Television and Home Theater

The set is not new, I'd say 5 years old or somewhere around there. It was occasionally showing signs of fault by not turning on every now and again. Finally it went out altogether.

When I plug it in the little tune goes off indicating the tv is turning on. Then the light goes out and it turns back off. Theres a smell coming from behind the tv that smells like electronic fire. 

I don't want to toss it, should I call someone or is there anything I can do?

I joined just the other day and thought I posted a msg, but I can't find it.  I just picked up my mits, because the guy said it would stay on for about 20 minutes then cut off with the red light coming on.  I haven't seen it do that yet, haven't had it on long enough.  But after getting it home, and plugging it in, I hooked up the dvd and saw a great, flickering picture.  Any idea what could be the problem?  Also, the second day I tried again, there was a message, hard to read with the flickering, that asked if I had replaced the bulb yet.

I am very discouraged.  We purchased a 46 inch sony bravia from our local sams club in April of 2008.  Recently we started having issues with the screen "folding over" on the left side, horizontal lines and the entire screen having a red tinge.  I took the set into a repair center and found out that the "panel" would have to be replaced at the least and possibly other items too, for a total of about $2500!  The televison cost around $2,000.  Unfortunately we did not purchase an extended warranty never thinking that we would have a major problem so soon.
