Sony Wide Screen Model KP-57WS510

I am having a convergence problem with my wide screen tv, even though I hit flash focus and try to adjust the convergence manually, it won't respond. The picture shows at least 3 different colour shadows and the picture looks concave. Any input would be much appreciated .

You have the typical

You have the typical convergence problem that almost every tube type rear projection set ever made has.  There are two black IC's that start with STK on them that stand up against a metal heat sink that will need to be changed.  It also sound like there may be a bad circuit protector , or feedback resistors that are blown in this set as well.  These parts are soldered into place so you will need to first know how to solder on printed circuit boards.  You will also need to get a service manual to trace and measure the voltages on the convergence IC's as well as do a convergence alighnment with the on screen service mode that this set has.  If you have no experience with these things, play it safe and call in a pro to assist you with this repair.  Good Luck and let us know what you found out about this repair job.

Yes sure and it is really no bother or you are not imposing, A repair like this, depending on where you live and who does the repair, should run you anywhere from 300 to 400 bucks.

Larry:  I have the convergence problem with my KP-57WS510 mentioned on this and other threads.  Red and blue I can adjust properly but green is way off on the sides top and bottom.  I ordered the STK392-560 ics.  I pulled the G and D boards out to check for open fuses or resistors.  I used an ohmmeter with the parts still soldered in.  I didn't find any of the fuses and resistors under the heat sink fins to be open they all had very low to zero resistance.  Is that normal?  If any one of these parts were blown open would I catch with the meter while the parts are still in circuit?

I found +-22 volts and +-15 volts on the D board so I assume the G board is OK?  I just want to make sure no other part is bad before I swap out the ICs and apply power.  I see you sometimes send out the service manual.  If it has schematics could you send me a copy to [email protected]?

Thanks Larry.  I appreciate it.  The download is missing a few pages where the schematics and voltage tables belong.  Is there a way for me to get the schematics and tables?

Download and use the KP51,57HW40, it uses the same chassis and the same boards.

Replaced the two STK392-560

Replaced the two STK392-560 ics only and now the picture is back to normal.  Thanks to this web site saved many dollars in repair expenses.

I bought the parts; 2 STK392

I bought the parts; 2 STK392-560, 4.7 ohm resistors and the pico fuse(s) for my convergence issue. I think I'm ready to repait it, but before I do this, I was wondering if there is a need to discharge the high voltage/flyback?? If yes please advice how to do this. I will take any advice from you guys. Thanks!

I have the same problem with my Sony KP-57WS510 wide screen tv. I bought the parts and I am ready to do the work. However, when I try to lift the D board, it seems to be stuck around the flyback transformer where the big fat red wire is attached. I removed 5 screws from the board which was holding the board down. I am thinking that there's another one that i have not seen.

Please help.

Same problem, do you have any other suggestions. Thanks

Check the pico fuses for the +17.5v and -17.5v for the STK chips. If you have proper high voltage training you could measure the voltage at the STK ICs.

You can ohm out the two pico

You can ohm out the two pico fuses that feed the +22v and -22v to the STK chips. The pico fuses are located at the output of the power transformer on the G board. Follow the +22v and -22v wires on the schematic to the transformer on the G board. There is one pico fuse for each voltage. Altogether, there are 8 pico fuses, two for the G board voltages and six for the STK chip outputs on the D board.

The two picos on the G board tested ok and so are the 7 on the D board. Considering i've replaced the two ICs,should i replaced all the picos even though they tested ok?. Is it possible to completely remove the D board?, it seems the flyback is connected to everything.

Ive inherited a same KP

Ive inherited a same KP-51WS510 with the same usual problem, convergence.
I should have turned the set on to verify the problem before I started messing with it, but I didnt.
So, I ordered the STK chips, swapped them out, checked the 8 pico fuses, and changed PS5002, which was the only one that was blown.
Now when I turn it on, I get the fast standby LED pulses, relay kick, another few seconds of fast LED pulses, another relay kick, then I get the standby LED flashing 4 times, pause, 4 more flashes, until I pull power off. Slight click in the speakers, absolutely nothing from the guns.
Downloaded and followed the info for the 4 flashes problem...
Checked for +15 and -15 volts at the power supply, at the A board and at the D board. All check good (well the 15v is actually 15.2v on both sides). +15v at the test point on the D board, -15v at the test point on the D board.
When I took the connectors off, I made a list as I went and did the same thing putting it back together, so, unlike other technicians I know, I am 99.9999% confident that everything is back where it was.
I tried to get into the service modes (Display, 5, Vol+, Power and Display, 5, Vol-, Power), no worky.
The next semi-obvious step would be to swap out the LA78045.
Is this a reasonable course of action?
Should I be checking for the actual pulses coming out of the LA78045 before replacing it?
Also, just downloaded the 51HW40 service manual to see if there is any better information in there.

If the fuses are good and you have +22v and -22v at the STKs then I think it is a problem with the horizontal circuit. Can you post a picture of the screen? When entering service mode (previous poster described how) do you see any old error codes?

I have a 51WS520 that appeared to have a STK chip problem due to the convergence being off and a bow tie effect. It turned out to be a FQPF12P20XDTU (Q8035) transistor failure. The C-E junction of the transistor was shorted and caused a loss of horizontal control. Test Q8035 and then Q8038 for shorts across the three pins. If you need the FQPF12P20XDTU transistor, you can get it from Mouser.com for $1.50 (Fairchild semiconductor) or from a TV parts store online for $15 (what a rip). Both Q8035 and Q8038 are on the D board.

I replaced the LA78045...  Works like a champ now!!!  And, to boot, after a 1 hour warmup, I went to the convergence menu and it needed NO adjustment...ZERO...Nadda...  What are the chances!

I just did one of those.

I just did one of those. Replaced both convergence IC's and one of the pico fuses on the power supply board. Good to go.

You said the IC's were replaced awhile back, and now it's back to the same thing. I'll bet they put exactly the same STK392-560's back in there. The STK392-570 are the same thing, but capable of a bit higher heat, a bit tougher in a way of speaking.
But I think the thing that'll help you the most is to read this thread all the way thru and do some more searching on the problem.
The answers are out there, and if you're handy with a soldering iron, you should be able to fix this problem (assuming it is actually the convergence ICs and/or pico fuses) for around $50USD.
