RCA 50" DLP Scenium

I have a RCA 50" DLP Scenium I've had since 12/07/2005 and let me tell you it's been one of the best tv's ever.  The picture quality and sound cannot be beat for the price I paid.  I've replaced the bulb twice and just after replacing it the second time, my wife and I were sitting watching one night and it just went off.  The lights on the front blink on and off approximately every five minutes and that's all it will do.  No sound, no picture, no nothing.  I unplugged it, waited a while, then plugged it back in but nothing would happen other than the lights in the front blinking as before.  I've called around and was told by one repairman that it could be a module inside the tv that costs around $500 from RCA and would be about $100 or more to change out.  However, this may not be the problem.  I've since bought a 55" Sony VVega (quality nowhere near as good and the sound is horendous).  Now my RCA I love dearly is sitting in a spare bedroom on the dresser, and I have no idea what to do with it.  I certainly don't want to have to spend $600+ to fix it as I've found a brand new one for $899 online!  I don't know if anyone can help, but I thought I would at least ask.  Thanks!!

Hey man, did you ever find a solution to your problem. It sounds like the same problem I have right now, and I cant find a soul that has a clue about it. If you can help, I would greatly appreciate it

I sure haven't. That tv's

I sure haven't. That tv's been sitting on a dresser in a spare room since it quit working. Depressing that it's sitting in there wasting like that. And a brand new bulb in it! If there was a repair shop close, I'd probably go ahead and pay just to see what's wrong with it, however the closes one is like an hour drive (I live in the sticks). I put the tv up for sale for a few hundred bucks (I paid right at $270 for the bulb in it), however nobody wants a tv that doesn't work. Can't say as I blame 'em.

Anyways, if you figure anything out at all, let me know.

Its actually lamp 256866. As far as the capacitors, will these be on the "board"? (I'm not very savy with the internal parts of electronics, but I'll catch on fairly quickly)

I unfortunately don't know a great deal about electronics and am fairly certain I'm not going to be working on this tv myself.  I've actually looked at the back of the unit and it looks like Fort Knox with the way it's put together.  I can change the bulb out myself, no problem.  However, changing/replacing capacitors?  I'm not even sure what a capacitor is (something to do with capacity?).  IF I can figure out where the power supply is (I'm assuming it's where the plug cord goes in the back of the tv??), and IF I can get it to where I can see it, then I could probably find these capacitors from someone, and replace them.  Of course, if it requires any sort of soldering then I'm pretty much gonna be screwed I think.  Don't own a soldering gun.

I will say I have a fairly high aptitude for figuring things out and if someone can be patient enough to walk me through the baby steps of how to do these things, I may be able to get this tv working again.

So.  Where do I find the power supply and how do I get it out?  Embarassed

this is what the capacitors will look like except it will say  1000uf 35V and can be blue or green or black in color  you can use 1000uf 50V to replace the 35V caps

this is the RCA LAMP Part

this is the RCA LAMP Part Number 269343

OR you can just replace the Lamp itself OSRAM # RPE022

Do any of you guys know where

Do any of you guys know where I can order a new power board (supply) from. I've looked on line, and I cant seem to find anywhere that sells them. I dont have a soldering gun, and this would be an easy fix for me.

VERY VERY hard to get Board's

VERY VERY hard to get Board's from RCA Some Boards RCA Don't Sell & can't get at all your best choice would be to send your Power Supply board to www.ptscorp.com and they should be able to check and repair if board is found to be defective . The Power supply may or may not be your problem theres other parts that can cause problems too like the Color wheel Or IC 401 on the DMD board "Are any of the 1000uf-35v caps Puffed UP on top ?"

clintsdog
They're all good. Everyone

They're all good. Everyone looks like the next (excluded size, of course).

Did replacing the capacitors

Did replacing the capacitors work? I have the HD50LPW175 as well and I believe it has the same problem. It went out kind of gradually though. It started taking it a while to power on. Sound would come on and then it would go off and front lights would blink five times. If I tried it over and over again it would eventually stay on. It's like it had to "warm up". It eventually just gave out and still just blinks five times when I try to power it up. Anyone know if the capacitors could be the fix?

Can you believe that my RCA

Can you believe that my RCA has been sitting on a dresser in a spare bedroom since I made the original post and still not working? I would LOVE to get this tv back working again, however I have no electonics expertise and have no idea how to change anything out. I've looked at the back of the tv a hundred times and am completely intimidated by the amount of work it seems it will take to do anything with it. But, to see it sit there wasting away and with a brand new lamp never used put in it. Anyone, anyone at all, have any way of providing some kind of instruction on what to do to try and fix it without paying what I originally paid for the thing?

I'd be happy to talk you

I'd be happy to talk you through what I did. But you need to know how to solder electronic components. You will need a soldering iron, solder, solder wick, 4 replacement caps (radio shack, 1000 micro farad 35V, $1.60 ea). A screwdriver/drill-driver with 2 torx bits, needle-nose pliers, wire cutters. Contact me if interested through my website at www.TheClearanceMan.com

Hey everyone,

Hey everyone,

When it lists the service model # as HD50LPW175YX12 G223C609A Is that the same as HD50LPW175? Or is it a sub-model #?

Thanks,

Greg

dude! We have the 50 rca hd

dude! We have the 50 rca hd scenium and love the tv. It is in our bedroom so we dont watch it much. I have it hooked up with an HDMI cord an the picture is fabulous. I think my lamp just went out because the lights on the panel blink 5 times, pause, and then blink 5 times again. However, this is not my first problem with the TV. Last year, if it has been that long, the color wheel went out. Sears came out to trouble shoot for $99. They gave me an estimate of over 900 to fix the TV. I told them to go to hell. I went on line ordered the color wheel myself from partstore.com, paid about 125 for the wheel. Called around until i found a tv repair man that would install. This cost me another 125 dollars. Many guys wont repair your tv unless they order the part as well, but times are tough, so if you call around enough you will find a guy who will do it. So basically, i saved myself 600 by going this route. Call sears for 99 have them give you a detail of what's wrong. Then do the research for those parts, and then find a guy to repair. If you arelocated anywhere near md, dc,or va. i can find the guys number and email it to you. Good luck, its time for me to go find a lamp replacement.

Hey guys. My RCA scenium is

Hey guys. My RCA scenium is back up and running. I replaced a couple of popped caps on the power supply and it powered right up. Thanks for all the help. Since then, I have acquired a new problem. The sound has gotten fuzzy. I thought that maybe the speakers blew so I replaced them and that didn't work. It's even fuzzy when the volume is turned all the way down. Anyone know what it could be? If so, how do I fix it? I have found a good website for replacement parts for any TV: www.discount-merchant.com If you know what it is, can you tell me what part I need from this website? Thanks guys

Is it always true that the

Is it always true that the power supply failure is characterized by popped caps that are visibly failed? My tv failed in a manner consistent with what folks are talking about here, but all of the caps on the PSU board appear in tact and firm.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Are the caps flat on top or

Are the caps flat on top or are they rounded? If they are rounded, then they are popped and need to be replaced. My caps were in-tact, but popped. I personally don't know what else it could be. Hope this helps a little.
