OLDER MODEL RCA HOME THEATER PICTURE AND PICTURE

I have a problem with my OLDER MODEL RCA HOME THEATER PICTURE AND PICTURE TV WITH GUIDE PLUS When I turn the unit on, it scrolls between the Guide Plus and the menu more of the menu than the guide and won't allow me to change channels or control the volume. Some days it won't allow me to turn it on at all with or with out the remote. The only way to turn the TV back on is to hit the Volume down button on the TV it self. But when we have to turn it on that way a sequence of red numbers appear on the bottom of the screen that are highlighted in blue. When that appears you can't even control the TV unless you hit the CH up button. In order to turn it off you have to hit the CH down button on the TV when the menu is not flashing on the TV or just unplug it. On top of every thing else the TV will mute it self for hours while the menu is jumping from on option to the next.
