Sony Convergence Procedure

Document version 1.1

( I Will update as needed and if errors are found, please let me know and I will issue an update)

Changing values in the service mode can cause your tv to malfunction, this text will only explain how to adjust the factory convergence. Before changing any other values make sure you know what you are doing.

To Enter Service mode With the tv off and the remote in tv mode, press the following keys:[DISPLAY],[5],[VOL UP(+)],[POWER]

The tv will now display "3D-COMB" in the upper left hand corner.

Press the [2] or [5] keys to move up or down through the adjustment categories until you see "PJE" in the upper left hand corner(note that the letters will change to a different font).

Next press the [6] key twice, this will bring up a grid (crosshatch) without video behind it. When I refer to the [CENTER] key, It is located in the middle of the directional arrow keys on the remote.

When cursor is white, you can move it to an adjustment point using the arrow keys. Once you press the [CENTER]  button, the cursor will lock to that adjustment point. It will now change to one of three colors ; Red, Green, or Blue. The color of the cursor will be the color you are adjusting. To change the color press the [3] key only when the cursor is locked to an adjustment point, pressing the [3] key when you are in navigation mode will have no effect. By Pressing the [CENTER] button again will switch you back to navigation mode.

To save your changes press the [MUTING] then [ENTER] keys on the remote.

Important notes

Not all Sony's will function in the exact same way that I outlined above. Below I have made notes of the differences.

  1. Some Models will only let you move in a spiral pattern out from the center.
  2. Your tv may or may not have different convergence modes that you will have to adjust, if your tv is a hi-def you will need to converge the hi-def mode as well, With the cross hatch up you can press the [DISPLAY MODE] key to switch between the different modes. Make sure you save your changes before changing picture mode or your changes will be lost.
  3.    On tv's that have different screen modes, you can try to copy the settings from the full mode once you have saved the setting by pressing [MUTING] then [ENTER] . To do this select the "ALCP" mode then change the data to "01" then press [MUTING] then [ENTER] again. the data from the full mode is then copied to all other modes.

This procedure works for the "RA6" chassis, this procedure may be different in different models

                                                                        More Information

  1. Save changes often.
  2. The green crt is used to align the other two colors. If you need to get the grid straight, straighten up the green completely before adjusting the other colors. An overlay may be needed if the green is way off.
  3. After adjusting a point, you may throw another point out of convergence, Check for this.
  4. Start converging in the center and go out, don't start on the outside you will be fighting the convergence if you do.
  5. Avoid the tendency to adjust the worst point first, most likely one of the other smaller adjustments will get that badly converged point very close to where it needs to be. By adjusting that badly converged point first, you can throw off a well converged point somewhere else.
  6. If you are at the edge of the screen adjusting a point there, look at the opposite edge of the screen, you can throw a point off on the other side if you over adjust.

I picked up a Sony KP-51ws510 HD TV for a song that looked fine but had a convergence problem. I have a great deal of electronics background (not in TV) but in my distant past have converged analog TV's. I thought I could probably do this. I first read the article and blogs (now closed to comment) on

Hi - I just paid for the repair of a convergence problem on my Sony KP-53XBR35 projector TV. Two fuses and 2 IC's were replaced and the center picture is now fine but the screen edges are still a problem. The repair tech said that this was the best that the set could be repaired. Any other suggestions on how the TV convergence could be adjusted? Thanks

Hi...I had the exact same set with convergence problems as well as it's big brother the KP61XBR with convergence problems as well. I replaced the IC chips and fuses in both boards and it fixed the problem...almost. The edges were off on one and the corners off on the other. I got the service manual and the procedure to takle the job of manually adjusting the convergence. You can't do it in service mode. The board is located in the front under the screen in between the speakers. You will see about 90 pots/dials. Each row is for a certain color and each pot adjust a certain parameter like the "bow" or "hue" sub bow etc. You will need a DVD still of a checkboard set on pause. You have to do each color seperate. You need to place a towel over the red and blue lamps and adjust the green checkerboard perfect. Then place the towel over the blue and now match the red checkerboard to the green. When that's done you do the same for blue too green. It is a major pain in the ass. If you have alot of time and patience and knowledge then go for it. Always start from the center and work your way out. You will find that you can get the lower half of the t.v. perfect then try to fix the upper half and end up ruining the lower half. Make minor adjustments and follow the order in the service manual or you're going to really screw up the convergence. It took me about a month, 2 hours at a time every day trying to get my 61 inch XBR watchable. And you have to do it lying down on your side with a small screwdriver looking at the screen 6 inches from your face. It will never be perfect. I ended up sacrificing a corner to make the rest of the t.v ok.

