I have a KP-51WA510 that I bought new in October 2003. I've had problems with this TV since the day it was delivered.
The TV flickers/flashes a blue/purple color periodically. I can't remember exactly what they did, but Sony repaired the TV (under warranty) twice by, I believe, replacing the "A board". Their fix never solved the problem though.
After my warranty was up I had a local repair shop send a guy out to look at the TV. He told me Sony rarely fixes the actual problem and always chooses the cheapest solution. Without taking anything apart he told me he thinks the blue CRT is bad and since that’s an expensive fix that’s why Sony kept replacing the A board. It seemed a little questionable to me that this guy was able to tell me the CRT was bad without actually looking inside the TV or taking any measurements.
My first question is: Does this sound reasonable based on the flickering blue/purple I described? Also, if the CRT is indeed bad, will its failure have caused damage to any other components?
My second question is: I’m an aerospace engineer with enough electronics experience to be dangerous (i.e. I’ve soldered IC’s, I’m comfortable taking electronics apart and using a meter/scope, etc.), do you guys think I can replace the CRT on my own (or make any other needed repairs)?
Lastly, can you guys recommend a place to buy the parts to fix this TV? Are there any other components I should replace while I have it apart? Are there any special things I should be aware of before working on the TV? Will I have issues aligning the CRT’s?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I've spent the last couple days browsing your site and you have lots of great info here – I’m very hopeful that I’ll get this figured out.
I want to add that originally the TV would flicker/flash once every few weeks/months (if that - it was hardly noticeable and the TV was watchable). Now it flicker/flashes every 5 seconds and the TV is essentially worthless.
Any comments anyone has on this would be greatly appreciated - I'm TV-less until I get this figured out.
Also, can someone email me the service manual for this TV?
Thanks!
Does anyone know the part number of the blue CRT and can anyone recommend where I should purchase it from? Is replacing a CRT as "simple" as pulling the old one out and installing the new one?
No my friend. Replacing a picture tube involves some mechanical alignments as well as electrical alignments. There are procedures on doing these alignments. I happen to have the service manual as well as the convergence procedures as prescribed by Sony. If you wish to receive these documents, please leave an e-mail address and I will share them with you. Is the model number the same as the thread listing? Oh by the way, once you receive the service manual, you can also look up the part number of the tube you need. Good Luck
My email address is [email protected]. Does the problem I described sound like a bad blue picture tube? It would be unfortunate to spend the time and money to replace the blue tube only to find out that it wasn't the problem.
Thank you!
I have a short video of the TV flickering if that would help someone diagnose the problem. My email address is listed above - if you would like to take a look at it send me an email and I'll forward it to you.
So, should the Blue CRT be replaced by itself or should I replace the entire board/CRT package? After some searching on the net it looks like the part number I need is CN7309. Does that sound correct to you guys?
Sorry to keep posting...
Where is the best place to buy replacement parts? I would imagine buying through Sony (if possible) should be avoided at all costs...?
I discovered another problem. My serial number is 8,71X,XXX and all the CRT's I can find (part number 8-735-185-05) say they are for serial number 9,000,0001 to 9,700,000 only. Where can I find the part number of the CRT for my serial number?
You should have the service manual to look it up now. I cannot say if the tube is bad by what you are describing.
I just called the local repair center. They want $100 to diagnose the TV, then if it’s a major repair (which I'm assuming it will be), they charge a flat rate of $175 plus parts. Assuming they replace the blue CRT, the parts will cost (as far as i can tell from limited internet searching) $150-$175. So the total cost if I have them do the repairs is going to be at least $400, probably more.
If you guys think that I can handle replacing and aligning a CRT, the cost of this repair is more than cut in half since I save $275. Can anyone chime in and tell me how I deal with the serial number issue (i.e. I have a 8,XXX,XXX set and the manual quotes part numbers for 9,XXX,XXX and above), and let me know where to go to buy these parts?
Thanks!
So does anyone know what the story is with the serial numbers? Can someone recommend a place to buy the replacement CRT?
Your help is certainly appreciated as like I said previously, I am without a TV until I get this fixed (hence my urgency).
Thanks!
Hey dude, you need to call Sony or a Sony authorized parts house to answer your question about the serial number issue. Constant e-mails will not get it for you. Also if you have no experience replacing a picture tube, you really should leave it to the pros, as it can be very dangerous. There is 32,000 volts on that picture tube, even after you take the tube out of the set. This is enough to throw a grown man across the room and kill them. Play it safe, if you do not have the proper test equipment to align the TV set after the tube replacement, call in a pro. Good Luck
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction as far as how to get the part number for the picture tube. I apologize for bothering you with emails I was only trying to draw upon you’re apparent intimate knowledge of these types of things to help troubleshoot my set. I appreciate your concern about my safety but I do have the manual (thank you by the way) and I have a reasonable amount of electronics experience. I will be sure to read the manual and completely understood the hazards of the system I’m working on before I take anything apart and attempt any repairs.
