Sony Convergence Procedure

Sony Convergence Procedure

Document version 1.1

( I Will update as needed and if errors are found, please let me know and I will issue an update)

Changing values in the service mode can cause your tv to malfunction, this text will only explain how to adjust the factory convergence. Before changing any other values make sure you know what you are doing.

To Enter Service mode With the tv off and the remote in tv mode, press the following keys:[DISPLAY],[5],[VOL UP(+)],[POWER]

The tv will now display "3D-COMB" in the upper left hand corner.

Press the [2] or [5] keys to move up or down through the adjustment categories until you see "PJE" in the upper left hand corner(note that the letters will change to a different font).

Next press the [6] key twice, this will bring up a grid (crosshatch) without video behind it. When I refer to the [CENTER] key, It is located in the middle of the directional arrow keys on the remote.

When cursor is white, you can move it to an adjustment point using the arrow keys. Once you press the [CENTER]  button, the cursor will lock to that adjustment point. It will now change to one of three colors ; Red, Green, or Blue. The color of the cursor will be the color you are adjusting. To change the color press the [3] key only when the cursor is locked to an adjustment point, pressing the [3] key when you are in navigation mode will have no effect. By Pressing the [CENTER] button again will switch you back to navigation mode.

To save your changes press the [MUTING] then [ENTER] keys on the remote.

Important notes

Not all Sony's will function in the exact same way that I outlined above. Below I have made notes of the differences.

  1. Some Models will only let you move in a spiral pattern out from the center.
  2. Your tv may or may not have different convergence modes that you will have to adjust, if your tv is a hi-def you will need to converge the hi-def mode as well, With the cross hatch up you can press the [DISPLAY MODE] key to switch between the different modes. Make sure you save your changes before changing picture mode or your changes will be lost.
  3.    On tv's that have different screen modes, you can try to copy the settings from the full mode once you have saved the setting by pressing [MUTING] then [ENTER] . To do this select the "ALCP" mode then change the data to "01" then press [MUTING] then [ENTER] again. the data from the full mode is then copied to all other modes.

This procedure works for the "RA6" chassis, this procedure may be different in different models

                                                                        More Information

  1. Save changes often.
  2. The green crt is used to align the other two colors. If you need to get the grid straight, straighten up the green completely before adjusting the other colors. An overlay may be needed if the green is way off.
  3. After adjusting a point, you may throw another point out of convergence, Check for this.
  4. Start converging in the center and go out, don't start on the outside you will be fighting the convergence if you do.
  5. Avoid the tendency to adjust the worst point first, most likely one of the other smaller adjustments will get that badly converged point very close to where it needs to be. By adjusting that badly converged point first, you can throw off a well converged point somewhere else.
  6. If you are at the edge of the screen adjusting a point there, look at the opposite edge of the screen, you can throw a point off on the other side if you over adjust.

I have a 55in sony grand wega kdf55wf655, the standby light was blinking 6 times which after some research it pointed to the thermal fuse, I replaced that and yet it is still blikning 6 times (standby)... It has no power, sound, audio... What else can I do?? The tv is almost ready to get thrown in the road!! So much for a SONY tv that's 5 1/2 years old.. Good thing it had the 5 year warranty!! Thanks Sony!!!

Hi, I have a Phillips 46PP9302. It had a convergence problem before(so said the person i got it from) and it was repaired, that was a year ago. They gave me the tv and the only thing they told me was that

sounds ;like you need a convergence repair. The best advice I can tell you at this point is to go to tvrepairkits.com and order the complete convergence kit for your model of TV set, no need to search and order multiple parts from different sources and pay multiple shipping fees! The kit comes with original Sanyo STK ICÂ’S , not those cheap aftermarket or china made ICÂ’S full pictorial directions, the thermal paste, resistors, the correct Pico fuses, AND free live on-Line tech assistance in case you run into a problem with the repair. They ship out 2 to 3 day Priority mail, the next day in most cases, what is your e-mal pleas

When doing my convergence my red color will not move in the positive direction. It will only move in the negative direction making it impossible to align this color. Do you have a solution?

My convergence is only off on the sides of my screen. It gets worse the closer to the edges it gets. Ive checked all picos and no blown fuse. Do you suggest changing stk362-560? If so who should i buy a reliable pair from?

The one of your ic's are still bad or you have a bad solder connection or one of the yellow fuses are blown on the d board.

Hey ,I have a Sony kp-57ws500 tv.I have replace the two STK convergence chips, I try to converge the color grids in the service mode sa per your info ..but I can't get any of the lines to move..Can you help Me solve this problem...TechMan?
Danny

make sure you plugged in all plugs, missing plugs, blowen fuses will cause this. Check the two fuses on g board if your set has a g board. some of these have all of the power source located on the d board.

I installed the stk chips perfectly checked all the fuses and only had to change out one. Now I try to set the convergence but I cant seem to get the colors to move, the horizonal and vertical numbers change but the colors stay exactly where there at, any ideas???