Healy55 - Wow - sounds like a tedious and almost impossibe task! I appreciate your quick answer and do not look forward to the labors ahead to get it in better working order. I may leave the set alone as the center is fine and only the left side has noticible convergence problems. The right side is not very noticible at all. Thank again!!

Yea good decision.  If you try to fix the left side you will throw the right side off.  The best I could do is corner the convergence problem to the upper left (most unwatched area) then expand (stretch) all 3 colors up off the screen to hide it better.  But you sacrifice your upper screen.  Most noticiable when watching football and the upper scoreboard are cut off.  Anyway better than throwing the set out!

I have a 63 inch videoscope xbr. I have a picture but no sound. found out a series of buttons before and that fixed the problem. can not remember what i did before can anyone help please

I have a Sony KP-48S65 with convergence problems. I successfully got into service mode but unable to enter the convergence screen. What's the trick?

i tried the convergence adjustment and i never got any farther than the pressing 6 twice. i got the grid and nothing further.. can you help me or am i just going to have to replace the IC things?

you should NEVER try the adjustments without FIRST replacing the convergence IC"S

I have a KP-51HW40. The convergenece went out a few months ago and I adjusted it in the service mode following this threads procedure. Well, it went out again. This time though when I try to adjust it, the lines, no matter what color, won't move when I push the toggle (center) switch on the remote.

Should have replaced the convergence IC's before adjusting

Even if I was able to get it aligned?

Do you have an idea why it's not working this time?

Should I try to re-aling using the memory method?

Found the problem................5 amp pico fuse!!!

First thing that you should have checked after replacing the IC's

Larry Dillon said: First thing that you should have checked after replacing the IC's

IC's appear to be ok. Do you think I should replace them just to be safe, so I don't have to deal with them later?

YES!!! The pico fuses do not blow out for no reason, so replace the IC's

I have convergence problem on my KP57WV600. I want to replace STK ICs. Which two boards have this IC???

I have conversion problem on SONY projection tv KP57WV600. I want replace STK392 ICs. Would you please let me know which two boards have this IC?

Thanks,

Shahid

Only ONE board has the IC's, that most of the time one this make and model is the "D" Board. Now on the "D" as well as on the "G" board, "depending on the model", are small pico fuses That go bad when these ic's go bad. If you have never done this before there are two article's here on Techlore you should find and read first

THANKS LARRY. I did find with your help. ICs are on D board.

Shahid

GREAT!!! read those two articles before attempting. They will answer many questions or problems you may run into.

I read two articles carefully. I want to take the D board  out (SONY KP-57WV600) to replace the convergence ICs. Red fat wire running from D board trasnformer to flyback transformer and the other to focus transformer wouldn't come out. I don't want to force these out to avoid damage. Is there a trick to detach the red HT wires from the trasnformer of the D board? It is hard to replace the ICs while two red fat wires are still connected to their transformers.

Thanks,

Hi Larry,

I replaced two ICs STK392-570 (I arranged original from SANYO not a service part) on SONY KP-57WV600 without disturbing any wiring (red wires). I checked all PICO fuses with ohm meter by isolating each from the board. There are three fuses 3.15A under the fins of each heat sink. All connections were made properly with extra care.

When I turned on the TV, the picture is still the same (three dimensional with seperated colours). There is no difference at all. Are the fuses showing conductivity with ohm meter but not working properly in the circuit????

I have years of experience with GE in soldering. I have done a good job on soldering the ICs.

Please let me know what should I do now?

Thanks,

Shahid

There are two 5 Amp pico fuses on the G board that go bad also MAKE sure those are good also!!!

I'll check asap and let you know.

Thanks,

Shahid

Hi Larry, Thank you!!!

All credit goes to you. I fixed the problem. THANK YOU for your invaluable guidance. I just followed your instructions. TV is working and picture is excellent!!!