I have some additional information about the problems I’m experiencing that may help you guys diagnose the root of the problem.
After the TV flashes to the point that it shuts off, the TIMER/STANDBY light blinks 6 times, stays off for a couple seconds, blinks six times, stays off for a couple seconds, etc.
I pulled up the self diagnostic screen and I have a (1) under “6: Low B”. The manual says this occurs when the +5V is out and the likely cause is either the +5V line being overloaded (A, B-Boards) or the +5V line being shorted (A, B-Boards).
The odd thing is that the manual states that this problem should cause “no picture”. In my case, when I turn the TV back on after it flashes/shuts off the picture will display fine for 5-10 seconds before it starts flashing and shuts off again. Does this still sound like a CRT problem or perhaps still CRT related? I’ll have to look for the paperwork but I believe the warranty repairs Sony performed twice previously was to replace the A-board. Could the CRT be causing the A-board to fail or could something else cause the A-board to fail which in turn could cause the CRT to fail?
Thanks again!
No man, I was not saying you are wrong by any means about asking questions in this forum about your problems.. What I was referring to was the four to five post, in a row, within a 20 minute time span, in my personal e-mail, within yesterday about the same thing you are asking here. If I had an answer here , why would I have not answered you? By all means, I am not bashing your , or knocking you by any means. Lets try to keep questions to a forum level please.
Oh you updated the original file posted. Thanks for that!
Thank you Larry and I apologize for that first post. I really do appreciate you're input/feedback and I will be sure to limit myself to reasonable posting intervals. :)
Larry, do you by chance have any more suggestions for me based on the additional information I posed - 6 blinks and a (1) under "6 Low B" on the self diagnostic screen? Do I need to pull both the A and B boards and start component level troubleshooting? Since the set still turns on, would that lead you to believe that it's one board or the other? I'm just looking to be pointed in the right direction so any suggestions would be appreciated.
can you relate the flicker with the volume, turn the volume completly down on the tv and see if the flicker goes away, there is a sb about a pinched wire going to the speaker, this will cause extra stress on the power supply causing the voltages to become unstable.
Also can i see the video [email protected]

one thing that you can do is to look into the neck of the tubes with the room as dark as you can, and see if you see any of them flashing, this could be a shorted g2 this set has has allot of problems in the early production with some crt's. if you see any flashing then you have a bad tube. if you don't see flashing, you can gently tap on the neck with the handle of a screwdriver to make it act up, but be carefull you can distroy the tube in a firey explosive dangerous mess if you crack the neck. (be very very carefull if you do this)
Be vewwwrryyy careful!
when using sony manuals, the stated repair for that blink code is generaly not correct, the reason is correct, but so many things can cause each problem the blink code is only the first step. somtimes you get lucky and there is a service bulliton about a particular blink code, but that does not mean that your problem is the one listed in the service bulliton.
In general i believe that allot of people here believe that a blink code will equial a specific part bad. that is not true, it is true that blink codes may indicate a "common problem" with the set. but that same blink code can be somthing completely diffrent.
And it is true when you get a 6 blink code the picture will go off because the tv goes into shut down. that is all that is saying. not what happend before it went to a 6 blink shutdown
can u send me the service mannal forkp-51ws510 thank you
I have to change out my Flyback transformer, is this going to be a difficult fix. If somebody could send me a manaul for a Sony KP-51WS510 to [email protected], I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks
Not really a hard repair but who told you the flyback was bad or what makes you think it is bad?
When I turn on the TV there is only audio, and then it turns off and blinks eight times repeatedly. I was told that this was a high volt issue and the flyback needed to be replaced.
It could be the high voltage transformer, but it could also be the high voltage distribution block, a bad connection on the horizontal drive transformer(common problem), bad connections in the high voltage circuit on the D board. You would be much better off to have the D board rebuilt. This way if your told the D board tested good, you would know that the high voltage block was most likely bad. Good Luck
Would you happen to have a copy of the service manual. If you do my e-mail is [email protected], Thanks for your help.
Can anyone send me a copy of the service manual for the KP-51WS510? I am getting the 6 blink code and have the A board out but no manual to troubleshoot it.
I really need some help with my 4 year old KP-51WS510... The TV was working find until for about 4 months ago.. The the following started to happen.
1) for the past 4 months, when I would turn on the TV, the picture would not fill in for several minutes. Only 1/2 the picture screen would fill in (showing the full image, but on 1/2 the screen gradually filling into the whole screen). The picture was a bit distorted. Looked like a smile towards the bottom of the screen. After 5 minutes or so, the picture would fill in completely and everything was OK.
2) Now, in addition to what I described above, the picture is extremely purple. I can see the image completely and the TV is viewable, however it has an extreme purple hue. Also, it flickers quite abit. The indicator light above the power light on the TV blinks 5 times.
Any ideas on what might be wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks
Vinay
I have a Sony KP51WS510, but for some reason I can't turn the power on. It has 8 blinks, and I replaced the flyback, but it didn't change anything. Should I replace the HV block?
Please help.
