Television and Home Theater

Well, my problem is the power light comes on but no screen or sound.  It is in the finished basement, but it is colder than normal because outside has been below freezing for a week now.  Also had Dish network installed a few days before any problems.  Initially, it would come on but the picture wouldn't fill the screen and was fuzzy.  If you changed the channel, the picture would come in clear for half a second and then go back to the fuzzy, but now nothing.  I disconnected the dish and hooked up to a antenna but still nothing. 

I have a 2 year old Sony 23" flat screen LCD, and after a few minutes of being on it begins to switch from on to standby mode and back again, about every 10 seconds.  Anyone ever hear of this?  Could there be a tech bulliten or recall for this?  Any chance its the external power supply brick??

The above set has sound but no picture. I was told by a repair shop after electronic diagnosis that the set needs a transformer. Is that so or can it be repaired any other way? Thanx.