Shahid

I have a Sony KP-46WT500 and there is green outline on everything when I open the back and adjust the green tube or whatever its called it just makes it a lil better or worse, but when I cover up the green bulb completely then the picture looks almost perfect except for you can tell that its missin something,is that a convergance problem or the green bulb, does any know ?I really wanna fix it myself I have no money to send it to get repaired, the tech guys charged $90 to look at it and said it was a convergance problem but like I said when I cover just the green bulb it looks alot better, what do you think ?Tech guy also said it would cost $325 .

Did you try auto and manual focus on green??????

leave an e-mail and I will so you how to fix it for less then 100 bucks, IF you are

I tryed auto-focus and manual and no help but any way any help is appreciated,my email addy is tonyg27_504 at yahoo.com

Hi Larry,

I technician replaced teh Green Bulb on my KP-57HW40 TV 18 months ago. Now I am having picture problems. I notice that the red outline is about 3 cm away from teh main picture outline (more like a shadow). I did the

Hi, I have a KP51WS500 that I'm replacing the convergence IC's and pico fuses. On the board where the IC's go there is a pad missing for each IC. I don't remember burning them off. It is the same pad, 3rd from the left (or right depending on which way you're looking at it). Do these go to anything or am I ok? I have pics but I'm having trouble inserting them.

Also, the pico's are 3.15a can I use 3.5a? And the IC's are STK392-560 should I replace these with STK392-570?

Thanks

If you have never done soldering bofore then goodluck!!!!!

Replacement of IC needs good skill on soldering. It is fine work and needs good skills. Logically and scientifically, no two instances happen identical. If third pad is missing for both ICs identically then you are ok. You can also inspect visually to find out what happened because it is hard to believe you can damage only third position accidently on both. Use a magnifying lense.

Pico fuses: I would never use a fuse of higher rating. It is safe to use the right fuse 3.15a.

IC STK392-570 will work fine. I used the same and it worked fine. I also depends if it is genuine or cheap, selling for $ 5.99. Third position was normal like others under ICs on my system.

I hope this helps.

Shahid

I think I will go ahead and order the IC's (original Sanyo) and Pico's. Any idea where I can find a 3.15A Pico fuse? I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks

go to http://www.tristatemodule.com/storename/rivervalleyelectronicparts/dept/...

Here you can find PICO and IC. 570 is cheaper than 560. You can find PICO and IC on eBay as well but have to check carefully if they are selling genuine SANYO.

Shahid

You can also get complete convergence kits for just about any model of set, and if you do not see your model go to the contact us button, leave your make and model, they will make up a kit for you. all kits include ORIGINAL Sanyo IC's picos and the feedback resistors. no need to go to all different sites and pay out the nose for the shipping, all kits are shipped priority mail so you get them in most cases in two to three days and all include pictorial instructions I have used the kits many times and found them to be very reliable!

I have a Sony KP-61HS30 rear projection tv that has a convergence issue as well as bowing towards the middle of the screen on both the bottom and top. I have replace the IC's and 1 Pico 5 amp fuse on the G board, but still have an the issue. When I press the flash focus button there is no change. Do I need to go through the convergence procedure to get this thing to work first, or should I go ahead and replace all of the pico fuses? I used the multi-meter and checked them all, but did not remove one end of the fuse so I am not sure if that makes a difference. If I need to manually adjust the convergence through the service screen, can someone send me the manual.

you should never ever replace the picos without first replacing the convergence IC's or most likely you can cause more damage to the convergence circuit such as resistors or more or all of the picos are probably bad now because regardless what any one tells you fuses DO NOT BLOW by themselves or for no reason. the best advise I can give you is to go to tvrepairkits.com and get the convergence kit for your model as the kit includes all the picos, resistors, and original Sony IC's and also free live on-line tech assistance in case you run into a snag with the repair this way there is no need to go to 3 or 4 different part places and pay for shipping for each order

Larry,
I replaced both IC's and the 1 5amp pico fuse on the G Board. I got the repair kit from tvrepairkits. I am not sure if I just need to go through the manual convergence that is outlined in the service manual or just replace all of the pico fuses and then do the automatic flash focus. If I do need to do the manual convergence, do I need the service manual for the KP-61HS30 or can I use the procedure that is outlined in one of the blogs.

you can use the procedure in the blog but I will start to look for a service= manual for you. One question? how much alignment did you try to do to the convergence before you replaced the kit? but I need a e-mail address to send it to you!

