When I press 'record' whilst viewing Guide Plus, the HDD starts and ends at a certain time but not when the programme actually starts and finishes. Eg tonight it started 30 secs b4 prog and ended 30secs b4, so I missed the last bit. Why is this and can it be changed? Do they all do this (I'm thinking of buying a Panasonic instead).

TV stations rarely comply to their schedules down to the second. In most cases, it's normal for a show to begin and stop 30 seconds before to 30 seconds after the scheduled start and stop times. Many DVRs give you the ability to adjust the start and stop times for your show, so with a bit of manual intervention, you can set it to start a minute early and stop a minute after.
If you find this 30 second difference to be common among all recordings, you can adjust the clock on your DVR or TV (whichever has the guide you're using) up a minute, which should better line you up for recordings.
