no other parts ar bad, will run between 85 to 145.00.  Your should read this.  Good Luck, and would you please get back with us and let us know if you got your TV fixed and how?

Panasonic PV-M2021 Onivision

Panasonic PV-M2021 Onivision TV - VHS combo.

Hello,

This is my first time posting and to be honest not very literate on electronics, so I might need added help here.

My problem is with the above mentioned tv, it is in my 8 year old daughters bedroom and sometimes she pushs wrong buttons. Of her age she thinks she can fix the problem by pushing more and more buttons of which usually only makes the problem worse.

This is precisely what she did this time and now the tv will only show channels 2 through 8, 10 through 15, 19, 30 and 45.

This same thing happened a few years back and the tv was unplugged for awhile and when it was plugged back up and it worked fine.  I have tried to do that again several times even leaving it unplugged for like 2 weeks and there is no change.

I know somehow the channel search has to be reprogrammed but I do not have the remote nor the manuel and have no clue as to how to take on this task.

Also I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not but the timer light is flashing green, if that is a problem I have no clue as to how to correct that problem either.

I know the tv is older, but it plays fine otherwise I am a single parent and can't afford to purchase another tv right now can someone plese help me out with this.

Thank You So Much in advance for any and all help !

A very dramatic thread and

A very dramatic thread and way of asking a question! On a Panasonic set, such as this model number, can be from, a bad flyback transformer all the way to a simple cold solder connections on the same, or in the main power supply. Its a very hard call, as there is no simple BLACK and WHITE answers to a TV set repair when it is a question as a dead set. Do you have Any TV repair experience at all? Do you have a multi meter and know how to use it. Im sorry but there is no reset for this or any solid state set except to unplug it for 24 hours. And if it does not work after that, If you do not have the repair experience, please find a servicer in your area to assist you in this repair. But please, if you do find out what was wrong , let us know , as maybe oneday it will help someone else out. Good Luck

Larry, Yeah it is rather dramatic. I wonder how it got like that and how it got posted on November 15th. I posted that question in June (I think) and it was not spaced out like that. Very strange! Anyway about the TV, no, I did not have any TV repair experience at that time, but now not only have I supervised the repair of my own TV but I have walked 2 other people through the prcedure and one of those two notified me with positive results. The fix is one that I don't think the manufactures want people to know about. THE FUSE.

Larry Dillon
Well heck thats an easy fix!!

Well heck thats an easy fix!!  I guess always check the simple things first..  A fuse very rarly though goes bad because the fuse is defective.  A fuse will mostly go bad because of a short like condition in an electronic circuit and for sure should blow out because of a shorted condidtion.  Now I will agree, I have in the past, seen a few cases or lets say some fuses that simply gave up and failed.  One example I can think of and has happened most recently, is the Pioneer projection set.  You have a set thats engineered very well, looks good and the whole kit and kaboodle goes down for no reason all of a sudden.  You replace and open fuse.  By the way the fuse is not black in color at all.  It is simply looks like the fuse element got tired and gave up.  That is exactly has happened, as this Pioneer set, when it starts up has a high volume of a surge voltage, as every time you do turn on this set, you can see the fuse element inside the fuse flex.  This is simply a case of under engineering.  In the case of the early Pioneer projection TV set, If you have a 5 amp fuse inside it, It was recommended to replace the 5 amp fuse with a 6 amp slow-blo type and this would prevent the fuse from flexing , as to stop the fuse fatiuge problem..  Yes I have see a few sets in the past where only the fuse blows out But it is very rare , As I have stated, A fuse is there to protect the circuit and to make sure the said circuit does not overload and cause a fire.  If you do find and open fuse, NEVER ever just replace the fuse and say Oh ok a fuse is bad.. NO NO NO!  You can and most likly will in 95% of these cases, as if the fuse was black?   You should take a light bulb, a 100 watt bulb, with a pig-tail socket, and jump that said bad black blown fuse with the two leads of the pig-tail light bulb, turn on the set, and if that light bulb glows bright, you know for sure you still have a short inside this set.  If it glows bright for a few seconds, then slowly gets dim, the set has no short, and this will indicate that there is no short, most of the time, in the TV set circuits..

Larry,

One of the salesmen I ran into while trying to locate the correct fuse said the same thing. I hope that my diagnosis is correct and that there is not a bigger problem brewing inside the set. My belief is that the remote control and impatience have blown the fuse. The problem is the TV takes a second or two before you see anything on the screen and sometimes we assume that it did not get the signal to turn on so we inadvertently hit the button again which causes the TV to be turned on and off again and on again all within about 1 second. The day it went out I was the impatient one htting the buttons and I noticed a flash of light that came from behind the set as I did it.

As a precaution I did change the way the TV was plugged in. It was plugged into an outlet on a dohickie that gave me 6 outlets at the wall instead of 2. We eliminated that thing and bought a surge protector which acommodates all of the other components and the TV is plugged directly into the wall outlet. If it blows another fuse I guess I will need to bite the bullet and seek professional assistance from a shop and give up trying to fix it myself.

Thank you for your feedback. I guess I should put a smoke detector behind the TV as another precaution.

Thanks for the info, unfortunently I had to call out a PRO.  What they found was a plug that plugs into the convergance module had a loose wire that had come unseated from the plug. He orginally thought that he had to replace the convergance module, but as he was pulling the tray out and started to unplug the module a wire was loose.

laura d your funny, I like

laura d your funny, I like your sense of humor. After all if we cant have fun, what good is life? LOL. Please keep us informed. If you can find a radio shack or even a repair shop, you should be able to get the fuse. Its an AGC type, regular size fuse at 3.15 to 6 amps or Mini ATM type fuses.

Go to Radioshack and buy a universal remote, program it for your TV and then you should be able to get into the menu for channel autoprogramming.

Does anyone have the default

Does anyone have the default code to remove the channel block on a Magnavox model: MT 1901B101? I don't have the owners manual or the orginal remote, just a universal one. Through the remote I can access the menu screen and channel set up options, but to begin any step, the channel block has to be removed by using a 4 digit code. Every channel has this block! The owners manual for this model has been unavailable or the model can not be found when I go to download the "sacred document" for a small piece of vital info. And the TV was manufactored in 2000. MAGNAVOX CODE MASTER WHERE ARE YOU?

Larry,

Larry,

It is me again. I thought I should ask you about what the Radio Shack salesman said about the fuse. He told me it is totally fine to use a slow blow 6.3 amp / 250 volt fuse to replace a 6.3 amp / 125 volt fuse. Is that true? It seems like it could allow too much voltage through if there is a power surge. He told me that the most a standard duplex outlet will put out is 120 volt. I think he is wrong about that but maybe he is right about the fuse being a safe substitution. So I did install the 6.3/250 but I want to get your input.

I have a two year old

I have a two year old panasonic 36" tv and about six months ago it started making a high pitch (almost like a feedback sound) when the tv is on.  It is only off and on but it is slowly becoming more on than off.  I can hear the sound coming from the back of the tv and if I hit the side sometimes it will shut up for a while.  My stereo speakers are nowhere near the tv neither are any other electronics so I know it isn't feedback.  Could anyone let me know what the problem could be so that if I call a repairman, I might have a few ideas on what it could be and does anyone know how expensive things like this cost? thank you..I feel like I am becoming hearing impaired or crazy with all this high-pitched noise.
