Video Playback / Recording Devices

My recorder writes fine to DVD+RW disks but when I try to record on a DVD+R, I get an immediate disk error and the unit pretty well goes nuts. I have tryed several different media brands and speeds with the same results. I tryed Phillips tech support but they were just interested in collecting $15. I just need to know if this is a common problem or does the unit need repair. The unit also will play other disks DVD+Rs that have been recorded on other machines.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just recently purchased an APEX model AD800-A (yes I know that it was recalled as it violates a copyright law, but I have no intentions to do misdeeds with it) I purchased this particular model of dvd player because I needed a dvd player with a vga output (so that I don't need a seperate tv taking up space in my room) and at least a 5.1 surround sound system. The player reades music cds and mp3 cds fine, but when a dvd is inserted, it comes up with a no disk error. The person who sold me the dvd player told me of this problem, and suggested that it may be an alignment problem.

Please help!
Just bought Toshiba SD-3860SC progressive scan dvd player, pluged it in and it displays black and white welcome screen and plays dvd's in black and white. What's the problem and how can I fix it?
