KP-51WS510 Focus issue

Hello all,

first I'd like to thank the comunity here for fixing my Pioneer 53" and giving me the confidence to start buying these things up cheap and fixing them!!! I haven't sold any yet, but it's nice to have a bigscreen HDTV in every room!!!! The problem i have now is this:

I got a Sony 51" KP-51WS510. I replaced the convergence ICs a year ago and it's still beautiful!!! The focus is starting to go, first it was irritating but went away after 5 minutes. Now it is constantly fading in and out of focus, shows are acceptable, but sometimes it's sooo blurry I can't read text on commercials, or a ticker bar scrolling on the bottom screen.

Is there somewhere I can start?  So you know, I am a Field Service Engineer and I repair Cancer treatment machines, I've met your 35KV working on camera tubes in the 90's (great times). I work on a 6MV linear accelerator so I know DANGER!!! I know the ins and outs of electronics, but never really dug into TVs until you showed me how easy it is for certain problems, I am hoping Focus is one of those easy ones! If it's worth diggin in, send the manual to [email protected] (thanks!!)

The convergence chips were a breeze, but because this TV is dying? I am going to look at my dream Mitsubishi WS-65807 tonight. It's $150 and has a convergence Problem, should be a nice addition to my collection... and the chips are STK392-570, $20each at MCM, see I do my homework!!!

Thanks guys!!

Ok, I noticed that when there

Ok, I noticed that when there are still images the picture flickers. hope this helps anyone that knows. I'll probably pull the front and see if I can see a CRT flickering.

Ok, sorry to bump, I know you

Ok, sorry to bump, I know you guys get busy sometimes.

I am just wondering if this focus issue is something I can fix.
I don't think it's a tube problem because I get perfect picture most of the time.

Thanks,

from what i know it still

from what i know it still sounds like the IC's. Did you replace them with the sanyo IC's? Everything i'm reading says that the fac/ replacement ones are known to go again as soon as a year. Sonys are great arent they?! I need to ask the question of how to discharge the red coil on the 'd' board so I can remove it. I am replacing my IC's tomorrow so I have to get the d board out today. Any tips would be great! thnx in advance. Also wanted to point out that you can download the service manual at this site. Go to the homepage, click on the techs corner, scroll down on the manual list and you will find it.

Thanks, I haven't seen color

Thanks, I haven't seen color shifts in my Sony so I am not sure if this is convergence, it's focus drifting in and out, can someone else confirm or deny that this could be convergence ICs? I mean I really don't want to throw $40 at it if it doesn't fix it.
Also I could not find the Manual on tech corner for the WS-65807.
The Convergence ICs for my mitsu will be here Tuesday.

Thanks all!

Awesome!!!!

Awesome!!!!
I fixed my 65 in Mitsu, the convergence chips came yesterday!!!
It's beautiful!

I pulled the Sony out of the living room until I can troubleshoot it.
I also wanted to mention that when I set the video mode on the Sony from Vivid or Pro to standard, I get less flicker and focus issues.

If anyone can help me nail this problem I'd sure appreciate it!

Thanks for all the help

Does the flicker happen right

Does the flicker happen right away? Or does it happen after the set warms up? Im by no means a pro but am just trying to give you ideas. If it happens after the set warms up/ or maybe now after a year it happens right away then maybe you didnt use enough of the heat resistant compound between the IC's and the heat fins. I have read that this will quickly burn them out. Just a though. Also, if this is the case did you use enough on your mitsu 65?

I may just throw the chips in

I may just throw the chips in, if that doesn't fix it, I'll sell it with focus issues. About 5 months ago it would take about 5-10 minutes to focus itself, then it would be fine, it has been getting worse in the last 5 months. It still focuses fine, but it will drift in and out of focus. Also it is worse when the image gets brighter.

Thanks,
