Hi all, my sony kp-51ws500 projection tv worked prfectly until just the other day when I turned it on and the picture was bowed towards the center and there are two sets of letters for everything. Also, you can see different colors red, green, ect. I have been reading some of the posts from some others in here and it sounds like I have convergence problems. I have access to technicians who wil help me but I need the service manual formy tv. Would anyone mind sending that to me so I can see the schematics on the ic's. I want to thank you in advance for your help!
Terry
the convergence ic's have failed. this is a common problem with many brands they all use the stk392 series convergence ic's - one of two things is happening either those ic's have gone bad, or you have bad solder connections on the ic's them self or nearby.
This can be an involved repair. you need to be comfortable with soldering in order to complete this repair. and know where the high voltages are located inside the tv. even when un-plugged voltages as high as 35000 volts are in the unit.
These types of repairs may also involve knowing how to read and use a multimeter and follow circuit flow using a schematic diagram. A lot of times when these convergence IC's go out, they will also blow out the pico fuses on the G board and or the feedback resistors and circuit protectors in the convergence circuit. I would have to say at least more then half of the convergence IC's I have replaced in the past as needed further diagnosis. If you do not have any soldering experience with printed circuit boards, play it safe and call in a pro to assist you in this repair, as the other person said, there is a lot of high voltage inside these puppies even when they are unplugged. Good Luck
