I just had the convergence IC's replaced on my 2002 Toshiba 50H82 rear projection TV. I personally removed the board and took it to the repair shop. As instructed by the repair technician, I marked every connector and wire and after getting the board back in the TV, I hooked up every connection to it's original place. Then I turned on the TV and there was a humming sound like a tube warming up that grew stronger and louder in pitch for about 5 seconds which ended with a soft POOF sound. I don't know what to think, since I don't know enough about actual circuits on a board, I can't accuse the repair man of doing something wrong, he could as easily blame me. When I trun the power on now, the speakers work but the lamps do not even come on. Does it sound like they actually blew or perhaps the board was not properly fixed? I love TV and it's been 4 weeks without any and I am close to turning the entire set into a fixture in my front yard. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
You will need to go back inside and make sure you plugged all of the plugs in correctly, and all the way. When you heard the humming noise, you should have turned off the set right away, as A TV Set does not sound like that when it is turned off. It really sounds like a plug was not connected correctly, or there was a short on the convergence board somewhere and blew out a capacitor. You now have another problem with this TV set. If you have no solid state repair experience, you will need to call in a pro to help you sort out the problem. Good Luck., and let us know how you make out with this repair.
Thank you Larry. I re-checked everything and found a possible problem. There is a large metal box the size of a harddrive connected to the board, on top of this there a places for 2 connections for a slim female connector. 1 is connected but the other has no connection( it has 5 pins ). There is a similar connection on the board nearby that also has 5 pins. My problemis I can't find any wire connectors to anything that I left out. I can't even remember if I intentionally left these 2 connections in place when I took the board for repair. Of course I still may find a blown or burnt circuit, but before I take the board back to the shop I would like to find a 5 wire double ended female connection to hook up these 2 areas to each other to see if that has any effect. The next problem is I don't know what these thin wire, thin plug connection cables are called. There are several of different pin number sizes yet they all are the same width and same type of female connections. If I can find a place to buy or oder these ( knowing what they are ) it would help further my attempt to fix this myself. Again thank you.
Without a service manual, I'm afraid i do not have a clue what is going on, or how I can advise you. Sorry.
Hello.
New to this site, but lots of electronic exp. Working on a Toshiba 50H81.has convergence issue.replaced stks.Picture still distorted(actually no tuner signal) and no sound.Micro seems to work as can barley make out menu. Pulled "hyper module" and esr'd caps. Replaced 7 caps, mostly 2.2@16. some of the 10@16v seemed a little weak (should have replaced) replaced with electrolitics.
Found cool and quick way to remove surface mount caps. Cut them with side cutter pliers (close to bottom of cap. then you can see the cap leads. gently pry off the remainder of the cap, then all you have left is a plastic base, which is easily removed.then heat the old cap leads and remove them. you are now left with the pad, which I beef up with solder.
I hope I just missed some dry caps on the hyper module. will check tuner voltages, I may have a supply problem.
Great site!
