Toshiba 36A50 Picture

I have had this unit since 12/00.  Bought new.  Today when I tuned it on there was a horizontal solid black band from side to side.  It was approx. 6-7 inches high starting at the bottom of the screen.  The picture was somewhat compressed due to this.  After about 5 mins., the black band shrunk to approx 2" but still there.  There is also a faint horizontal line about midway up that remains staionary.  The sides and top are normal.  Prior to today there was this faint horizontal line that would sometimes rise from the bottom of the screen about a third of the way up and then dissappear.  This was sporatic so I dismissed as an isolated interference. Can you please tell me what might be causing this and what I might expect as far as repair costs(bark park)?

Thanks in advance

i don't work on that brand,

i don't work on that brand, but it sounds like a vertical output ic or a capacitor in the vertical circuit is more likely. Repair would be one i would call typical, and should not be outrageous.

Thank you.  Would further damage occur by watching it in this condition before I can get a qualified person to look at it?

Thanks
