Sony Convergence Procedure

Sony Convergence Procedure

Document version 1.1

( I Will update as needed and if errors are found, please let me know and I will issue an update)

Changing values in the service mode can cause your tv to malfunction, this text will only explain how to adjust the factory convergence. Before changing any other values make sure you know what you are doing.

To Enter Service mode With the tv off and the remote in tv mode, press the following keys:[DISPLAY],[5],[VOL UP(+)],[POWER]

The tv will now display "3D-COMB" in the upper left hand corner.

Press the [2] or [5] keys to move up or down through the adjustment categories until you see "PJE" in the upper left hand corner(note that the letters will change to a different font).

Next press the [6] key twice, this will bring up a grid (crosshatch) without video behind it. When I refer to the [CENTER] key, It is located in the middle of the directional arrow keys on the remote.

When cursor is white, you can move it to an adjustment point using the arrow keys. Once you press the [CENTER]  button, the cursor will lock to that adjustment point. It will now change to one of three colors ; Red, Green, or Blue. The color of the cursor will be the color you are adjusting. To change the color press the [3] key only when the cursor is locked to an adjustment point, pressing the [3] key when you are in navigation mode will have no effect. By Pressing the [CENTER] button again will switch you back to navigation mode.

To save your changes press the [MUTING] then [ENTER] keys on the remote.

Important notes

Not all Sony's will function in the exact same way that I outlined above. Below I have made notes of the differences.

  1. Some Models will only let you move in a spiral pattern out from the center.
  2. Your tv may or may not have different convergence modes that you will have to adjust, if your tv is a hi-def you will need to converge the hi-def mode as well, With the cross hatch up you can press the [DISPLAY MODE] key to switch between the different modes. Make sure you save your changes before changing picture mode or your changes will be lost.
  3.    On tv's that have different screen modes, you can try to copy the settings from the full mode once you have saved the setting by pressing [MUTING] then [ENTER] . To do this select the "ALCP" mode then change the data to "01" then press [MUTING] then [ENTER] again. the data from the full mode is then copied to all other modes.

This procedure works for the "RA6" chassis, this procedure may be different in different models

                                                                        More Information

  1. Save changes often.
  2. The green crt is used to align the other two colors. If you need to get the grid straight, straighten up the green completely before adjusting the other colors. An overlay may be needed if the green is way off.
  3. After adjusting a point, you may throw another point out of convergence, Check for this.
  4. Start converging in the center and go out, don't start on the outside you will be fighting the convergence if you do.
  5. Avoid the tendency to adjust the worst point first, most likely one of the other smaller adjustments will get that badly converged point very close to where it needs to be. By adjusting that badly converged point first, you can throw off a well converged point somewhere else.
  6. If you are at the edge of the screen adjusting a point there, look at the opposite edge of the screen, you can throw a point off on the other side if you over adjust.

Happy-Norwood, just what you said is a very nice gesture indeed if you need assistance please leave a full model number of the set. as well as an e-mail that i can figure out what it is. Larry Dillon

The best advice I can tell you at this point is to go to tvrepairkits.com and order the complete convergence kit and the fluid change kit for your model of TV set, no need to search and order multiple parts from different sources and pay multiple shipping fees! The kit comes with original Sanyo STK ICÂ’S , not those cheap aftermarket or china made ICÂ’S full pictorial directions, the thermal paste, resistors, the correct Pico fuses, AND free live on-Line tech assistance in case you run into a problem with the repair. They ship out 2 to 3 day Priority mail, the next day in most cases,

Thank you much for the quick reply. You guys are the best! I am heading to tvrepairkits.com right now. I will let you know how it all goes. Having worked with 'on board' computers in my field of Transport Refrigeration, I am kind of excited to dive inside this big tv to see what makes it tick, or tock for that matter. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

"Fear the true God and keep his commandments. For this is the whole obligation of man." (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

I'm can't seem to ajust the convergance on my kp57hw40.I have replaced the IC's and the pico fuses.I have a picture and sound but the picture is shaped like a bow tie and the the colors are off up to 3inches at the outside of the screen.I tried to manualy ajust with the remote according to instructions on this site but no luck. I can move the curser around but can't seem to set anything. Is there anyone that can share a service manual with me. I really need the tec info to go any further with repair.any help would be great thanks sam4.0

Then you still have problems, if it is working correctly you will not have that extreme bowtie effect. Check your soldering, connections, it is an issue with the repair and not adjustement.

