Older Sony 27" screen blinks

I have an older (about 10-12 yrs old) Sony 27" Trinitron.  In the past two weeks, when the set is turned on, the screen remains black, then blinks intermittently for the next couple of minutes, with the periods of picture getting longer and the period of black getting shorter, until eventually the screen just stays on.  My brother, who has a tech background says he thinks its a capacitor, it probably will get worse then go, and its not worth the effort to try to repair.  This set has served me well and owes me nothing, but I like it and would be willing to watch the 27" screen another couple years if the cost of keeping the thing working that long isn't self defeating.  Any advice or info that would help me make a decision would be appreciated....thanks in advance...sg

start up circuit which

start up circuit which controls a relay may be the location of the problem.some of these also monitor the hi-voltage to the crt, this may be the source of some part slowly failing.

Classic symptom of the CRT

Classic symptom of the CRT itself starting to fail. Start looking for another set. You can turn up the screen control on the flyback to "fix" the problem. But this will only work for a short while. Dan
