After poking around all day to find info on my convergence problem, I decided to order a repair kit from tvrepairkits.com. Meanwhile I figured I'd start pulling the board out. After removing it, I noticed that two resistors (3159 & 3160) had burn marks on one end where they met the board. Would I just be able to replace those two resistors or do I still have to replace the convergence chips as well?
Very nice! you should post more great pictures!! And to answer your question, NO you will need to replace BOTH of the IC'S that come with the kit as the resistors do not burn up for no good reason, the reason? The chips are shorted internally.

I figured that was the case, especially after seeing they were on the same circuit. That's pretty much the best picture of the bunch, and it took several attempts to get.
Thanks for the quick response.
After getting my kit from tvrepairkits.com, I saw that all 12 were supposed to be 6.8 ohm (blue gray gold gold) resistors but the two burnt ones are 93 ohms (white orange black gold). I then checked the photo on their website (below, theirs not mine).
I even confirmed in the service manual, also linked to from the site, that they are all supposed to match. I went ahead and replaced all 12 along with the two chips. Time for bed, will finish assembly later.
After getting everything together, convergence was going well until the TV screen started to flicker and then the TV shut off! This happened after only a few minutes. A quick search indicated solder bridges could be the problem.
I removed the board again and found only the smallest of loose solder bits that were easily removed with a q-tip. That took care of this new issue! I'm back up and running for only $70.
Thanks to those who have posted information on this board. It proved extremely helpful.
Great news man Glad to hear you fixed your tv yourself very satisfying feeling is it not????? you also saved yourself a few hundred bucks!!!!!
Well, not so fast there pardner. Looks like things work fine up until 45 minutes in when things go wonky again. Convergence jumps around, flickering. Change the output format of my TiVo and it's fine for a little while then goes to crap again. My eyes are killin' me cuz i just wanted to finish watching one single show. I'm about ready to throw in the towel. I feel like I got a bad set of chips or sum'n. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
any last minute suggestions before i cave and pay +$2k to replace?
I doubt if the chips are bad, where did you get the chips to replace those in the set?? don't give up just yet!!!!! still plenty of chances to fix the set, so

I got them from tvrepairkits.com for $70. I turned on the TV this morning and the issue persisted. Oddly enough, when I changed the output of my TiVo from 1080i fixed to 480p, it cleared up. This didn't work last night.
I then went back to the manual convergence (single) and the adjustoment took while using 1080i. Time will tell if it holds.
The multipoint screen was jittering before I made the single adjustment but now seems fine. Hopefully I'm not chasing symptoms.
It's been almost a year now and the TV is still up and running like a champ. I'm glad I took the time to do this myself.