JerryW you still have a physical problem, either the plugs are not in, or something was missed during the repair, solder, another fuse. Without actually working on the set myself. it is hard to say. it could be any of the things i mentioned above, possibly other things i have not thought of, but the things i said above are the most common.

What does the solder connections look like on the chips you replaced?? a close up picture would be a nice tool to check out.
Larry D AKA (techman)

make sure you have continuity on all of the pico fuses around the IC'S

Larry,
I have a samsung 65 inch. I replaced the convergence board because I did the test as you once suggested, by unplugging the board and the set turned on with sound. But now there is like red lettering/marks down the middle of the screen. Itook a pic look at my profile. any idea what that could be???

it looks like something is in the way of the projection, check behind the screen for dangling wires or something like that.

i know its a VERY strange pattern,
I checked had the back open. Lenses are clear. Checked the mirror looks clean. Screen doesnt look like marked or anything either.

l;ook down inside the tubes and see what is in the tube is there anything floating around that you can see?
Larry Dillon

looked down the tubes all looked good. This may help though. I covered the red lense, then covereed the blue one, still there. when I covered teh green lens, the lines went away. what could that be??

Look down into the green tube with the set on, this could be phosphor burn. See If the lines appear on the surface of the green tube, you donÂ’t have many options as to what is wrong, it is either something in the way of the screen like cobwebs hanging down (very common) or wires in the way, something in the tube, or phosphor burn. That is about all it can be.

If it is phosphor burn you need a new green tube.

let me ask if I can do this, because it looks so broken up(the lines) almost circuitry wierdness. Can i swap/switch the blue connector with the green connector on the convergence board, since thats what I replaced to get it working again? Just to see if the lines then move to the blue light? or can that break something?

no that is not a good idea but as long as you do not leave it there it should not cause any damage but to be 100% sure I would say no don't do it!!!!!!
Larry Dillon

take a more straight on picture of your problem with a completely white raster, and a green raster displaied on the screen. (pure green or pure white screen)

hey Guys. Doesnt look good. I decided to really look down into the gree ntube and saw the lines. Then took off the adjuster I guess you can call it. and here is the picture of the green lens. Looks totally scratched somewhow? Soooo Is it a light replacement? a whole green assembly? not even sure how that could get scratched like that?

That is a good picture of phosphor burn, the tube is bad. a new tube is about 200-300 dollars. How this pattern can happen is if the tv was turned on even for an instant with one of the yokes unplugged from the board. That is what it looks like to me. When repairing projection tv i always double check the yoke connections, if one of them is off, it will destroy the tube instantly.

ok, I will try to find one. Question, this is where voltage scares me. Do I have to worry about voltage on the tubes at all? Or am I safe with unconnecting, unscrrweing that assembly safely?
Thanks

you have to be aware of the red high voltage lead off of the side of the tube. you need to disconnect this from the distribution block that it plugges into, pull the boot back and press then twist to release the wire, I may beable to get the tube for you, give me the model number. Replacing this tube is somewhat involved thougth! with the risk of dammage if done wrong. I just did one of these yesterday to a blue tube. also include the serial number, on many sony sets they changed tubes in the middle of production so a diffrent tubes may be needed depending on serial number. I work for a tv shop and i am sony authorized, i can get any available sony part. Some tubes are not available anymore though.

btw if the set is unplugged and the discharge circuit is working right the red lead will not have any voltage on it, but after removial of the red lead touch it to the metal chass to make sure it is dead. you need to be careful and if you do this it is at your own risk!

well the part number on the green tube is P16LXL00HHA (U)

i need the sony part number that is the man part number, The tube is an assembly from sony, that tube can come on many diffrent assemblies, the tube cannot be seperated from the assembly by the tech, when you buy the tube you get a new assembly. The lenz is not part of the assembly. The model and serial is required to get the correct assembly for your tv.

Samsung HCN653W

Serial number: 39ZWC50324A

i was thinking this was a sony, sorry, but we are samsung authorized as well, i will get back to you with a cost. i will pm you with this later today.

yep, already did the convergence board. I mean I got a nice screen besides the lines now on the green tube.

NEED HELP PLEASE SOMEONE

I have A Sony 46inch kp-46wt500 and I spilled that liquid stuff inside the bulbs all over the boards (Very stupid I know) I took em out and cleaned them best I could but when I turned the tv back on it sounds like a tv coming on then this part on the board looked like a little fire on it for about 2 or 3 seconds then went out.the picture shows what the part looks like that was on fire but there is no burn smell or marks anywhere. Now the tv just sounds like it shuts it self off after a few seconds then the light blinks eight times. Is there anything I can test to find the problem ? Please someone help !

