A friend of mine recently gave me a Thomson/RCA D34W20 34" TruFlat HD-Ready TV he was having trouble with. He couldn't get it to turn on anymore. Problem seems to be room temperature related. If the room was cool the tv wouldn't turn on. During the winter he put a space heater near it and it would reliably turn on and off. Finally this summer it just stopped turning on. Rather than taking it in to have it looked at he was just going to junk it. I brought the TV home (about an hour drive in 90 degree weather in the open trunk of my car) When I initially brought it home and I plugged it in to my surprise the green "on" indicator light came right on I heard the initial power up surge kick and the TV came on with no problem. We watched it all evening, it has a great picture. That evening I successfully turned it off and turned it back on again without any problem. However the next morning it was doing the same thing my friend told me it was doing.
Symptoms: When I press the on button or use remote the green "on" light will come on turn off about about three times and then stops trying to turn on. It sounds like the power supply doesn't even attempt to surge on. My inclination is this will be a simple fix... (since it seems to be room temperature related possibly cracked solder joints.
Does this sound like a good starting point? I have done a cursory look through the manuals... and am actually looking forward to this project. Perhaps after wards I'll take up TV repair as a hobby.
My background: I was an electronic warfare technician in the navy and currently a civilian technican for the Department of Defense. I have current certifications in J-STD-001 Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies and IPC 1711/1721 Rework and Repair of Electronic Assemblies Certified Specialist. I don't have alot of experience with working with CRTs/TVs but I do have electronic experience. I have aquired ITC 222 Service Manual and the Field Repair Guide.
Check the high voltage transformer connections first. You can't miss it, on the left hand circuit board.
Do your self the favor and toss the set,I had one not to long back and never did figure out what was wrong with it,that chassis is nothing but trouble there are to many problems with it.I did save a couple of boards out of it the one with the flyback and I think the main pwr board so I could look it over and try to find out what was wrong with it without having the entire set in the way if you need any parts off of it let me know, the HOT was still good on mine or so my tester said not shure about the flyback but it looked to be in good condition no cracks or bad solder joints.
@oldtech2: I took a good look at it this weekend. It appeared some of the solder joints on the flyback were cracked and had separated from the pad. After reflowing the solder the TV came on fine, though I can't guarantee it would not have relapsed into the same condition the next day.
Unfortunately, in my excitement as I was putting the chasis cover back on I caught/bumped the circuit card on the back of the projection tube... sudden hiss of escaping gas... I broke the projection tube. The TV is now sitting out by the garage. I'll probably take it to the dump sometime this week.
My first foray into TV repair did not end as I had hoped.
Thanks for the quick replys. Maybe someday I'll come across another free TV that needs repaired and give it a shot again.
Thats probably the best possible thing that could have happened to you,you just dont know it yet.Congrats on the fix.Bad solder joints on the flyback is one of many many many possible problems that chassis had as I indicated in my earlier post.As for the cracked crt I think the factory made them especially thin your not the only one who has cracked them, ive heard of people cracking them taking the drive board off,if I still had the set sitting around i'd offer you a replacement crt.
I also have one of those RCA itc222. It flashes 5times then 9times and repeats want turn on not really sure what to do about it should I take out the circuit boards and look for loose solder or is there quiker way to it to cut on
I had to look that exact code up for somebody the other day, here it is again I dont have a clue to what it means. 59 Wrong GenCAM Version Used GenCAM cut 2.1 Must Be Used. If you were to start anywhere start here http://www.techlore.com/downloads/file/27245/ITC222.pdf on page 75.One of the first things you should check for is swollen/bubbled caps I dont remember exactly which ones but its on the board on the left when you take the back off around the center of the board.
