If your PS2 is under warranty

If your PS2 is under warranty, take it back and get a new one.  If not, you can try and fix it yourself.  There's a few people that have written online guides for fixing this problem.  Here's one example:  Fixing the Disk Read ErrorNOTE: If you open your PS2, your warranty will be voided, so beware!  You could also damage your device if you do something wrong.

Over time, things like lint and hair become trapped inside the disc-reader housing of your PS2. I had the same problem with mine, but it was easily fixed. If you don't mind voiding your service warranty, there's a way to save yourself some repair. Take the cover off your PS2 (the screws are under the little covers on the bottom of the console). With the screws out, CAREFULLY lift off the cover from front to back, and be careful not to pull on the foil power strip that runs to the on/off switch. Now remove the tiny screws that hold the cover onto the disc reader. Lift it straight up to remove it. With the cover off, you should see the familiar reader/laser assembly. Look for dust bunnies, entangled hairs, and anything else that doesn't belong. Remove them with a soft paintbrush, tweezers, or a can of compressed air. Do not touch the reader eye or laser assembly with your hands. When you're done, put everything back together. This SHOULD fix it, but if it doesn't, the problem may be with the spindle (the part that turns the disc). That part can be replaced rather easily at less than the cost of a new system.
