The LCD screen works by changing the angle of the crystals to either let light out or not (realize that I am over simplifying this...) If there is a bad connection somewhere, then the entire screen system may be being told to let the light through. This is a digital system and if the correct bit is messed up, drastic symptoms can occur. The bottom line is that the problem may be simple but difficult to locate because of the size of the connections involved. Inquire at a local Sony authorized service center about examination costs.