I have not done any alignment prior to changing the IC's. I was watching the TV and then all of a sudden it went into this red/green/blue not aligning and bowing in the middle of the screen so I knew something blew. I only found out through this blog that there is a manual procedure as all I thought there was on my model is the automatic flash focus. Went to tvrepair kits, ordered for my model and replace 1 pico fuse on the G board and the IC's, then tried to hit flash focus but no luck. My email is [email protected].

Hello everyone,
I had a convergance problem with my Sony 46in that I posted earlier and I am just updating the status I am very happy that I fixed it,First I changed the Ic's,by the way I didnt have a desoldering tool so I just thought I would try compressed air in the can when I touched the solder it blew the solder off the board and worked good enough.Well after I installed the ic's of course the picture was still funny, then I adjusted the bulb things in the back, after that I then presses the autofocus and after about a minute or so to my amazement the picture was clear.Well the next day 3 skinny red, blue and green lines all the way across the top of the screen appeared which didnt bother me cuz they were out of the way of the picture mostly but still I was wondering what was going on,anyway the next day it was gone and has not came back yet.
Well I have another Sony 51in that I replaced just the Ic's on and it didnt help any,I bought some pico fuses but they dont look the same so I am very confused,is that the problem now ?If so does someone have a picture of a pico fuse and where it is located and how many ? Thanks.

I was able to align the vertical using the service menu, but not the horizontal which is causing the screen to bow towards the middle. I noticed that one of the heat syncs was not hot so I am wondering if that IC controls the horizontal positioning and I am not getting power to it. I am not sure if the pico fuse on the G board (there are 2) is causing the issue. I have replaced 1 that I thought was bad. None of the resistors look burnt on the D board, and I have tested all pico fuses on D board as well. Any suggestions?

KP51WS500

Okay, so I replaced the pico's (G&D boards)and the convergence IC's. Before, the red was out of whack. Now the red appears fine and the green and blue are out of whack. In the service grid I can adjust the green vertical but not horiz. I can't adjust the blue at all. The convergence IC on the outside does not even get warm. The inside IC will fry and egg. All of the pico's test good. Does the outside IC control blue/green and the inside IC controls red? I've checked all of the solder joints and they look fine. Any ideas?

Thanks

KP51WS500

Also, I did use origianl Sanyo IC's (570's), (6)3.15A pico's and (2)5A pico's. The original problem was with the red so I assume that one of the IC's I pulled out was good. I'm planning to pull out the IC that does not get hot and put in one of the IC's I pulled out. If this does not work I plan to pull the inside IC and put it in the outside slot. Is there anything else I can check on the board that would cause the outside IC to not get power? Since I have different problems from when I originally started (red was out; green/blue worked; now green/blue out; red works) I assume it is either something I did or the outside IC is bad.

KP51ws500

And, I just noticed that it appears I'm missing a wire. It is the first one I disconnected I think. I believe it is just a ground wire that connects to the metal frame above the boards through the little plastic yellow guide. There are (supposed to be?) two wires that connect here from the pictures I've seen. One is a small thin grey wire that connects to the D board. The other is black with a green connector and connects to the G board or at least goes through the wiring harness on the G board. This is the one I'm missing. Can anyone tell me where the other end of this wire goes? There is one just like it that connects to the metal plate on the bottom of the G board and the other end connects to the G board. Also, would this cause the outside IC to not get power?
Thanks

go to tvrepairkits, com and tell them are you sure that is all you need as those fuses very rarely go bad for no reason, unless the ic 's are deawing to much current,

The best advice I can tell you at this point is to go to tvrepairkits.com and order the complete convergence kit for your model of TV set, no need to search and order multiple parts from different sources and pay multiple shipping fees! The kit comes with original Sanyo STK ICÂ’S , not those cheap aftermarket or china made ICÂ’S full pictorial directions, the thermal paste, resistors, the correct Pico fuses, AND free live on-Line tech assistance in case you run into a problem with the repair. They ship out 2 to 3 day Priority mail, the next day in most cases GOOD LUCK!!!
