Television and Home Theater

I recently purchased a used 52' rca hdtv. when i got it home and plugged in, the picture is almost like a double vision, or a mirror image. any suggestions on what i could do to possible repair this myself?

I have tried to set the television but still have a black bar above and below the picture. I have tried the settings on the menu and put it to "full screen" but it still has the vertical bars when using the cable box and dvd player.

but before i post this thread, i've tried to read up the article about "factors of choosing a tv"
and i also tried looking by using the search...

i just wanna know what actually is a black level?
i know its something to do with brightness...
is there any distinction between brightness and black level or is it just a synonym?


and I'm currently deciding whether to purchase a DLP/Plasma/LCD(particularly the Sony Bravia)

answer to either one of my question will be very much appreciated...
