How Can I Hook Up My TV's Audio to My Home Theater?

Question: I have just bought a DURABRAND SA51AR home theatre system to go with my DURABRAND 2127N TV and DURABRAND CG5660-M Freeview set-top box. I have connected all my output leads (the speaker ones). I have only one red, yellow, and white jack on my TV and three sets of red and white jack leads with home theatre system. I can't get sound no matter how many times I've swapped the input leads... any ideas whats going wrong :(

Answer:

If I get you right, you have a home theater system, a TV, and a freeview set-top, but can't get any sound from the TV through your external audio system.

If that's the gist, let's look at a few things.

Based on your description, it doesn't sound like your TV has an OUTPUT... only an input (since there's only 1 set of jacks). If this is the case, you won't be able to connect the TV to the receiver directly. That's no big deal really; all you need to do connect the audio output from the set-top box to the home theater system directly (run the video cable to the TV) and simply bypass the TV for sound. You'll be forced to use the receiver to hear any audio, but who needs TV speakers when you've got external audio. :)

If your TV has an audio OUTPUT jack on the back, you can run the set-top to your TV first, then back out from the TV to the audio system. It's a little trickier, but will work if your TV supports this type of connection. Follow the steps below to do this:

1. Make sure that the red and white cable that goes between your TV and audio system is plugged in to the right spots. You don't need to worry about the yellow. On the TV, the cable should be plugged into an OUTPUT. On the audio system, an INPUT.

2. Check the TVs menu to enable the audio output. Look in the menus that may allow you to turn the output on or off, or look for something that asks if the output should be fixed or variable. If you have that choice, choose fixed. In some cases, you need to disable the TV speakers to use the audio output.

3. On the receiver, make sure that you've selected the correct input, and that it's looking at the analog jacks for sound. Some audio systems won't look at the analog by default if a digital signal is not present (if one is assigned).

hi, i have the same system and problem. Explaining it a bit better, the problem is that the system has 6 input connections, which are:- FL(white), FR(red), SL(white), SR(red), CEN(white) and SW(red). How is it possible to connect this when a tv or dvd only has 1 pair of outputs? Thanks.

The six channel direct input isn't intended to connect to an external digital surround processor or decoder of some sort. Unless your system is only comprised of a six channel amp, your system should also have L/R inputs labeled (for example:) Video 1, TV, DVD, VDP, etc. Connect it to one of those and you should all be set.

If you want a more direct answer, you'll need to share a little more about your system, TV, and other source components.

the system doesn't have a seperate amp, all connections go to the sub woofer. the input connections i've already mentioned are the only ones, there is no Video 1, tv, etc. My tv, dvd and sky box all have only one pair of outputs.

What's the make and model of your audio system?

Okay, I think I have a better idea of what you're talking about now. It looks something like this, right:

If not, then do you have one that came with a DVD player type device?

If so, then it's not surprising there's only one six channel input. Now, there's no online resources for generic products like this (a web search on your model yeilded nothing) and there's no place to find manuals, so I'm going to be guessing a bit based on experiences with similar products. It (most likely) includes a low pass filter to direct bass from the satellites to the sub, so you should be able to plug it into your stereo source and get sound from the front L/R and sub, but no surround sound. Depending on what other features it has, it may include processing for stereo to surround sound on the remote, but not being able to find an exact match for your product it will be hard to say for sure.

You can get discreet 5.1 surround sound from disc sources that include a built-in digital decoder or six channel output. If you don't see six channel output (6 cables) then you won't get discreet 5.1 sound.

If you have more than one source to connect to it, you can add in a multi-input audio switch (it has many inputs and one output, and you press the button of the source you want to hear). They're pretty cheap, and are available at most electronic stores.

ok thanks for your help. guess the best thing is to get a better one! thanks again.

Hi

Hi
I,ve just bought a DURABAND SA51AR 5.1 surround system only to find out that my dvd isnt 5.1 compatible ie only has one red & one white phono out a 5.1 surround sound dvd/cinema surround will have 5/6 phono out connectors. So what I have done is go to Maplins or shop online for either 6/6 or 2 3/3 male phono cables & 4 1 into 2 phono splitters connect one splitter in each of your red & white phono out on your dvd then connect the other splitters in one other splitters out holes making 6 phono out holes on the back of your dvd connect one end of your male phono cables to the input of your subwoofer then connect the other end ( 3 males left 3 males right to your 3 females left 3 females right on the back of your dvd ) the subwoofer has its own amplifier, this isn,t giving you 5.1 surround sound but it is giving you stereo through 5 speakers it,s a better sound than the television the only problem I have is I can,t control the volume using the tv or set top box remote can anybody help me on that point ?
