Television and Home Theater

this was hand down from a relative, im not sure if i should spend much money on it if the repairs are too expensive. when i try to turn on the tv it does 2 clicks and thats it. it seem it wants to turn on but shuts of right away. dont know where to go from here, any advise would be greatlly appreciated. serious responses only please.

We bought a Sony KF-50WE620 in April and were very pleased with it. We had some work done on our home about 3 weeks ago and while they were working our tv picture screen was nothing but blue,green,and red pixel stripes. Later in the day the picture was fine. Came home from Vacation this week and picture was fine first day, but nothing but pixel stripes second day. Called Sony and they told me to unplug it to reset itself overnight. Next morning picture back again until I unplugged tv during an electrical storm. Now it is nothing but colorful pixel stripes again. What is wrong with this tv?

I repaired TV's and VCR's from 1970 until 1997 when I went into industrial electronics. So, I've been out of touch for a few years.
My brother just called me from FL (I'm in NV) and his Sony TV picture went black, but the audio is fine. When he first turns it on a quick flash of light appears on the screen and then it goes black.