Thanks for the info. I desoldered the parts from a board that was said to be good, I bought it from a good sorce but it arived with the upper right corner broke in shiping.maby I'll get new parts from mcm.Is the service manual avalible? I would really like to know the values for this board so I can better check my repairs.thanks sam4.0

Larry, thanks for all of your help to people here, first of all.

I've been researching for my Sony KP-51WS500 - a picture of the convergence screen is my profile pic. I am about to order parts (two STK 392-570's from Acme in Orlando, plus other various), but before I do, I have a few last-minute questions.

1) Given the screen shot, is this probably what this set needs?

2) How many pico fuses and resistors should I get, or could I safely buy these locally after the fact when I know I really need them? (Could I test ahead of time?)

3) Should I be worried about any high-voltage dangers in doing this repair?

4) Could I re-confirm convergence chip failure in the service menu somehow prior to ordering parts?

Thanks again for your help!

Larry, thanks... I realize your ability to help people individually is limited!

One important thing I have learned recently (for others in my situation) is: "If all of the adjustments for R,G,& B, both horizontal and vertical have an effect, your problem is somewhere other than the output ICs."

(This from the excellent guide at http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/diy-repair-maintenance/5600-crt-b... )

Word/experience/advice from other experts here on the above enumerated questions is more than welcome!

If the video looks warped, 3D, or has a ghost like image the the problem is more the convergence chips. This is a common failure on Sony sets. There are two STK392-560 chips, several pico fuses on the G and D boards, and some convergence resistors that all need to be replaced. You can get the parts online - but be careful not to buy the generic chips. The generics will burn up quickly or wont work at all when you put them in. Only get genuine Sanyo STK392-560 chips. These are not cheap - cost about 24.00 - 32.00 each right now from MCM, Acme, BDent, etc but they are worth it. You can also get complete kits including all the parts and instructions from http://www.TvRepairKits.com

Make sure you check all the picos on the G and D boards for continuity. Also - after powering on for the 1st time its not unusual for a pico to blow again. So if one checked out earlier - but the video is still distorted - check them again.

Hope this helps,

Ed

HI, This tv was stopped after replacing the fuse feeding ic convergence of the unit became operational but with exess of red, all the colors its work but the red is more strong, when I remove all the color I cant get the black and white, how to adjusting to get black and white
SONY 53XBR45 Videoscope

there is an article I put together to tell you how to do thisit is under recent articles on the home page.!!!!
Larry Dillon.

We followed the directions on the orginal post. Thank you they were clear.

We are looking at the grid screen PJE FDIS 00 in white and 00 in green. There is no cursor. What did we do wrong?

It is a Sony KP-51WS500.

you probably need to recheck all of the resistors as even if they looks good they can still be bad and there are 2 pico fuses on the G Board!!also download the service manual from the technicians corner from the home page under the resources tab.
Larry Dillon

DeAndra,

Try pressing the "9" key when you get into the PJE menu - that should give you the convergence cursor! (I made this same mistake.) I think 1, 3, 4, 9 and the direction arrows are the operative keys here (check docs for more info). Good luck!

Hi,

Hi,

Thank you for posting the "9" to get the coursor going. I have 2 questions>
1) why are my horizontal lines curved
2) I can not adjust the green lines.

Oh ok I guess I have to order the STK392-560 chips, pico fuses and resistors. I think I can do the job so I'll give it a try.

I have a Sony rear projector big screen and now have a red hue only on the right side of the screen, tried fixing the convergence on it and it does not seem to work or matter what I do, any suggestions?

sony kp-wt500 has red shadows on letters and numbers..how do i get to service mode?? do i need to adjust the voltage for the red? if so turn it up or down? please help me! thanks

i ended up fixing the convergence on my kp46wt500 by pressing display,5,volume +,power.(while off) then pushing 3 until large green fonts appear(must say service in top right) 9 brought up the cursor,3 changed colors, and 6 changes patterns. i lined it all up and got rid of all ghost images without buying anything. before you buy new stk ic's give it a try.it was pretty hard to just get to a convergence screen, they made it to where you would have to have a repair person to do this if you have no tech smarts.oh yeah after you line it up press mute then enter to save( i saved like 3 times to make sure)

no no you should Never try to adjust the convergence when it goes out as the adjustments are only when the components age and when the convergence drifts just a little bit,The best advice I can tell you at this point is to go to TV repair kits.com and order the complete convergence kit for your model of TV set, click on here please: http://www.tvrepairkits.com/xcart/home.php?partner=larry

well in my case it was aged and the convergence drifted a little.nothing went out i guess. I had 20 people tell me to spend all kinds of cash, then i fixed it myself for FREE! I just think some people work for tvrepairkits.com and want you to immediately buy the kit to fix everything.i didnt buy the kit and its perfect again!!! Don't act like I'm stupid Mr. expert, you would've paid alot of money for your cool kit to get the picture i see right now for free.have fun purchasing your kits before you even know whats wrong people!

