Television and Home Theater

Help!  I recently bought a tv and dvd recorder, both with integrated Freeview tuners.  My TV signal at home is via analogue cable.  Both items auto-tuned to the main channels but no Freeview.  Told by shop that in order to get Frieview I'd need an appropriate aerial.  I don't want to sacrifice one for the other so can I use some sort of splitter so I can still receive the cable signal and the signal from a Freeview aerial?

We've recently resorted to watching our SONY television in the VIDEO mode, using our VCR as the tuner.

In this mode the green VIDEO message usually flashes on the screen and infrequently immediately after turning the set ON, there is only a narrow white line across the middle of an otherwise completely black background.

Other than these two or three possibly related issues, all is good.

I'm pretty electronics handy, so are there any suggestions, other than it's time to get a new set?

my sister tv .the picture is not clear the sound is good the back ground  is blery and on the right side of the sreen the picture at close up is blery the lft is not to bad the tv is a panasonic pt-53wx54j.
