Goldstar GVR-DD1 Problem

I borrowed a Goldstar DVR-DD1 8mm/VCR combo that had been on the shelf for a long time.  I powered up, inserted a tape and the display shows "ALARM".  The tape will eject but will not play, fast forward or reverse.  Can anyone diagnose the problem and tell me how to correct the problem?  I do not have a manuel.

Thanks

John

The alarm message usually

The alarm message usually indicates that the tape did not load properly.  Rather than attempt to play it and cause damage to the tape, the unit will stop.  One of the most common problems is that the tape heads don't spin.  Without the cushion of air between theheads and the tape, the tape will be ruined.  This is one repair that shoud be done by a tech.  The tolerances of the tape and head positions are critical.  Get a service tech to give you an estimate.  With that information, perhaps we can talk you through the actual repair.
