Television and Home Theater

I have a 26" Samsung LCD Tv...i believe the model number is LNR268W.  Anytime i go to watch a DVD thats a widescreen the bars remain no matter what.  When i put the TV in Widescreen mode it just stretches the picture out, and the bars remain.  (So its like its staying in the 4:3 format)

The DVD player is hooked up through an S video connection.  I'm thinking the problem maybe the DVD player.  Its  a cheap APEX not sure what the model # is (I'm at work so i'm trying to go off memory).

we have recently purchased a samsung home cinema lcd package and just 2 days later we have noticed on the dvd playerr a flashing sign saying FAN CHECK,b4 we send it off 2 be repaired does anyone know what the solution could be.

My 1993 samsung television ttb2012 won't turn on when the power button
is pushed... though the red light inside the power button will
blink/flash for awhile. I use the tv to watch movies through VCR and
DVD players. It was working fine, shut off properly after use, then
one week later I tried to again turn it on. On this model, there is no
keypad to access any controls other than power, volume, and channels.