But if you simply adjusted the set WHAT do you think made it go out of alignment it does not fix itself my friend. If it went out once it will go out again!!!!! cannot say when but dollars to doughnuts it will!!!!!!!!! you jusr delayed the inevitable
Larry Dillon

Question: I have a SONY 51" rear projection that I have moved to different apaprtments/houses twice now, and I'm getting ready to move it into my basement. I'm sure that things got bumped out of alignment durring the moves. In fact, I noticed the edges of the picture were cut off after the first move. It's not too bad and i've lived with it just fine for a couple years, but does this sound like something I could adjust in the convergence menu? Maybe with the green cursor?

When adjusting convergence do you do it sitting right up against the TV, or do you do it sitting on your couch?

I noticed that you mentioned an "overlay," is this to get the grid exactly where it needs to be? I assume I couldn't pick one ov these up somewhere on my own could I?

Thanks!

yes the overlays should be available from an authorized Sony parts retailer BUT
NEVER EVER MESS WITH the green!!! ALWAYS move the red and the blue into the green!!!!! Like I said never mess with the GREEN!!!!
Larry D.

So is there a way to get the edges of my picture back?

I have found that convergence is more like an art than a science. To get the edeges to converge you usaly need to adjust a convergence point away from the edge. like one adjustement point to the left or right (depending on the side you are working with) of the edge adjustment will affect the edge convergence quite allot. Usaly the points on the edge will have trouble converging vertically. (i mean a vertical move even though it is a horizontal line you are converging, i know that is confusing, trying to explain as accuratley as i can)

That makes about as much sense as I think it could. LOL

Basically I read in one fo the posts that the green adjust the geometry of the picture, which since I have x" cut off on one side and x.5" cut off on the other seems like where I need to be looking to fix that, no?

Let's back up here, you said the picture looks "Cut off" ? on one side. convergence does not adjust a cut off picutre, That is a diffrent gemetric issue like size and width which is in a diffrent section of the setup menu.
height, with, trap, pin are adjustments not DIRECTLY related to convergence, althoguh after adjustment it may require touchup on the convergence. Before adjusting anyting make sure you have the correct picture shape selected on your remote, do you know there is a zoom, zoom wide, normal, full mode on these televisions. Could it be that you are in a mode that will cut off the edges like zoom ?

So in theory I could use the same keystroke on the remote to get into the menu, then navigate my way to this part? Then it be just like changing the settings on a CRT computer monitor say?

99.9% sure I'm not in one of those modes. I will double check though. It's not horrible like it would be in one of those. It's like if you watch say ESPN and they throw up the pilars with ESPN on them, on one side you can read all of ESPN, but on the other the top of the letters are cut off (word is sideways rembeber so the top ot the words are the side of the picture).

Am I going down the rigth path?

Now you are on the right track, this is not a convergence issue it is a geometric issue. Try to change picutre modes first! because some of them will cause what you are decribing. Your computer monitor has simple geometric controls, your tv as very complex geometric controls, key, linarity,l pin r pin (many others). So if it is only a width problem only change the width, you can get into allot of trouble with geometric controls if you don;t know EXACTLY how they will affect the picture. with convergence it is easyer because you see the point you are working on, but in geometric controls the control you need to adjust may not be so easy to identify by the shape of the picture because it could be a combination of several geometric issues. Plus the picutre mode(normal, wide, wide zoom ect...) will change how it will look when adjusting this.

and is it a decent assumption that moving the TV up and down 3 flights of stairs and across town twice could cause this issue? In my head I had always pictured that the bulbs/guns whatever they are in the bottom probably got jolted off target by the bumpiness of the fine Cleveland roads. However, convergence never was a huge issue (slightly off I'm sure but still a very good picture) so maybe they wouldn't have.

I shoudl probably leave it alone so I don't mess it all up, but I'd liek to at least get in there and take a look at it.

Thanks for all your help so far!

No, not geometry, that would requre all three crt's to have moved the same distance, jolting may cause the neck rings to move if they were loose, this would cause convergence issues, not what you are explaining.

