I recently received replaced the convergence IC's on a Magnavox 51MP392H/17 that I got for free. After fixing that problem however, I now realize that I have the fungus issue with the blue CRT in the set. I have the service manual, have ordered the CRT coolant and am now in the research stage. During that research, I have read that there may be an issue with the high voltage removing the CRT regarding the removal of the leads to the flyback transformer. Is there any merit to this? After the set is powered down, would there still be an issue with the removal of those leads? Also, I have also read that there is sometimes an issue with those leads not wanting to disconnect, could anyone shed a little light on this subject, I would appreciate the feedback. Thanks, -Drew
The anode leads merely push into the flybacks on those sets but they have a plastic sleeve that fits over the anode wire and which also fits into the top of the flyback to hold the wire in place. You'll see the sleeve on the wire when you pull the rubber boot off the top of the wire you're wanting to remove. You'll need to remove the sleeve in order to remove the wire.
Thnak you for your reply. I had already removed the lead from the splitter and thought I had pulled a soldered lead off of a connector or something. It took a second to realize that those leads just sat in the bottom of the thing like that. BTW, cleaned blue gun and replaced fluid, and picture looks GREAT!!!! The fluid I took out was dark brown, and c-element lens as well as face of CRT was caked with nasty yellow gunk (fungus). Cleaned everything with denatured alcohol and the thing looks terrific. Couldnt ask for it to look any better.