That liquid stuff is ethylene glycol basically engine coolant. since you started the tv with the liquid on the board, you have caused extreme harm, if even one drop get on a board while energized it will ruin the board. Only option is to replace the board, and the tube, the tube cannot be separated from it's mount on sony's you will never get it back together correctly, when you replace the tubes you get a new one sealed to its bracket. The expense to repair at this point is going to be more than the tv is worth. Probably 3 -4 hundred in parts.

larry
How much would a tube cost around ?

hey guys, so if I do replace that green tube, that my convergence will probably be off, and you need special tools to fix that? Because the convergence board really just does minor adjustments. True ?? Is it worth fixing??

check your pm -- No special tools but you need to adjust the yoke position and the tabs on the back of the yoke, usaly once you adjust the yoke rotation and the tabs the convervgence is realy close. if it were mine i would have to consider maby it would be better to put the money into a new tv. For me it takes a couple of hours to replace and set the tube up. But being a novice it could take much longer.

Were you able to find a green replacement tube? Also really curious, I mean the tube lights up, and looks ok, is there a way to replace just the green lens inside? replace the fluid and be done?

no it is not a lenz it is the phospher, only a tube replacemnt will fix this and yes i have infor for you, please check your personal messaages.

Hello friend, this screen was with the 3 tubes leaking coolant, the diaphragm
was already old and cracked and holes, the PCI flyback that lies just beneath the center of the tubes were all wet by the liquid, then everything was clean and exchanged diaphragms, when trying to turne on the unit, the standby star blinking, the TSH was short and replace it after that the unit became operational, but for those who think that everything was fine, I was wrong because the convergence was just a mess I tried to adjust, all 3, red, green and blue responds to the ring of convergence, but the red is shaking this is strange and a little below the green and blue, not reaching the center and connect the generator bars than i could visualize better the problem, after select the colors in the generator, seems the red is out of sync frequency, a full screen red but with dark lines from top to bottom on one side of the screen to another, went straight in the drivers, checked supply voltages and resistors in STK nearby, and everything was ok, so I decided to replace the STK, but still the same, does anyone have any idea, any help will be welcome.

SONY KP53XBR45

I am not sure i understand all that you said, but if you go into convergence mode (display(5)(vol up)(tv power) and you can get the convergence to move all three tubes in all directions it is not a classic convergence issue. The fluid on your pc board may be the issue, i would remove and re-wash the board down to make sure there is not even one drop of fluid on the board. If there is it will cause the tv to malfunction. Remember to check the crt neck modules for fluid on them. You mentioned the "Ring of convergence" if you are talking about the rings on the neck of the crt, they will always respond even if the convergence circuit is not functioning.

What is "Out of sync frequency" ? i don't understand what you are trying to tell me. If you see a full red screen without video on the red crt you may have an issue with the video driver to that crt. if you get a 5 blink shutdown this maybe the case.

Sorry, I mean that, after I connect the generator bars, I could visualize better the problem, after select the colors in the generator, seems the red is out of synchronism frequency,(timing) a full screen red but with dark lines from top to bottom on one side of the screen to another, went straight in the drivers, checked supply voltages and resistors in STK nearby, and everything was ok, so I decided to replace both STK, but still the same, any help will be welcome.

Larry,
I have replace all of the IC's and pico fuses. I notice that the red and green IC does not give off any heat and I am unable to adjust those colors horizontally. The blue IC does give off heat and I am able to adjust horizontal and vertical with no issues. Is it possible that the IC is bad, or do you think there is an other issue? I got the IC's from tvrepairkits so as you have stated in this thread they are the good ones.

How and where do you diconnect the 2 red Power wires to remove the d board from the TV. I have everything removed and the board out except for those 2 wires. I am taking it in to have new ICs put in.

Hi, what is de procedure to ajust de sony KP53XBR45 convergence?

that is fully described in the factory service manual. easy to follow the service manual is located in the technicians corner download section for free here at techlore for our members!!
Here is the link for the service manual

Wow....I was a field engineer for 23 years before becoming disabled. Worked on office product's for IBM, Copiers, scanners, digital printers, etc. for Kodak, X-Ray for G.E., and was Electronic Warfare Tech in Navy Reserve. So I have had experience with practically every type of support....from publications, to Tech Specialists, and through my experience I learned that anything available that can help in diagnosing and repairing is a blessing!
LARRY, I want to thank you. I wish there were a way to let you know personally, but this will have to do. I bought the Sony 51

First of, I would like to express my appreciation for the thorough info and help that is given on this site. It appears to be very helpful to all concerned. However, I did not see my particular problem listed here yet.
My problem is with a Philips rear projection 51" model 51 PW9363. It has started to show a bright white area around any words that appear on the screen. Also, the color has started to fade and become quite dull. I have read that changing the coolant in the tubes will solve these problems quite effectively. Two questions then: 1.) Is this a task a 'handy kinda guy' should take on?
and, 2.) Will it really solve the problems I have?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide with this.

George
