Thank you for the response

Thank you for the response zapdbf. My concern is laying out another $400 and having the same problem in a year or so. The PTV was purchased in 2004. I know technology has changed dramatically since then. We still get a great picture and probably wouldn't make much use of many of the new and improved features on a new unit. Having said that, $800 would apparently buy a decent replacement. That raises the question of whether or not to get another PTV. My searches on the web for this problem seem to imply convergance IC's are a major source for repair bills. Would you mind commenting on that and perhaps making a recommendation on a replacement please, if you feel that is the route to take.

I work on these, day in and

I work on these, day in and day out. The only time that i have a return was in the beginning for the problems i stated. You may want to consider a new flat panel television although they are not without their problems as well. The reason for this is that as your projection tv ages the crt (picture tubes) become more prone to failure making another 400 gamble not worth it. As far as the new flat panel televisions, the main problems with these are panel failure. Not that the percentages of failures are that great but if the tv fails the most likely cause will be a bad panel either through delaminating, backlight failure or edge connector failure. Anything made by man can and will break at some time. In general they seem to be holding up better because the voltages and currents used are coming down and the components that need to control these voltages are not as stressed as in picture tube tvs.

Since I am a tv repairman I never bought extended warranties I could always fix them myself. But now I do because any part in the new televisions will run you into the hundreds of dollars. The tech labor is no longer the largest cost to the repair it is now the parts. All of the televisions made now are board replacement no longer can we replace a component. There are a couple of reasons this is true, before technicians would train on new televisions and the manufacturers would give us great training on the new technology and how to service it down to the component level. But today no manufacturer will train or support the technician to this level. They will only support the tech to board level replacement. The second reason is component availability, many of the component level IC?s are not available.

Below I digress ?.. But it is worth the read.

My personal take on this is that most of this stuff is coming from china. No matter who you buy your tv from it comes from ?china inc.? Many of the boards are made by the same hardware supplier to specs provided by the brand, then assembled in another location. If your tv fails early and you have a bad experience, you then condemn the brand on the television and buy another brand even though many brands are from the same manufacturer. You pick you next television and it so happens to be the same manufacturer but you don?t realize it. They still got you to purchase a new tv out of your anger with the old and made more money than if they supported you with your previous problem.
Example: I have found Samsung boards in many brands of televisions, Including Magnavox, Philips and most brands you never heard of. Sony is still it?s own company and makes it?s own tv components for the most part. Sharp is another one to swap boards around I see sharp and Samsung boards mixed in some sets.
The general public does not really realize how we have been taken over by Chinese imports and how it works. It is hard to talk about this and not sound like some lunatic because it seems so hard to believe. But being in the repair business you see what goes? into this technology and you begin to realize that you might as well get rid of all the brands and call everything ; ?Manufacturer: China.Inc? It really is that bad.

Hi zapdbf.

Hi zapdbf.

Thank you for your straight forward response! You seem like the kind of technician I wish I had doing the service on my tv. It looks like the next few days are going to be very interesting. I'm going to try and wade through all of the contradictory/confusing info I'm sure I'll find on the subjects of options/features and pros and cons of the various products.

Thanks again.

One word of caution about

One word of caution about extended warranties, make sure not to purchase one that will depreciate the set, this is a terrible warranty if it is near the end of the warranty contract and you have a panel problem they will buy out your contract and leave you with nothing. I have seen them depreciate 4 year old 52" flat panels that you may have paid 3,000.00 for to $300.00 and give them a check for $300.00 and cancel the warranty. This is a fact that we have seen!
