I have a dead KDP-51WS550. When I turn it on, I get no picture and 5 blinking lights as the error code. I was able to find an online description of this error, "white balance failure", and I was able to find a copy of the service manual.
Can anyone help me decide if I should try to open this thing up and do the repair myself? Unfortunately, I live too far away from a Sony repairman/service center. I don't have many options. If it is a matter of ordering and replacing a board, I think I can handle it. But as I browse the service manual, I don't really understand what I am reading.
Thanks!
Greg
What a white balance error is , The tv checks the current coming back from each tube. if they are not balanced it will cause this error. The problem with this is that usually when i see this problem one of the crt's are bad. You can try to adjust the screen voltage (g2) to be the same voltage across all three tubes i think it is around 260-280 volts, i can't remember for sure what the factory is on it. but anyway whatever voltage one tube is on adjust the other two tubes for the exact same voltage on a blank screen the error may go away. if not you need to check some other voltages that i don't have right now.Give that a try first and see if it will work.

How do you adjust the voltages and where are the adjusters???
