Television and Home Theater

I have a Pioneer PDP 4304 plasma display monitor that is 14 months old that has a two inch wide blank space horizantally across screen. I took it to a authorized service shop that kept the monitor for 4 weeks, they finally told me I needed to replace the screen at a cost of $1600. The warranty was for 12 months and it seem to be a waste to spend that amount of money with plasma monitors costing $1299 now. Just looking for some advice or options. Thanks in advance.

I have a 2001 Toshiba model # 36AF41 36" flat screen TV. When I turn
the set on I get a very small narrow line across the center of the
screen.  The rest of the screen is black. Sound is good. Is the
tube bad?