Little tutorial, BULB - NO. These do not have bulbs in them. They are knowen as CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) There are three of them (red, green, blue). Gun references a part inside the tube that emmits the electron beam. When you adjust these controls you are not adjusting the gun or the tube, you are adjusting how the YOKE (a coil of wire wrapped around the neck of the crt) deflects the beam with alternating magnetic field. Bigscreen tv's have complex yokes that also support seperate coils for convergence.

Good information!

Messing with the geometry should fix my issue as described though, no?

thanks again!

if you are not in the wide or zoom modes that will cause this, it will be a geometry issue, you need to determine what the problem is and wich control to adjust, are both sides cut off equally ? is it off to the left or right? All tv's have some overscan, that is the edge of the picture is off the edge just a little. This is normal and helps clean up the edge of the picture that can look bad. If you lower the width till you see the edge of the picture scan you then can adjust the centering to get it equal distance from each edge, then adjust the width till it is just slightly larger than the viewing area. When you bring the picture in where you see the edge you may see other destortions. Unless you know how to adjust this out don't try you will make it worse. Just adjust it out past the distortions. wich should be very shallow into the picutre.

You may need to adjust the convergence after this, Just a touch up not too much.
What model do you have? i will get the minomic names used in this set.

this generally happens when people try to adjust the convergence before you replace the convergence ic's then it becomes a nightmare trying to make the convergence correctly!!
Larry D.

I think i know what you are trying to say Larry.

If he had a previous convergence repair and attempted to adjust and save the convergence before the repair, this can cause a width problem from over steering the convergence.

If that was the case then after the geometry adjustments the tv should be ok, the only side effect is that the convergence ic's will be working harder than they should. This seems to only be a problem with Hitachi and Pioneer televisions. If you over steer the convergence to get it correct you will cause the convergence ic's to blow within a week of replacement because of over driving them. I have not seen this to be a problem with sony.

Once i get to work today i will look this up for you.

ok i looked at the manual, and you can change the width, try this it is safe to do, but if the width does not fix it then you need to center it, and on this set there is no digital centering per say, it is done with the rings on the neck of the crt, the rings closest to the yoke, the other rings are for dot shape and other adjusments. If you start changing the centring rings without understanding of how this works you can end up with a mess too hard to explain adjusting these is again more of an art. i remember the first one i did and it took forever because it does not behave like you think it would.

Anyway the adjustment you need is

Catagory:DEF2
Item: HSIZ
use the 2,5 keys to change the catagory
use the 1,4 keys to change the item
use the 3,6 keys to change the width (data)
press (muting) key then (enter) key to save your changes

Awesome! Thanks!

I looked in there a little last night just to see what was what. This will make more sense to me when I follow these steps but...when i pulled up the grid I saw double thick lines at the top and bottom, I assume there are these same lines on the left and right and those should be at the edge of the screen?

I have a Sony KP-51HW40. In 1080 mode the image is OK. Not perfect but ok. I get a little ghosting on the left. In 480 (regular TV or VCR, or VCD) the image is quite bad. I have had his problem in the past and a repair guy game and fixed the convergence. I am now following instructions provided on this thread and am stuck with a few questions:

Once I am in the fine convergence mode (hit 9 key) I can then move the cursor using the 1 and 4 keys. But what do I do when I move them? I hit the joystick button twice but nothing really happens.

Am I missing a step?

ok depending on the remote you have. If you have the type that has the four arrow buttons with a center button, you press the center button to "anchor" the cursor then use the arrow keys to adjust that point. The cursor will turn the color of crt you are adjusting. Press the center button again to return the cursor to white then move it to the next location.

Ah! ok. I have the kind that is a joystick. So I can press to click and tilt to move.

But I get the idea. So I will try this now.

Thanks.

As a follow up, it all worked great. Except I could not find the menu option to save to all formats. So I have to set the convergence for each format, for example 480 at Full, Wide, Wide Zoom etc. But teh results are amazing. I had forgotten how good the images used to be.

my cursor never showed up do u know how to solve that

Hi I have a Sony KP-46WT510 Rear Projection Tv that is having a few convergence issues myself. It seems the red or green is out of place. I can adjust the red and blue manually getting them to line up with the green arrows across almost the entire tv except for a large portion of the left side of the screen and a small portion of the right side of the screen. Are the green arrows suppose to be able to move because i cant move mine only line up the red and blue with the green?

I do not have the original remote and have been doing it from the main menu on the front of the tv. Thanks!
